This is not for sympathy, it is to vent my feelings. I have a dog named Kizmitt, she got her name because of the way I ended up with her. She was in a room in a cage. I didn't really look at her when I was at the pound, I walked by. She broke out of her cage and got out of that closed room and came out in the main kennel and sat down right next to me facing the same way I was. I knew then I had to take her home. When I got her home she got very sick the next day. She had pneumonia and I nursed her back to health, only thing she would eat was macaroni and cheese. We developed a special and very strong bond. When I got home from work yesterday she couldn't use her one back leg. I couldn't find an injury so figured she pulled a muscle. This morning she can barely stand and collapsed twice. Took her to the vet and she has a low temperature and is very anemic and test positive for lime disease. I am treating the lime disease but the vet tells me the anemia probably isn't from the lime disease. I can't afford the $3,000 + for a transfusion so I brought her home to treat her for lime disease and hope for the best that I fear will not be. She will probably pass away. Her Xrays and blood work were OK except for what I mentioned, no tumors or bleeding. She does not seem to be in any pain and I bought her a cheese burger and macaroni and cheese on the way home. I am going to make her as comfy as I can and show her extra love. I am in tears, it is like losing a child to me. I know the proper spelling is kismet and that means fate or meant to be and thus her name after she adopted me. She will leave an enormous hole in my heart and my life.

I wish you the best of luck with her Ian. Our Keeshond had 3 transfusions before my wife decided to finally end her suffering. Each one brought a bit of relief, but it was only temporary.

Tough break, I know how much you care about your dogs.

BTW, $3K is outrageous. Our experience was a dozen years ago, but the transfusions were only about $300.

My sympathy. it really is a great loss to lose a good dog. At my age I've lost several and each one hurt. Unfortunately it's part of living with and loving dogs.

We adopt them knowing this day inevitably will come. I love my dogs like children and I will do it again and endure the loss again. It is worth the pain to have joyful fun times and the chance to give them a great life. Thank you guys for your kind words, it helps me to get it out.

I think dogs are really just people. They are actually better than some people. They adopt us. I have a rescue doggy that adopted me. When they leave us the do indeed tear a hole in your heart. Yupp.

Every time I have to put one of my dogs down I cry like a baby. And then sniffle for a couple of hours afterwards. We have a pet cemetary on our property which has a chapel where my wife and I, mom and dad, and my little brother will be interred. Once in a while, I go behind the chapel to where the "boys" are and talk to them. Anybody who doesn't believe that our pets will be in the afterlife with us is dumb. I plan on having some fun with them again!

They are irreplaceable and all special. You can never replace a dog only adopt another family member. As Larry said , and I agree, there is another dog out there that needs my love and I will not deprive them of what I can do for them to avoid the eventual painful parting. All I can do is love them as they love me and spoil them for the short time they walk this earth. My mom says God takes them early because they got it right and we still need to learn how to love.

I agree Rich, I have the ashes off all my dogs and I want that mixed with my ashes after I die and spread together so I will be with them always. I still miss every one of them. Kizmitt hasn't passed yet, as sick as she is she waits until I carry her outside to do her business.

Sorry Ian. I lost my girl a few weeks ago (she was 13 and couldn't stand up anymore without drugs and assistance) and I so know your pain and loss. I am reminded of her absence constantly throughout each day because she was so entwined in my life. Damn it!
I agree they are definitely worth this pain.

Thanks Ed, this is more difficult, not because of any difference in love but because Harley dropped over dead in her tracks. Kizmitt is still here with me and she is dieing and there is nothing I can do about it. I pray the vet is wrong but she is very weak and not eating much. Only time she moves much is when I pick her up and carry her outside. I left her out until she showed signs of wanting to go inside. I , of course, stayed with her and re-assured her and praised her for being a good girl until I brought her back in. She has always been most comfy on my bed so that is where she has been since being sick as comfy as I can make her. Not sure how I am going to be able to go to work tomorrow.

I really hope it is the lime disease, I am giving her meds and am on my way to the store in a few minutes to get her some liver to try and help with the anemia. You will see a man jumping up and down with joy if she recovers! I can not get my hopes up though, she really isn't eating much and that is a bad sign.

you might want to try some liquid foods as well Ian if she is not eating, like chicken broth (no salt) even some no surgar baby food are good and easier for a sick dog to eat.

Well just got back from the store and she refuses to eat chicken livers I cooked up for her. I got her to eat a few bites of a hamberger this morning but nothing else.
EDIT:
She just drank a small bowl of milk, better than nothing. Drank until it was gone, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 cup.

She actually sat herself up to eat beef jerky and drink a bowl of milk. Had her out in the sun and laying in the grass for a while until she indicated she wanted to come in the house. She is still very pale and her breathing is heavy and she sounds like she is snoring at times. I am still giving her meds for the lime disease even though I hold little hope of recovery. Tears my heart out seeing her like this.

Just keep giving her the meds, as much as she can drink of anything, (sick dogs won't eat) water or chicken stock is the best, keep her warm and hang in there, its all you can do.

I hate to get my hopes up but she seems stronger today. She actually got up on her own and walked outside while I was getting my other dogs out, that was down 2 steps then back in by herself. She was barely able to stand before. She is still pale and doesn't want to eat except some milk and water. Could be getting over the lime disease but still what ever else is going on is still there, I just don't know. I would love to see continued improvement but it still doesn't look good.

well its a step in the right direction. Heat is good for viral stuff, a heat lamp where she sleeps might be helpful, rice and hamburger meals are also very easy to digest and usually eaten.

She is much stronger today, jumping up on the couch and back off again and exploring the back yard for a while tail going and doing some of the stuff I remember like coming up between my legs to have her chest scratched. I used to pick her way up in the air to get her wound up that way too but not trying that yet. All that is good but today she has refused to eat all day so far, all she will do is drink water.

I hope she keeps improving. It sucks to lose a furry friend. I keep swearing that I will never get another pet, but I keep running into some critter who needs help. Latest one is an old granny yorki that needed to move from an abusive home that I took in last November.

Fantastic. Your doing the best for her. I sincerely hope she pulls thru. We have five right now, lost one back in march. So I know what you meant about her being like your kid. Thinking about you both.

Glad to know I am not the only one with 6 dogs. our 2 newest had parvo on the first full day at the house. thankfully the humane society paid all cost as we had to take them to the vet for sub dermal hydration every other day. now they are into everything and are 8 months old. I am sending out positive vibes for you and the dog.
