Took my 02 America for first ride of the season. It was running good and cruising nicely then all of a sudden the right cylinder started cutting out and backfiring out the carb. It seamed to go good for a while then did it again. It goes away then comes back. I was able to make it home but am wondering where to start checking. I think I'll switch coil wires and see if problem goes to left side. Any thoughts on what else may be going on? Thanks Steve

I think it sounds like your CDI is on the way out.

TTP Firestarter and Blue Flame Coils ROCK.

Good excuse to upgrade them.

Just make sure the vent hose is not pinched or plugged and that the hidden fuel filter are not causing the issue.

I concur, the right side cutting out and then okay, then repeating. CDI going bad, if it is that it will get progressively worse.

having gone down this road with 2 OEM units and a Pro Com, the TTP firestarter is definitely the way to go.

So I switched the coils and the bike ran fine for the short ride I took in between rain showers. I'm gonna go for a longer ride maybe tomorrow, weather permitting,to really get the engine up to temp and the electronics to warm up and see if the opposite side starts acting up. So does the CDI act up always or act up after it gets hot from the engine?

the ones I have seen show no pattern, they act up randomly until they quit all together and don't come back. I have never seen one lose both sides though, usually one or the other. If it does not switch sides it's the CDI.

Another possibility- if it is a bad pick up coil (a/k/a ignition sensor) the failure generally shows up after several minutes of running. When it cools down it then may run normally again until it is back to full operating temp.

Generally I've seen two types Of CDI failure.
1. As above.
2. Bike is fine. Then never fires up again.

I took the bike for a longer ride today and it started acting up after about 15 minutes. Still the right side cutting in and out. So switching coils did nothing. I guess I'm gonna order a Firestarter CDI. Would I benefit from Blue Flame coils also? My bike has the Freak installed with jetting and Epco pipes. BO2S4, I'm keeping your comment in mind also, as your comment fits the situation. Thanks

When my cdi went bad at 40,00 miles one cylinder would intermittingly stop firing, then kick back in then cut out again. There did not seem to be any pattern to it. Replaced it and never had an issue again. A bad coil would follow would over to the other cylinder when you swapped it over. A bad ignition pick up sensor generally manifests by the bike cutting out all together after it gets up to operating temperature then starting back up after it cools down, then cutting out again once it has warmed back up.
