I was watching 'How the Universe Works' on the science channel and everything suddenly made sense.
Seems that stars are born when hydrogen gas collects in a lump. The lump has gravity that attracts more gas, generating more gravity, compressing th gas. Eventually, this progresses to the point that there is enough gravity that the gas compresses and generates heat enough to ignite. OK, that was when it became clear. Stars light off from COMPRESSION ignition. The universe is a giant diesel engine! That's why it has been able to run so long.

That is as far as any of mankind has gotten. Not a single living person knows the answer to that question...yet.

So then, it would seem that however you believe it came into existence one must exercise some level of faith.

Why do you have to believe you know how it came into existence? I don't really care and if I learned why I would still wake up in the morning, or not. I guess one delusional guess is as good as the other figuring they are both probably wrong.

Bolthorn was Bestla's mother a frost giant. Buri was formed by a cow and was the father of Borr. So the frost giant and Borr made Odin. Absolutely clear to any casual onlooker.

How can you not keep up with this? It all started with a cow and the sweat from the cow as it licked the ice to make the rivers made the giant gods.

I don't think we are sure where the cow came from but the rest is clearly factual.

In another thousand years or so, people will be talking about christianity and the myth of Jesus and his dad the same way.

I do find it amusing that I just bought (a month ago) a book on the Norse Gods. Pretty good read, and the guy basically took the old Norse legends and "rewrote" them to make sense to us modern readers. Dark stuff, a lot of it, with plenty of revenge tales. "Norse Mythology", by Neil Gaiman.

I see you have noticed the only difference. That being Mythology is a religion nobody believes in anymore.

Just a guess on my part, but I'd bet the village atheists were saying something similar a thousand years ago.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Being traveling in India and Thailand passed through Laos and now Vietnam they all seem to have their own versions of how it all began or how we are going to get where ever.

I have always said that I believe that you believe what you believe and I am ok with that just don't get bent out of shape because I believe it is hog wash.

They were, they were Buddhist, Gnostic, or Liars. Liars were important 1000 years ago. Thinking Crusades, inquisitions etc. Picking the faith of the local power was the best way to keep your head. Lying was the best way to survive.

Or you could reply just that you don't believe it- without calling it "hog wash" and not offend anybody in the process.

I believe in God. I do so by faith, since I can not prove He exists.
The athiest believes there is no god. He does so by faith, since he can not prove there is no god.

When you look at the universe, or just life itself, I say to the athiest "you have great faith".

I believe Jesus existed, as a person. I do not believe he was the son of any god, nor was he the product of a virgin birth. There have been many "gods" that share a lot of the same details of a Jesus story, dating before that one. Do you believe Jesus was a long haired white man as depicted in all western versions of the story?

Why, OF COURSE he did, Dave!

Uh-huh, he looked JUST like the blue eyed Jeffrey Hunter did in that 1961 flick "King of Kings"!!!

(...although in that '65 flick, "The Greatest Story Ever Told", most historians when tell you that no Roman soldier at the Crucifixion ever looked like John Wayne, AND probably never uttered those immortal words in that oh so unique cadence Big Duke always had, "He truly was the Son of God" as the sky filled with rain)

Oh now YOU Dennis would've gotten along GREAT with my dearly departed Pop!

(...he read that book back when it first hit the shelves in the late-'60s, and seemed to really take von Daniken's little theory to heart)

If God is actually God he can do anything he wants. If the universe can be spoken into existence he can certainly impregnate a teenage girl by wishing it. If God can create life in all it's complexity, and all the stars and planets in the universe, who are we to place restrictions on his power?

As for Jesus Christ, there are three possibilities. He was a start raving lunatic, a conniving con man or exactly who he said he was.

I personally will go with an all powerful God whose only limitations are the ones he places on himself and Jesus Christ as exactly who he said he was.

God I assume through logic, Christ through faith.

Alas, I think this discussion is in the wrong part of the site.
