On my way home from Work on the 5th of July, I had a small accident with my bike. I had been only 4 blocks from work and had just waved goodbye to my commander at the precinct when some NUMB SKULL IDIOT yarded out in front of traffic ahead of me and other cars. Suddenly I went from 5 car lengths behind the cars ahead of me to 3, and applied my brakes. All my outs closed up as there was a tow truck to my left, and all the cars shead of me were swerving and skidding throughout their entire lanes all the way to the shoulder. My back tire started a skid and then the bike started to shift out from under me. I tried to correct and then the bike just listed over to the right side. As soon as I realized the bike was down, I tried to get my body up and away, but was so discouraged that my bike was scraping the ground that I smacked the front of my helmet into the road as I tried to curl up and get my jacket armour to protect me. I tried to curl up and roll away from danger, keeping my armour out to protect me, but I actually bounced and came to a stop in about 10 feet or so.
Thankfully the person in the car I avoided hitting was also a nurse and rushed back to help as I was trying to get up. I had the thought "It's a good thing I was wearing my overpants, or this could have been bad, how bad is the bike?" Then I looked down and saw my jeans and my knee torn open and remembered, oh yeah, I was in a hurry and couldn't find them that morning and thought it was going to be a warm day anyway. Seeing my pants and knee torn open kind of made me think I should be concerned about myself a bit more...Ok, so don't put weight on that, it might be hurt pretty bad, how do I lift my bike with one leg? Crazy, I know, but I was worried about my bike.
Now, I am going to hear about this for a while. The chief showed up at the accident, as I was being put in the ambulance and saw me getting upset that they were leaving my bike there, and he authorized one of the officers to take it back to the precinct for me. Then my Captain and Luitenant showed up at the hospital. I had an officer with me the whole time communicating with my husband what was going on and where they were taking me, and waiting for him to get to me. I have alredy heard the jokes are going around that my partner had to work alone the next day since I apparently didn't know how to drive, and hear that there are plenty of lectures waiting for me. My dad's celebration of life was planned for Saturday and they were thinking I was still dealing with grief and shouldn't haave been riding yet.
The pictures on facebook only show the prettier picture of stitches, not the torn open or scrubbed out open wound.
Now I'm waiting to hear from a adjuster about my claim, and trying to figure out what will happen with my bike. So far all I can tell from pictures that were sent to me is that the bike scraped the engine guard, pipes, the trunk, and might have damage to the brake lever. The right signal got damged pretty bad too. Looks like I actually got the worse end of the deal, but we will see which of us gets the higher repair bill. Ambulance rides can't be cheap...I'm voting I beat my bike on that one too.

Sorry to hear this, Laurie. However, from the sounds of it, you're doin' pretty well, all things considered, and the bike doesn't sound as if its in all that bad a shape, either.

Your bike looks fine. Your knee, well let's hope you can put full weight on it soon . 6 days post lowside and your prose reads as if the trauma is behind you.

That's a shame, but at least you're fairly ok. It happens to everyone and you'll probably spend hours trying to go back and figure out how you could have done better. Posting about your spill is one of the mature ways for you to work it out in your head. The main things are to heal up, do the "head work", learn and ride again! Here's to ya, and remember, "shiny side up!

I am glad you were not damaged beyond repair, and will be alright. Sorry you work with a bunch of jerks that found it a joke worthy occasion. Some people are just that way. Get well soon.

You're not crazy. Well, that or we're both crazy. When I laid mine down 3 weeks ago I was more worried about my bike than myself.

Glad you didn't sustain any significant injuries and hopefully the wise-crackers won't take it to far.

Heal soon and as was told to me... get back on the horse.

Sorry to hear about your spill Laurie. At least it was nothing life threatening. It is all part of the learning curve sometimes. As soon as you are able get back on a bike. It is normal to worry about the motorcycle as it means so much to you. The thing is it can be repaired. Get well soon.

I am so sorry Laurie. I hope you heal fast and am sure your bill will outweigh your bikes. But it's only money and metal and your being OK is most important. All my best for a quick recovery for you and your bike.

Its just a bike, its fixable. Glad the injuries were not worse. Hoping for a quick recovery. Yep, you are gonna tease a lot at work.

Don't beat yourself up on the what if parts of the accident. Once it starts to leave you like that there is no getting it back. It is gonna slide out from under you. Your brain won't let you take your foot off the brake.

Looks like another case where ABS or linked braking may have been a great help.

REALLY sorry to hear about your misfortune! Like is said above, the bike can get fixed and you can heal - luckly it doesn't sound horrible for either. Take care and get healed up REAL SOON. The roads are calling.

Laurie. glad to hear you'll be ok. Sounds like you did the only thing you could. Lay her down and ride another day.

Sorry to hear of your crash, glad you were not seriously hurt. In a crash don't roll, better to slide, when you roll you bounce and break more bones. I can't see facebook so can't comment on the pix. Get well soon and hope the bike is an easy fix.

As for pain pills, I'm allergic to almost all that could have helped so when they stitched me up they had numbed it to scrub it out but otherwise I can only have Advil, Tylonol or asprin. So...When they asked if I wanted something for the pain to go home, I was thinking that it hurts, but I can make it home and take some Advil only half an hour from home...NOT! Oh man! Every angry nerve that got scoured with gauze came searing back into hot fury and hurt like crazy! I actually cried! I joked that my pride was more hurt than anything, so obviously my sense of humor was only minimally bruised in all of this too.

Anyone else that goes down, when the doc asks if you want something for pain, you should always say YES! I'm limited to high doses of Tylenol and Advil to get through this, which is not fun, but it sure keeps me from over pushing through the injury. It hurts, and I stop...pretty simple.
I know it is "just a bike" but there is so much to that bike that it feels like an extension of me! I feel like I need to tell her I am sorry I let her down like that. Good thing is, the insurance calls it not at fault accident and the Jerk got away, so I have to pay the 500 dollar deductible to fix the bike. The insurance is going to tow my bike to Cascade Moto Classics and have the adjuster look it over. I don't see how they could total it, and they said I just have to pay the shop the deductible when it is fixed.

As for my guys at work, they care about me, and that is how we all are to joke through rough times. I even cracked jokes while in the hospital. The Nurse was saying this is bad, but it is just one of those bumps in life...I immediately shot back, yep, "Yes, I WAS that bump in the road!" Pretty typical of me...sometimes I don't know HOW Soren puts up with me...although he is much like me too.

Glad you're ok and are going to be better.

If you can laugh about it, then you're going to get over it pretty well.

Your bike doesn't look too bad , it's just a shame about you having to pay the deductible

That deductable sucks though when it is not your fault.

I hope your knee is OK. Bikes can be fixed. Good thing you had your helmet on when your head smacked the pavement or you might not be worried about you bike.

Bad luck there. Glad you're not hurt too badly and the bike is fixable.
Ice packs help for pain, I don't like pain pills so ice is a staple treatment for me.

Sorry to hear of your accident. I hope you recover quickly. At least your "dropped my bike" confession didn't happen in your own driveway.

A bit late chiming in here Laurie, but please accept my care and concern for you especially... followed by your bike. I am so glad it was not worse, although it IS huge trauma to be sure. May you AND your bike be up and riding with all the confidence of the brave hearts you are!! Thanks for sharing this utmost personal of tales!

Sorry to hear about you mishap, I'm sure you have someone waiting on you hand and foot! Don't rush your injuries,it takes longer to heal if it gets re-injured.

What a shocker...Glad to hear that you are on the mend and things appear to not be too serious. The bike can be repaired with new parts. You have to heal....

Take care, and milk the injury for all it's worth with your better half.

Well, just added more pictures to the facebook album...Now the bike is at the shop and we are seeing just how bad the damage is. Now I'm not so sure which of us gets the bigger fix it bill.
Really hope that she's fixable and I get her back soon. While inspecting the damage this morning, one of my officers thought I was fussing over her getting a bit wet in the rain, not realizing she was damaged. I hope it is not too bad and I can have her back.

Sorry to hear about all this and truly hope you are on the mend. Having had my own accident 3 years ago, I can understand some of the feelings you are going through. Hopefully, the insurance company won't total the bike and you can ride soon with a few "battle scars" and the stories accompanying them.

My goodness Laurie, both you and the bike sure got damaged. I hope your knee is getting better and not causing you too much pain.

I feel for you with the bike damage. They're such fun toys and so hard to see them damaged. Hope the bike can be fixed soon. Keep us up to date.
