Dang... only a month ago we moved our dear Mother into a nursing home and today she fell and broke her hip. She's 12 hours away by car in Emergency while they find a room for her. This happened this morning at around 11:30. Surgery scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Mom's pushing 91... this is not good. She's also extremely allergic to any sort of anesthesia and becomes violently ill. Maybe they have new stuff that won't mess with her so much.

We are trying not to have any expectations, meaning anything could happen in the next 24 hours. All we can do is hope for the best and remain calm. I am sooooo glad I talked to her just 2 days ago. Right now I'm trying to get to her by phone at the hospital but I don't even know if she is lucid enough to talk. I called during a shift change and was asked to phone back later.

Dang, this mother stuff is tough as many of you can attest to. I just thought I'd kinda put this out there to ya'll just to get some of the heaviness off my chest. Hey, thanks for listening... I'll keep you posted.

DITTO!

My mother has been a DON (Director of Nursing)for about 30 years. This is unfortunatly a fairly common occurance.

I hope Your mom will be ok.

Just got through to the hospital all the way to the nursing station where my mother is. She was sleeping, apparently well medicated under the influence of morphine. I was glad to hear that. Tonight they are transferring her away from emergency and to a room. Thanks for your thoughts guys.

After your good news the other day this is a not so good. I was wondering how your mum has been fitting into the home now. That still was the right decsion for her. She had help on hand when she fell.If it had been at her old place might have been worse for her with no one about. You would have felt worse then. That you had'nt move her then and this would'nt have happened. So keep strong Keith. Hope all goes well . Atb geoff

Good luck with your Mom, Keith. You know, people always say "fell and broke their hip", but 9 times out of 10 they broke their hip (femur head) and that caused them to fall. I had a day at work, in my paramedic days, when my partner and I ran 11 straight calls that were broken hips. Freaky.

Hang in there Keith.
FWIW my Mom is 94. In April she fell and broke her hip.
Or, as Smokey said, she broke her hip and then fell down.
The Doc said she might not survive an hip replacement op
but the alternative was her being bed ridden. She had it.
Three days later, she was on her feet. A couple of months
later she fell again, and broke her pelvis. No surgical
remedy for this, but with time she recovered. Lots of time
and rehab, and she's home with a 24/7 health care aid.
Chin up mate, and keep a stiff upper lip.
You have loads of support, love, and prayers on the way.
I've been down this road, call me if you want to talk.

Uncle Charlie

Thanks for all your posts here, folks. And to those of you who've been through this before, your words really help.

Update: Mom had her surgery this morning. Apparently they put some sort of rod in her hip to fix things up... I don't really know. But the nurse I talked to said the surgery went well and she's "very comfortable." She opens her eyes from time to time, then just drifts right back to sleep. All in all, the news is quite positive. I'll know more later on from a sister who lives near Mom and is able visit.

Whew... our elderly parents sure can be a worry! Thanks again one and all for the show of support.

My mom isn't as old as yours but my mom just had knee surgery and it had me worried too. Anything can happen during anesthesia.

My mom had a similar incident years ago, and a similar repair.

The femur (or, technically, the 'big leg bone') near the top juts off at an angle to attach to the hip. This upper portion is called the femur head. Because it is not straight up and down like the rest of the femur it has to handle a lot of force (i.e. our full body weight) when we walk. As we get older our bones tend to get thinner and, consequently, more brittle, especially for women, especially if they have osteoporosis. The femur head is what breaks in the 'fall and break' scenario. Since the bone is already fragile (rebreaks are common and often surgery is denied) a rod is attached to the femur head to strengthen it. The good news, Keith, is that they probably wouldn't have gone through with the procedure unless they think the probability is there for a successful outcome.

Today marks one day after the hip surgery and Mom was able to sit up and have breakfast this morning. I'm told she is relatively comfortable but still a bit 'out of it' understandably. I'm actually starting to think this whole thing could just work out with Mom returning to the nursing home in the near future. Amazing!!

All of your support here in this tread helped significantly and I just want to thank everyone who chimed in. Very much appreciated!

Just an update on good ol' Mom. Today she was released from the hospital and is now back in the nursing home. I spoke with her and she sounded good over the phone... there was strength in her voice. But she is bed ridden for now and in serious pain as her hip heals. I believe she still has some time on this here earth... I just hope she lives it in reasonable comfort. Anyway, things turned out amazing well all things considered!

I told my Mom the story you shared about your Mom breaking a hip & a pelvis in the same year and that she's doing alright at 94. My nearly 91 yo Mother got some encouragement from that I noticed.
