I got rid of all my guns when my son was young and been meaning to get something for protection when out on the road. Plus we haven't had a good gun thread for a while. Has anyone purchased one of these yet? The price is reasonable. Around $379. http://www.taurususa.com/news-detail.cfm?newsID=39What do you all carry?

That is a subject that freaks out most Canadians and I suspect Brits, Aussies, Kiwis and other sane folk in other words a big portion of the people watching this web site. What the "F" do you need one of those things for, shooting pigeons?

Probably be shooting paper targets most of the time, don't want to hurt a poor pigeon. But if a pigeon came into my house and tried to rob or hurt me I'd shoot his as$ in a second.

I do not own a firearm, but I have been thinking about getting my CCW permit. If for no other reason than to prolong my traffic stops by a paranoid cop.

+1 and then some. Iowa is debating right now a bill to allow people the right to use "deadly force" to defend themselves.

Know a bit about this topic, ok maybe more than a bit. Can't carry though seeings how IL is the only state to not have a CCW law. Anyway, the Taurus is probably fine but you may want to check a few other options. The Ruger SR9C and LC9 are in this category. If I were prone to carry, and frankly if I thought I really needed to in order to protect myself or my family I would permit or not, I'd go with my Springfield Armory XD 9 Subcompact. Lotta folks like Glock 26s as well.

I have been considering a Springfield Armory XD 45. Being close to their HQ in Geneseo, IL, I like the idea of supporting a local business.

I have a friend that got his ccw license and started carrying a 9 mm on road trips. Eventually he switched to a .380. Since cost is an issue for me, couldn't .380 be just as effective with the right round? You can get some of those for $299 or less. When I had my Dan Wesson .357 I shot mostly 38 rounds through it for target practice.

Some people motorcycle camp. I'm not one of them.
A lot of my friends have CCW permits (and use me as a reference) I just never jumped in myself. I'd have to get something smaller/different than my Para-Ordinance .45.

I prefer revolvers, just one of those things. My S&W 586 is a bit large (in my opinion) for concealed carry though so I'm looking into either a Charter arms .44 Pug or a .357 Magnum Pug.
Taurus makes fine weapons for reasonable prices. See if you can test fire one first though, it may or may not fit your hand. That's an important consideration in handguns. You may find an extremely sore thumb or web area of your hand after a couple of boxes.

I envy Americans so much for their constitution. We're TOLD what we can and can't have. I only have rifles but have shot a few pistols of different calibers from .22,.380,.38,357,9mm,.45.at firing ranges I like the .45 too Ian. The .357 out of my lever action is sweet. I've re-written this quite a few times 'cause it's a motorcycle forum and I don't want to get into a firearms "rant"

I too prefer a revolver, love my 38 and 357. I've owned a couple of Taurus hand guns and would by another. PES, a 380 acp is a good carry weapon, IMO

If you had to get rid of one of these which one would you pick? I've been told by others that the kel tec 32 is a nice one to carry with you especially on the bike.

Haven't gotten to the point where I carry while riding the bike. However, if I were I would go with my CZ-PO6 in .40SW. Excellent gun for concealed carry. I do have several friends who carry Kel-Tec PF-9's and a couple who carry Kahr CW-40's (I'm thinking about getting one of those myself)... very nice gun.

Todd, also have a 4" service model in .45. Actually had it first and liked it so much I bought the XD 9 Sub to go with it. The .45 is a great gun...pretty much indestructible, points to aim and always goes bang. Like the XDs so much I'm considering one for my daughter. I trust them that much.

The Walther PPS does look pretty sweet. Notice how it fits nicely in to your jeans pockets. I think they are between $549-$599, a little steep for something I may not use that often. A Walther PPK .380 is between $629-859.

Paul, if it's been awhile since you've owned a gun, especially if you're looking to carry, you're best bet is to go find a way to handle, possibly shoot, as many different options as possible. It has to be something you are comfortable with. Revolver, auto, .22, .32 .380, .38, 9mm, .357, .45, whatever, you'll want to get yourself to the point of where you can use it smoothly and effectively without a hitch in an incredibly stressful situation. There are a ton of small-ish guns suitable for carry under $400. Check 'em out. And please be aware of your local laws concerning the use of deadly force.

I've had a compact Taurus 9mm and the big .44mag Taurus Raging Bull for deer hunting, both bought new. I had problems with both.
The 9 was a small double action only with tritium sights. A month or so after I got it the front sight flew off at the range. I couldn't find it and Taurus refused to replace it, even if i paid for it.
The .44 magnum fired the first six rounds just fine but then I could not eject the brass. I had to pound them out with a rod. Turns out they had put the cylinder of a .45 Long Colt into the frame and with the barrel of a .44 magnum. You had to mic the cylinder to find the error. The .44 rounds fired just fine but the brass would expand in the slightly over sized cylinder and jam. It took Taurus six weeks to put the correct cylinder on. It always worked fine afer that.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

In addition to this keep in mind if you do carry, don't ever pull a gun unless you intend to use it. To pull one just as a show of force or a scare tactic can just escalate a situation.

I just got my CCW But NY state is all kind of screw up. The State says I can Carry any time. But then each county has its own laws that say you can only Carry during a "out door activity" hunting fishing hiking and such. Would riding be considered a out door activity maybe. It would probably depend on what I got pulled over for and I tend to ride to fast and don't want to chance it right now. So I Carry my little .22 of my grandfathers in the woods for now some day I get something better or I will get my ass in gear and put my fathers on my permit so I can use his 9mm or .45 or the many other target .22 he has.

I personally don't choose to carry a firearm but here's a tidbit I always share. After running over 5000 EMS calls, including quite a few gunshot wounds, I never encountered nor heard of anyone else encountering, a victim who was shot by a homeowner defending themselves.
Lots of other scenarios, though.

I'd get rid of that thing. Tritium is a radioactive isotope of helium with a half life of 12 years. Actually, if you held it in your hands, you're a goner.

Good advice Doug. OK is one of the original make my Day states so the gun laws here are pretty liberal. (that didn't sound right, liberal & gun laws?) Any way my big concerns since I do quite a bit of touring would be reciprocity with other states. A Member here a long time ago put up a site that showed all the states and guns laws compared with other states. I know for sure I'm good to go from here to the Ga Rally and to the SWTF.
