Took the dogs out this morning before work and was distracted by the phone. My boss called me in early, just as I hung up I heard car horns. My dog Peanut was hit by a car. I was freaking out all day at work. Wendy called me a couple hrs after I left and said she was OK but moving slowly. When I got home she didn't come down the stairs to meet me and that scared the he11 out of me since she always does with her whole body wagging. I went up stairs afraid of what I might find. She was laying there looking at me tail wagging, I guess she must be sore but she seems fine. I went over her before I left for work and she didn't complain about anything I touched, she has a couple small scrapes on her back leg and foot but that seems to be the extent of her visible injuries other than being stiff and sore. No blood in her pee or poop so I think in a day or 2 she will be herself again.

Wow. Glad it worked out Ian, it is never easy to lose them, but much harder to lose them suddenly like that.

Holy crap Ian, as soon as I read your dog was hit by a car, I cringed. Phew, glad to hear she's gonna be okay, you don't need anymore heartbreak with your dogs.

Oh noooo! I don't even wanna think about losing my dog. And injuries - it's sometimes so hard to tell if they're hurting - they have such a high tolerance for pain. I hope she recovers completely.

Cheers, Richard

That is why I was so scared at work all day, I went over Peanut and she didn't yelp at anything but they are so stoic I wasn't sure if she was OK or not. I think she is going to be fine now though.

Oh, Ian, I am so sorry and you've got my prayers. I'm working on a contraption to allow my pup ride with me. After my wife and my kids, he is my best friend.

I'm so sorry you and Peanut have had such a horrible day. She'll probably be really sore tomorrow. Make sure she eats and drinks and is able to do her business. A baby aspirin can also help with the aches I'm sure she has. Our dogs are so precious to us, we totally understand your stress.

Hope your weekend progresses uneventfully for you and Peanut.

Thank you all for the well wishes. She has been eating and drinking normally and doing her business. She seems a little stiff and sore but otherwise OK as of this morning so I am pretty sure at this point that she is going to be fine. Had me very worried though, my dogs are like my children to me.

Aspirin is really bad for dogs, they lack the proper enzymes to break it down!

Dang man, glad to her she will probably pull through it.
I recall you lost a pet sometime back so I'm sure this was very hard on you.

Glad Peanut is OK, I can only imagine how you felt hearing that news.
Think about a buried wire boundry fence. We've had one for over 16 years. I bought a "Radio Fence" kit and installed it myself. The same unit has been in two different houses. I break the wire occasionally, but it's pretty bulletproof other than my foolishness.
We had two dogs, one passed away in August, so we're down to one. She knows she can only exit the yard when her collar is off and only across the drieway when we take a walk. She really doesn't need to even wear the collar very often, just as a reminder.
If you decide to go this route, give me a shout and I can give you plenty of installation tips. To us, the peace of mind is priceless.

Regarding the aspirin, and this applies to people as well, it is a very effective anti coagulant. That's why it's advised for chest pain, to break up any clots in your coronary arteries. In trauma it can lead to excessive bleeding, bruising or swelling.

Ian doesnt need an underground fence.....his dogs NEVER EVER go in the street, He said so himself very clearly...luckily it wasnt some one on a bike,(or maybe it was) that could have been killed by such an incidence, PEOPLE NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR ANIMALS.

REALLY Glad to hear your dog will be OK! We lost 2 last fall within a few weeks of each other due to age/health and know how hard it is. Even seeing one in the pain that you know they are in hurts you deep.

Sometimes it's totally unexpected. When she was a puppy, our Lab/Spaniel got out after our blind neighbor left our gate open. Brandy had never been off leash before, outside of our fenced backyard, and playfully ran right into the street. We were lucky, her collar cought on something hanging on the car that hit her and that kept her from being crushed. Apart from a punctured lung, a few lost teeth and a $1500 vet bill, all is good.

Despite the potential side effects, aspirin are potent anti-inflammatory and anti-pain medication that can be used safely and effectively under a vet's supervision, most often for short term pain management only.

It's Tylenol that dogs can't have. As long as the dog is healthy there is nothing wrong with a baby aspirin to help with the aches and pains Peanut may be experiencing for a few days.

I'm late here but it seems that you'll have a very sore but very alive pup and that's a good thing. I've lost more than one to cars (which is why my place is fenced now) and it's never ever easy.

My puter has been down and now when I check BA.com first thing I see is Peanut hit by car! My heart dropped Ian and glad to hear Peanut is alive albeit a bit sore. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

My Vet sold me some dog aspirin. Liver flavored. It made it much easier for my old Chow to make it up and down the stairs on cold days during his last few years. No caffeine like in the human variety

Plus straight aspirin is bad for dogs stomachs just like people. For years my vet told me to use Ascriptin since it was buffered and made it easy on the stomach. Now she just prescribes Rimadyl 75mg at $35 a bottle for my dog with Arthritis. I would check with your vet by phone that way they can't charge you for an office visit. I am glad your dog seems okay though.

First time in her life (about 8 years) she ever went by the road Dave, something drew her out there and the fault was mine. The phone rang and I went to answer it instead of watching her like I always do. Instead of being a total a$$ after Peanut got hurt why not just shut up if you don't have anything nice to say.

On a better note she is much much better today, almost back to her old self already. Thank you to all the rest of you for the well wishes it means a lot to me when I am so worried. Thank you for the helpful suggestions, my mom also advised aspirin. I thought of both sides, anti-inflimitory and pain relief vs. anti-coagulant and opted not to give it to her. I never heard about a dog not being able to break it down,I have had vets suggest it in the past. I'll have to ask my current vet about it.

"1st time in 8 years" you've got an excuse every time Ian, You got one shot to death a couple of months ago and now you got one run over...Think you need to change something? I cant believe im the only one to call you out on it here, after all the ****** you gave me before any of this happened. Do you remember the thread about dogs being loose and running out in front of cars and bikes....look it up "My dogs never, ever would leave the property, i dont need to contain them"
Your a Jackwagon coming on here looking for sympathy.
Know what, do everyone(especially dogs)a favor.. get a hamster or something would you

Regardless of your point of view you should keep it to yourself in a situation such as this. You probably lack the common decency, probably your upbringing. I remember the thread and you spoke your mind there as did I. I came on here to vent and look for a little support in a bad situation what ever the cause as many others have done the decent people either offered their support or didn't say anything as they are smart enough to know there is a time and place and this is neither. I have had dogs my whole life and this is the only time any of them got out in the road or away from me, the one who was shot (thanks for bringing that back to my mind fresh again, horses a$$) I had just taken off her chain and had a hold of her collar on the way back to the house when she jerked loose. I am now putting you on ignore.

Sorry to hear about Peanut, Give her a massage or two a day until she's back to her self. A refresher course might in order on where her boundaries are.

Ian you dont deserve to have Dogs.
Your supposed to be smart enough to be able to take care of them.....I dont have any sympathy for the Douche bag, I have sympathy for the dog... Im tired of you coming here crying and whining about your dogs, when your the one not taking care of them... you should be embarrassed, im not sure why your not. Maybe your upbringing.........You need to get a Goldfish, Hamster, even better....... Pet Rock.....
BTW...Having dogs your whole life doesn't make you good at it, just means you've probably been doing stupid shiet your whole life....
