He is a good lookin kid....is he adopted?

Seriously, I'll try not to get corny, but my father taught me a lot about life. I miss him, but the memories of time sent doing things together are priceless. All my interest I learned from him. Hunting, fishing, golf, etc. the things I do well he taught me. I'm sure you love your son, but you'll appreciate him more as he gets older. Good times ahead.

I have already told him to treat all car drivers as if they are drunk, stoned, eating a sandwich, reading a book, lost or facebooking on their phones as they are driving. I figure the odds of me being right are pretty good.
I don't plan on letting him out by himself until I believe he has some chance of surviving the big city driving around here.He can call it Daddy bootcamp. I commute into the city most days and am pretty familiar with the situation he is about to get in to.

So, I got him the Yamaha V Star 650. Bike is good....but has this weird miss at idle. Its not a full miss more like a sneeze, but it only does it on idle. Any ideas why? Bad gas? Put in new plugs and oil change, cleaned the air filter. Dont know how old the gas is.

Might be a vacuum leak. It probably has some squirrel condoms somewhere as well as vacuum lines and intake boots.

I can see how it could be a vacuum leak, its still has all the A.I. cp@p on it. But why would it only miss at idle? It runs fine under load.

Well put.

Not too many 18 yr olds get new hot rod cars either. Risky, but some get over it.

I just finished the bike safety class this past weekend. It was a great weekend and I recommend it. Great tips, a little expensive but you can never spend too much on your own safety. Plus the little 200cc dual purpose bikes were fun to whip around on for the weekend. haha.
As for a first bike, I went with the america. I myself would not get anything smaller. I feel the smaller bikes I would out grow quickly. Also on highway riding, I feel comfortable and it has enough power to pass or get out of situations quickly. Whatever you choose for him, he will love it!

If the bikes been sitting I could be bad gas gummed up pilots unless its efi. Or any vacuum hose or squirrel condom. Its bound to be a simple fix.

Small vacuum leaks usually only affect the idle. Once the RPM comes up the leak is rendered insignificant bu the higher demand for air.

Shouldn't have gotten a rice burner. I would rather ride a milwaukee tractor.

mmmmkay.....He needs his first bike to be light, with low HP and cheap to repair when he drops it(and he will, everyone does)also his budget is $2500.

Ok Chad if you can find me a HD that fits that criteria then your right....I should have got him that.

And there's me thinking a first bike should be one to get actual road riding experience on and maybe some minor repairs

Not one where you have to stop every couple of miles to run down the road picking up bits that have shaken loose

(there should be some smilies here, but I'm far too rat arsed for that sort of decision making)

Screw that American Pride crap, Yamahas are well built machines. I gotta 72 enduro, beat to piss, sitting in the rain right now, that'll start up on 4 kicks and a half a choke.

Its not WHERE its made, its HOW its made.

i kinda think every newby shoud start in the dirt, it is where you can really learn about riding. so in that line of thinking maybe a dualsport should be the way to go. a little time on the road a little time off the road and as the person gets more confident and knowledgeble then they can decide which form of riding they prefer and if it is road they will be better prepared. just thinking, i mean most of us with a few yrs behind us probably started out at some very young age with a stripped down 50-125cc yamahonzuki of some kind that we beat the crap out of and then sold to the next kid in the hood that could come up with the $50 we paid for it and then we went on to something else and eventually ended up here. it just makes sense to me and i would bet that the better riders you know today started out that way and probably never stopped riding. even the ones that stopped for several yrs due to life and have now returned to riding, probably passed the riding course with better grades then those who didnt. would love to check that stat

ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

America and Japan aren't the only places bikes are made, and there are "Jap bikes" that are made in the US. Honda shadows, and Goldwings are. Motoguzzi, Enfield, BMW, and Triumph, are good options that can be found used at reasonable prices. You don't have to just jump to a "jap bike".
I do like some "jap" bikes, older ones are really cool. I know a goldwing is out of the question for a newbie but man what a sweet bike they are. The new Royal Enfield is a sweet little 500 cc british bike that won't break the bank.

Hey now Chet, youre the one picking a harley over a yamaha based on the nationality of the manufacturer like theres only 2 places to buy from. The quality of the bike doesnt concern you because its a rice burner.

That kinda mentality just rubs me the wrong way. I could see if we were talking about a cheap Chinese bike, but you cant deny yamaha being a reliable name thats had its fair share of innovative designs as well. Theyve done a lot more than Harley has over the years.

Its ironic that you said you liked the old jap bikes because those same bikes started the whole "rice burner" moniker that youre still clinging to 40+ years later.

Tom, the name is Chad. We have discussed this previously. Second the remark about "milwaukee tractors" was sarcasm that was intended to be pointed at Harley and a joke to Bill about "the only real bike is Harley". Yep it missed the mark alright.
Of coarse I would like to see more support go to other makers.

Tony, I made a mistake earlier when I stated that a new BSA could be obtained with out breaking the bank. I had Royal Enfield in mind and confused the name. Here in Houston an Enfield can be gotten at Polaris west in Katy for 5000 bucks. They are sweet looking little 500cc bikes that really time warp ya back to the 60s. Sorry for the mistake I simply switched the name in my brain for some reason.

Chet was a joke refering to the previous name incident.

I know your name is Chad, it was all a big misunderstanding.
