I wanted a Speedo/Tach Combo gauge to replace the Tachometer in my tank console. Plus I wanted to remove the HUGE Speedometer off of my handle bar.

Dakota Digital Universal Gauge HLY-3016 Speed/Tach with Indicators is what I went with.

The tank consoles stock gauge whole is 2 1/4 or something like that. I needed a 3 3/8in whole.

Cutting the face off.

Face off of tank console.

Preparing to glue new face on.

Gluing the face on.

Face glued. Whole drilled with wholesaw blade.

Finished whole with dremel.

Applying Bondo-Hair. (Or chocolate as my son called it.)

Put some on the underside too.

Starting the sanding process.

First coat of primer to see where I need to touch up.

You can clearly see the lines I need to fix. More Bondo and Sanding.

Sorry forgot to mention. In this picture I used my Dremel with a cutting bit. It was easy to cut free hand.

A little tip if you do this. Make sure you use a variable speed Dremel. At a slower speed you get to benefits. One it seems easier to steady. Two it wont melt the plastic as it's cutting it.

I live in Baltimore County on the upper end near the Baltimore, Pennsylvania line. I'm like 10min. maybe off of 83. In White Hall Maryland.

I want more pics too!! Cuz that means my bike is done and ready to ride.

Is that a combo gauge or just a tach? It's cool looking for sure.

Hey Edwin, have you thought of taking a fiberglass plug off the finished item, you may be able to sell a few replicas?

I, for one, would be interested.

Pretty much finished with my tank console. Debating whether to put a matte clear coat on or just leave it as is.

I'm worried about what spilled gas will do to the paint.

Beautiful job! Definitely put some 2-comp clear on it. As you said, it will protect the console from getting ruined by gas spill.

I get very meticulous when I get into things. Sometimes it works for me other times it slows me down. In this case, worth it.

I used high temp engine paint on mine and don't have problems with gas, FWIW. If you're worried, and you've spent this much time already, clear it!

That looks great!!
Don't take this the wrong way, but have you thought about adding a "lip" around it to match the gas cap hole?

Yeah I was going to add a matching lip but then the riding season was calling me. It will be on my to do list for next winter. This was a last minute project I started right at the end of winter into the beginning of spring.

Ok! Finally! I have my new console on my bike.

[image][/image]

It's a Dakota Digital combo gauge.
[image][/image]

I got rid of my speedo cable and went with a sensor from Dakota Digital.

I didn't want an visible wires running to my swing arm So here is where I put my Speed sensor.
[image][/image]

The wire is completely hidden.
[image][/image]

View from a different angle.
[image][/image]

With the cover on.
[image][/image]

FYI I have no counter magnet attached to the gear. Dakota Digital said it wasn't necessary for their senor. So far it is reading like a champ!

Very nice job here, Edwin. Your ingenuity in this project is first rate, along with the execution!

Does your new speedo display all the "warning/idiot" lights info in it too?

(...I'm guessin' it does, 'cause I don't see 'em anywhere)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Yes it does Dwight. It can display anything your bike is wired for. Left, right blinker, high beam, neutral, oil (If you have sensor for it) and it can display what gear you're in.

It can even show 0 to 60 to a quarter mile time in the "Performance" menu section.

This gauge was totally worth the money.

On a side note. Visibility of the gauge in direct sunlight is perfect. The non-glare lens on the gauge in combination with the deep blue led read out makes it stellar!!

I am by no means a mechanic nor do I do any body work. Hehehe...I don't even own any real tools. What I used was a cheap stanely tool set and my father-in-laws old tools.

Looking awesome. Almost wants to make me put on the old tank with the console and do the same. Wait, I sold all that stuff. Well, still looks awesome.
