Hi Everyone - I set up right piston carb to lean and burned my piston - But I cought it in time, - uses no oil starts every time right up but have lost some compression. I'm gonna send whole top end out to get it all checked rebuilt. Wont know if I ruined cylinder till tear down. Replace both pistons, rings etc, . Anybody know off hand real quick if I gotta pull whole motor? If so I might just get another motor to stick in. Also, will a 06 speedmaster 865 cc work in my 06 America? Maybe 790 is better engine? So should I keep my 790? Any help would be great, Thanks everyone!

Go with a 904 kit. By the time you hone the cylinders,Yes you should hone or at least get a glaze breaker so the new rings can seat in the cylinders, your going to have the whole top end off any way.

Hi Again - I just lost my job so money is a issue - I can get a nice motor the whole thing for around 900.00 - if I go with 904 don't they have trouble finding gas - 11.5:1 compression? Then new clutch kit on and on.....then better manifolds on and on -- thinking pull top end off then stick new one on? Any suggestions? Any place to send to rebuild? I bet if my jugs are out of round I be boring them though- aw man what a mess!

Hi again everyone- I have a question to anyone who has a 904 up grade. When you had 904 done did you keep 790 crank? And I if you did is there more vibration? Thanks!

Stock bottom end, replacement clutch pack and springs, jetted up the carbs, pod filters, air injection delete....no noticeable added vibes. 92/93 octane gas works just fine.
Life may begin at 30, but it gets really interesting around 150!

I am checking out shops to do my engine work. Has anybody had work done at Mellium technologies in Plymouth Wi? I wonder if they know Bonneville engines?

You can probably buy a PinWall motor with low miles for what you will pay for a rebuild.

Hi everyone, I'm going to have cylinders bored and rebuild head. Does anybody know if the 865 engine has bigger valves then the 790 engine? Or are they the same size?

Remember that these are nikasil plated aluminum cylinders. If you bore them out, you will need to either press in new liners or replate. Also, you don't want to hone these cylinders if they are plated already. How do you know that the cylinder is toast? Lower compression doesn't mean bad rings. You could have burnt a valve. Have you added a bit of oil to the cylinder then rechecked the compression? If the comp comes up dramatically, the rings are bad. If the comp doesn't go up, you have a valve issue. You can pull the head and cylinders with the engine inboard. Check the search function. If your head is good, and you need cheap pistons, I'd consider picking up a used cylinder assembly and pistons off an 865 engine and use the 790 cams. Also, if you are gonna bore the cylinders and are tight on cash, THIS (CLICK) kit is relatively cheap. The old heads are interchangeable between engine sizes.

A guy named Randy from Randy's Blog who lives in Chicago just used this kit. He sent his whole engine to BP in Florida. His blog states BP put this kit in and then Nikasiled the sleeves. I couldn't figure that one out! Anyway I thought I'd pass that on.

Also, I have been hunting a good used 865cc assembly and head. You know low miles and serviceable. I think that's the best idea change pistons to 865 use 865 cylinders and 865 heads and then put in my 790 better cam!!! Now anybody that knows where I can find a good 865 upper portion PLease let me know!! Much Thanks--- by the way I'm new here and love this forum!!

865 EBay has a few different motors that will work for you. Make sure the upper front motor mount lug is still intact as a lot of motors break there from a collision. In other words, ask the seller questions.

And I have a brand new bare virgin head, you could move your parts over to.
