I've been looking at a lil custom build motorcycle business in Indiana, @janusmotorcycles.com.Pretty cool, retro machines, styled after 1930s machines like the Superior Broughham and old Nortons. I'm kinda considering one. Only 250 CC, but they sure are pretty looking. Of course, the biggest concern for any buyer is that the engine is made in China. (A Honda replica)I talked via e-mail with one of the two owners and they swear it is a reliable motor, with one model they know of going 12 to 15 K. There's quite a few videos on their site. It would be a great grocery getter and around the small town area.7 grand IS a lot of money for a limited machine, but I think it could definately fit a niche, especially MY NICHE! I guess it would fit in the same rough catagory as a Royal Enfield, but I've read enough about THEIR reliability to scare me off. Besides, this machine is just as cool! I'm thinkin the beautiful dark green with gold pinstripe!

they are cool looking little bikes, my buddy's shop had a demo of them last fall. kind of expensive for what you get, but definitely fun for around town

I was in Florida in 2006ish. A guy there had a mass produced mini-chopper with a 100 or 200cc I think in it. They were about 3 grand then. It didn't keep up with traffic well, road horribly, and when he needed parts he gave up and bought a whole motor for 350 bucks.
I think these things are really cute! But a lot of money for the cute.

$7,000??? For a 250? For $900 more you could have a modern classic that is a "real" motorcycle. https://www.bmwmcofokc.com/default.asp?p...r=xNewInventory

Yeah, I get that. But I'm not talking about a bike that is more "practical". I've already got a giant Indian and a midsize Triumph for that! I'm talking about something fun in in small bike. For me, this bike is nostalgia "driven". It'd be a lot like a riding experience from the 1930s, but with modern mechanics to make it more reliable. I always slobbered over old Harley's, Triumphs and Broughham Superiors, but never really wanted to work on them and look for parts. This IS a small bike, but with beautiful antiquey lines, perfect for me to bang around town in and do the occasional hop to one of many small towns within a 50 mile radias of me. AND, it is gonna be a bike I CAN work on if I want to. I'm really already tired of all the electronic gizmos that make modern bikes go. It is a three hour job to change the rear tire on my big Indian and the stuff that makes the engine go are waaaaay out of my league. Bottom line is...it's all about the nostalgia in the looks and ride of this machine.

If you want a real piece of nostalgia look no further https://www.cycleworld.com/honda-unveils-2019-monkey
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Cool lil bike, but the wrong KIND of nostalgia. When I was a kid, the younger neighbor boys had a new pair of the Honda 50s. My uncle and I were soooooo jealous!

It's your money Rich. I personally don't want a bike that can't keep up w traffic, nostalgia or not
Maybe this guy will sell his bike to you w the 7K as a down payment.

I kind of like this Matchless. Only $9600 USD

I guess my point is w/o being disrespectful to you, why not get a real classic for your $7000 instead of a replica w the engine made in China?

Watched your videos Paul. Love that old stuff, of course. But that's part of the point, they're OLD! I don't want to wrench and find/fabricate parts for an antique no more. These Janus motorcycles wed the old styling and riding experience with modern mechanics. As to the Chineese motor, I paused at that also. But after some research, I found that these motors are really quite good, running a close second to the Honda motors that they are copied from. Pretty much bullet proof. I bought my daughter a 250 Honda two years ago, and I gotta say, it will go 60 mph down the highway all day long. And that's all the faster I ride anyway! (Unless I'm riding with Dave, then ya gotta add 20 or so!) It IS a lot of money for a small displacement bike. But if you read their stuff and the reviews, you learn that this bike is very high quality. My much loved America turned a lot of heads and my current Indian turns even more. I'll bet that this Janus will be a crazy crowd pleaser. (Not that I'm a big fan of that. I ride what I like.) And as far as "my money", I'm currently in negotiations with my woman to try and solve THAT problem. It turns out that a good kidney is currently going for as much as 30 K in some countries down south! and she has TWO good kidneys, cause she's always taken care of herself! She's dragging her feet on that idea, however, She points out that I ALSO have two kidneys, but like I'm explaining to her (I'm patient that way!), that is comparing "apples to oranges"!

I just saw a Coleman minibike at Sams Club for $550.00 Not quite the same thing but certainly a lot cheaper,

Nothing quite as much fun as a mini-bike. A lot of us here probably started our love affair with motorcycles with such. But I'll bet it has a Chinese motor, and not one of the GOOD ones.

Yeah, I look at them also. I don't have any grandkids running around, but I have some cousins the right age. But quite a few years ago I bought a brand new go cart with a chineese engine and it never for one day ran right. So now I'm leery. And my neighbors have had a few Chineese machines. The pattern is always the same. They run for a few days, and then they start to have problems with starting or running right. You take it to a shop and they refuse to even look at it. This has been a few years ago. Maybe they've gotten better? And again, the Janus I'm looking at has a reputation for being reliable. If I read their stuff right, it is actually an engine made in "Taiwan", not China proper, and maybe that makes a difference?

I have a pair of Chinese mini bikes I bought my grand kids a few years ago and they both run fine, they love them. My grand daughters has a flat now but other than that no issues. I do store them over the winter with Stabil Ethanol treatment in them.I wish we would stop that ethanol BS, it isn't helping anything enviornmental. It just harms engines, robs power, and decreases milage. ( by decreasing milage it wastes more fuel and actually causes more emissions, It alsoi has other bad emissions they don't tell you about.)

I don't know about Penn., but around HERE we have learned not to use alcohol added gases for ANY small engine. Especially chain saws. I've never had any problem with my regular cars or my antique machines, however.

It is funny that here in Iowa, the epicenter of the ethanol belt, we can easily avoid the stuff while people in other states often don't have a choice. I think all of our senior politicians, of both parties, support the ethanol boondoggle. As I recall the only one in the Iowa Caucuses that didn't was Ted Cruz who was attacked for it, and won the caucuses anyhow.

Some stations around here are offering more choices. A new station opened up a few blocks from my house and there is only one choice of E10. The rest are all non-ethanol. I hope that is a good sign that non-ethanol is coming back.

Market forces, gotta love em. Now we just need to keep the politicians from screwing it up.
