So my speedometer was acting all weird this am. Started out normal but around 75-80ish it jumped up to over 100 then pegged out. At a stop it satyed pegged but then at speed it dropped back to 70 then statred acting normal again at all speeds.

Mine did the same thing. Seems there's no cure other than total replacement. There's a minor possibility it's the cable but I doubt it.

I normally do that in the afternoon but in the wee hours of the morning the only ones out are myself and Johnny Law, and he's either sleepigng, screwing around with his phone or just waiting on me to come flying so he can filp on them ever so purddy electric blue lights.

That's weird, my speedo did the exact same thing Sunday on my journey back from the Arkansas Rally. The odometer and tripometer continued to work so that tells me the cable is "probably" not the culprit, but the speed indicator went bananas. I rode about 11hrs without that sucker working. I just set the RPM's on 5k in 5th gear and let her roll.
It seems someone did find a fix for these issues, "a gear or something" in the past but I'm probably dreaming that up.

@ Newt, who in their right mind does 45 on these puppies, I don't even think mine is capable of going that slow. LOL
@ Mike, yep weird alright, odo & trip working just fine.
After a cable a while back and loosing the reset knobby thing a few months ago and now this new development, I believe she's telling me she wants a new Acewell or a Dakota.

Odometer worked fine on mine too.
Love my Acewell. Speedo, tach, 2 trip meters, clock, etc all in one.

Mike, Cinnamon Girl's speedo whacked out when I was riding back from Arkansas several years ago. The common factor tween yours and mine? COLD WEATHER. no not 60 degrees F. Try 30ish. grrr

And yeah if you can't finger out how fast you are going, get off the bike and sober up. lol. How old are we? And we can't determine our speed yet? Just ribbing on ya.

I had exactly the same problem. Speedo went nuts, the Odometer was fine. These guys fixed it for me. I compared it to the GPS I've been using as a speedo. Every five mph from 25 to 80 mph it was within 1% the whole way. They reset the odometer and fixed the speedo for $85 not counting shipping. They said it was an cheap old Japanese designed speedo. but they fixed it better than new. http://www.foreignspeedoinc.com/
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

The bean can finally kicked the bucket. It had been working after warmming up a little but at some point on my ride into work yesterday the needle dropped back to 0 and havs been there ever since. Odo and trip keep right on rolling along. So what to do? Cheapest option would prolly be as Larry sugested, sent it out for repair. But I've never been a husge fan of it. So what are my other options, Acewell, Dakota, Koso? BTW anyone recall the ratio? Any yes I can tell my aproximate speed with out it! Well +/- 5mph. Haha.

Acewell works for me, Matt. It sits in the console and reports all kinds of things like speed, RPM, time, trip meter x 2, average speed, hours driven, etc. Having it cleaned up the front end including the cable. Love it!!

Thanks for the input fellas. Probably gonna go digital, to clean up the front end a little. Just nice to know the mechanical info also. Maybe a little down the road before I get to it, well at least after the holidays. Kinda tinkering with the idea of placing one in a headlight bucket. It would be really cool if I could find a bucket where I could place the tach right beside it.

Hell yes that's cool. Hmmm, on second thought could you see that in the current bucket position on the Merica ?

I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

Mine went crazy several years ago and it was just the worm gear. Dealer order. I think it was 35 bucks.
