Sorry Brian, but while I love listening to "The Star-Spangled Banner"(though NOT when some friggin' singer wants to impress us with their voice by throwin' in all that coloratura crap!!!), I gotta say that I'd probably get pretty friggin' tired of listenin' to your "sound of freedom" there after about a 10 minute ride on your bike...OR after ridin' BEHIND your bike for that same 10 minutes!

(...yep, I gotta say your bike's "coloratura" might wear on me a bit too!)

Taking just about ANY bike (loud, quiet or anything in between) and revvin' 'er up is the 'sound of freedom' in my books!

The town of Bat Cave (next to Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, etc., in other words primo motorcycling) is considering banning motorcycles because of loud pipes. I can see their point. It is in a gorge and a loud anything can be heard for miles. The problem is, it won't just be the loud bikes they ban. All of us will be penalized. You can't bypass Bat Cave, either, without bypassing the whole area.
If you've ever seen 'Last of the Mohicans' it was all filmed in that area.

There's more than one reason for those pipes. First off, I think they're cool.
Sound, look, lightweight...
And I know they help keep me safe.
Every ride, I see cagers start to cut me off, then swerve back in line.
With the stock mufflers, they just cut me off, didn't seem to
know I was there.
Also, the throttle works both ways, if I'm light on it, it's not disturbing.
I live half a mile from the Sheriff's office, have had the bike for 5 years,
they would have nailed me long ago if it was that bad.
Dwight, you wouldn't have to worry about listening to it for very long.
You see, it gets quieter and quieter as I pull away.

As I've mentioned many tmes, I have friends who drive emergency vehicles (cops, EMTs, fire fighters) they all have the same observation: People don't see them with flashing lights (lots of lights on Vegas emergency vehicles), and they don't hear the sirens. They won't see you or hear your pipes either. You have to take responsibility for your own safety when you ride and not rely on some urban myth. Your experiences are likely with people who are somewhat paying attention anyway, not with some yoyo texting while their music is blasting and the windows are up.
Or with some other specimens who shouldn't be on the roads but are anyway.

I read a report a couple years back, I think it was the Insurance Institute but I'm not sure, that shows there is absolutely no statistical evidence that loud pipes do anything to improve your safety. I doubt anyone can produce a scientific study that shows otherwise. Count me in, as a former paramedic, folks miss an ambulance with lights and a siren. People do not hear your pipes unless they are in an arc behind you, either, which does you no good.
While we often think of sport bike riders as dangerous there was a "statistical snapshot" of what the "typical motorcycle accident victim" looks like in the article. Contrary to most assumptions about sport bikes, our 'victim' was a 42 year old cruiser rider (which, just based on the number on the road, would likely have been a Harley) with aftermarket pipes and alcohol was likely to be involved. Their data got even more complex but that was the gist of it.
I know a lot of you think they are cool. At some point in your life you probably lived above, below, or next to the guy/kid who blared Prince until you wanted to kill him. He thought that was cool, too.

Yeah Brian. If I recall correctly, you had those excessively loud pipes on a Speedmaster...NOT on a Speed Triple!

So tell me here...what's your plan about bein' able to "pull away" from me, huh?!

(...oh, and Bill, good point about the siren/loud exhaust correlation there!)

Ya know, the more I think of this "excessively loud exhaust" issue, the more I'm convinced that what's behind some of it is the idea that those who feel they're "safer" runnin' 'em have the mindset of somethin' like:

"I run these here pipes on my bike because I want cagers to know that I'm one badass, devil-may-care, freedom-flauntin' tough hombre who you better not mess with by cuttin' me off out there on the road. Because, if I don't care about YOUR right to drive in a REASONABLY peaceful environment, do you think for one second that if you cut me off, that this badass, devil-may-care, freedom-flauntin' tough hombre here won't hunt you down and kick your ass?!"

Yep, I'm beginnin' to think that this particular psychology might have at least a little somethin' to do with this whole thing, and NOT just somethin' like, "Oh please Mr. Cager, notice me here, if you will!"

(...of course, in order to REALLY give that badass impression to all the cagers out there, one must ALWAYS just wear a doo-rag and NEVER a helmet...that, of course, REALLY gives the impression[I'm talkin' the "LOOK of Freedom" here, and NOT just the "SOUND of Freedom", you understand] to all those cagers out there of what a TRULY devil-may-care, freedom-flauntin' tough hombre one is!!!!)

Safe or not I like loud pipes. Brian your's sound good. I've heard way louder, BUBS on a T-100, they sound like NASCAR a quarter mile away.

If you like them keep them, it's your bike. It would be interesting to know how many folks on this forum actually have those sewing machine sounding stock mufflers installed.

Well, since you did not ask me, I will tell you my thoughts. Loud pipes do get attention. There is simply no argument against that. The more people around you that know you are there, the safer. Balance that against the obnoxion of loud pipes, find your equilibrium, ride safely, move on.

Well Mac, if you're gonna take a poll here, you DO know, don't ya, that there's a thing called "a happy medium" between those excessively loud pipes AND those "sewing machine sounding stock mufflers"...RIGHT?! Yep, you DO know that, right?!

Wonder how many folks have been run off the road because their obnoxious pipe pissed off the wrong person? I've worked 'road rage' calls that were set off by a lot less.

I clipped a baseball card against my spokes to make my bike noisier when I was five but I've moved on.

Well Chet, evidently THOSE guys probably weren't projecting enough of that "badass, devil-may-care, freedom-flauntin' one tough hombre, don't mess with me" image to the motorists who ran 'em off the road...THAT'S all!!!

(...they probably just made the "mistake" of wearin' a helmet, and thus that ol' wuss-factor probably reared its ugly head, huh?!)

If you want sewing machine sounds, then you want stock pipes on a liquid cooled triple. I still run stock pipes and my bike's way louder than them.

BTW, even with stock pipes, I'm surprised how many car, van, lorry etc drivers get out of the way to let me filter through traffic.

Another BTW, I do intend to make mine louder to get a better sound, but not too loud, and that's though choice, not some claim for safety reasons

That's pretty much exactly my point. It's the loud, obnoxious bikes that are going to bring the do gooders down on us and they won't want to stop with just the loudest bikes. Towns are already banning bike because a few fit Dwight's description. I don't like picking up the check because somebody else desperately needs people to turn their heads in their direction.
Cartman, from South Park, had a great line when the Harley rider told him that, if he was intimidated by his bike, that's just too bad.
Cartman replied, "Intimidated? Oh no. The only people with that desperate a need for attention are thirteen year old girls...and you."

Well Bill, you make some interesting points.
It's a shame you're dead wrong.
I've seen it, two days in a row.
First day, stock mufflers, cut off right and left, I'm invisible.
Second day, shorties, they stay put in their lanes.
Several actually start to move into my lane, then swerve back.
It was a 45 minute commute, heavy city traffic, lots of stop & go.
It happened. Not makin' it up. Saw it with my own eyes.
And if you'll note, I said they help keep me safe.
I just passed a milestone, 40 years riding. I know the real things
keeping me safe are vigilance, experience, with a healthy
dose of paranoia thrown in. Anyone care to try it? Compare
the actions of the traffic around you, back-to-back, stock
mufflers to aftermarket. They don't act the same.
Still a bunch of morons,
but better.

I don't claim safety reasons, I don't need attention, I also don't care if I piss anyone off, I just like the way my bike sounds loud. It is completely for my own pleasure same with wendy her's is even louder than mine and she loves it. Even if legislated against mine will still be loud. They require inspection too and my BMW hasn't been inspected since 1982 and I ride that around when ever and where ever I want and never get ticketed. The 1982 sticker is displayed prominently above my tail light smack in the middle of my rear fender too. I figure if I get pulled over now I saved a ton of money. (cost of inspection all those years vs. the fine)

Well Brian, all I can say here is that I have 44 years of riding experience myself, AND almost ALL of it on the streets of LOS ANGELES, and almost all of that on motorcycles that had or have exhausts that were/are..lets say on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the loudest..about a 5 or maybe a 6.

And so, you tell me...Do you possibly think that the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami FL area has ANYWHERE NEAR the car traffic that Greater L.A. County has???

(...and I'm still around to tell the tale here TOO, ya know!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I have to say my BMW (1964) has the stock exhaust on it and I have to start it before anyone else so I can tell if mine is running or not. I am no safer on any of my loud bikes than I am on that bike because I pay close attention to my surroundings when I ride and anticipate people pulling out in front of me even when they don't look like they will.

Well, welcome to "Ian's World", everybody! A place where ya have the "freedom" to do whatever the hell ya want, and without any concept of "personal restraint" or little consideration for others.

(...earplugs required!)

I am plenty considerate, I stay the he!! outa their business and they stay outa mine. My pipes are not as loud as the road crew in front of my house with spot lights pointed out at my bed room window when I am trying to sleep because I have to go to work early in the morning. Or those clowns with the thump thump sterios that drown out my TV when they drive by. So don't give me that consideration BS, you might hear my pipes for a minute as I drive by, maybe, if I am going slow. They are not nearly loud enough to hear over a TV when I go by. I don't have any neighbors close enough to hear my bike when I start it either and if I did it wouldn't change anything.

Well Brian, I, too, have 40+ years of riding AND over 5000 emergency calls as a paramedic and, despite the results of your well designed scientific study, Bill is exactly correct.

Ian, as of last year, if you lived in North Carolina, and soon to be coming to a state near you, you would be unable to register your bike without a current inspection. As part of the the 2007 federal budget, future highway funding to the states will be dependent each state adopting the same policy within, as I recall, 5 years (it might be 7). So, unless your state is opting out of future highway funding, you've got another year, maybe two, and afterward you'll also be proudly riding with expired plates. They might make an exception for you if you tell them you don't care.

Hey now Chet...I don't think Ian has much to worry about there.

(...'cause word is all the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania end at the border to IAN'S WORLD!!!)

It is currently in the works to do away with inspection all together in PA for all vehicles.
