"Short-headed rope-dancer", scientifically known as Petaurus breviceps. Commonly in the U.S. as Sugar Gliders. Thinking you Aussies might tend to call them possums. Anywho, been thinking about getting one for my son. Any of you have any dealings with them?

They are very fragile, need attention and bonding, should be in pairs, and like to escape. When rough play happens they bite.
They live over 10 years. If they are not going to be a hand animal and just in a cage, to a glider that is mean. They need to bond and get lonely.
My vote would be a no for a child.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

I had a desire to get one a few yrs ago. research told me that there diet makes them a messy little bugger to keep. They sure are a cute little monster though.

High maintenance according to the old timer that rescued a couple babies from a tree in our yard. If your son is too young, it might be too much responsibility (you and mom will have to pick up the slack) and if he's approaching his teen years - you guessed it; mom and dad will have to pick up the slack.

They are nocturnal animals. They will make lots of noise at night. Not a cage I'd want in my bedroom.
If someone is telling you they are a good pet, that's the guy trying to sell the one he no longer wants.
They don't belong in a cage any more than a bird does.

You mean dogs and cats or the rope-a-dope dancer?

Exotic pets are cool at first cause we love their "uniqueness". But it doesn't take long for the glow of something weirdly different to wear off, and then you're left with a "pet" that doesn't make a good pet. Please, get a dog. There's nothing on this planet that will love you more if you love it.
