2005 America, 74,000 miles, struggles to idle after engine gets to temp. Misses, then will quit if throttle not manipulated. (Had to re-start twice at red lights/stop signs). Otherwise, cruises and accelerates fine. Increased idle speed, no help. Going downhill, about 30 mph with clutch in and throttle at idle, extremely loud backfire from one of the cylinders (as loud as a shotgun). Squirrel condoms good, no apparent intake leaks, all other conditions normal. Pro-Com ignition installed at 55,000 miles. Any help would be appreciated...

Although it seems you've checked, those are precisely the conditions I experienced with a vacuum leak (the condoms). I didn't think mine were bad but changed out of desperation to solve the problem. I didn't see the crack until I was changing them. This may not be your problem but it is the cheapest stab you'll take. Hope you get it solved.

If the condoms don't work, do a compression test.

... or pour some Seafoam in,you might have a blocked idle circuit.

I agree with Steve. If it accelerates and cruises fine, you have either an intake leak (did you check the intake rubbers especially under the clamps), plugged idle circuit (have you tried pulling the choke to see if it helps go away). The only thing that confuses me is the fact that it does it more when hot. Is that because you leave your choke on during warm up???

Yes, choke is pulled out 3/4 of the way until it warms, then I push it in...

If it runs better with the choke pulled out, that's telling you that you are lean. The choke is actually an enrichener that feeds extra fuel when pulled. If pulling it helps the unit run better, then it is probably one of the two items mentioned.

Carbs off, disassembled bowls and removed floats, needles, and jets, blew everything out with shop air and carb cleaner. Re-installed carbs, bike runs like new after 25 mile ride through West Georgia, no backfiring, idles like a kitten! Whole process took under 2 hours....Ready for Hiawassee!

That's good to hear Mark. Probably some dirt in the system.

My bike did it at about135,000 miles. Thought I had bad gas disconnected throttle position sensor, took care of problem.

I was so much older then, I am younger than that now (Wrote By Dylan Sung by the BYRDS,)
