Hello Everyone - Just found out That Bonneville Valves are indeed Nitrided. So if a shop grinds your valve stems where they come out at the valve guides. They are ruined cause the Nitrided Metal is ground off . This is what happened to me on new factory valves I bought to put in my Americas head. They won't own up to it though even though can see rough grind marks on stem while before and after ground area stem is polished super smooth. So now I gotta buy whole new set. The shop ordered the new valves from a Triumph dealer and it took 2 weeks to get to arrive so they could wreck them! Trying to just get my stuff back outta there!!

Why would they be ruined if the nitride coating is ground off ? Corrosion/strength or both ?

Isn't nitride only on the surface of the metal and a couple of a thou thick? I believe it s purpose is lubricity when hot (the hotter, the more slippery) and adds no strengthening qualities whatsoever. Not all of the aftermarket valves available for 790-865 engines have this applied and they seem to run just fine, along with a few other bazillion motors on this planet, past and present.

Your description is for Nickelcelling not Nitrided, all modern low end vales are Nitrided for strength -- High cost valves are super alloys and don't need it . Source metalergist with many degrees

Nitriding is a SURFACE hardening process that is used for wear reduction on moving parts, it DOESN'T add strength to the part. If they grounded the valve stems in the valve pocket area to cut down the diameter to increase air flow, it shouldn't hurt, as long they didn't cut down the diameter too much, how much is to much....?

I'm sure if you ask Carlos, he played with valves enough to tell you how much is to much. Where did they grind? at the valve tip end or in the valve pocket area? Pits? are they new valves?
