I prefer to avoid large gatherings of people, anyway. Not my idea of fun. Judging by the seemingly endless caravans of motorcyclists riding together down the road, lots of people enjoy it. Not me. An empty road, a warm day, maybe one other bike, that's my idea of fun.

+1 I prefer to ride alone or with just a couple or three friends.Same thing with large groups of folks.I was at a blues festival here on the weekend. It was very good but too crowded for me to really relax and enjoy

You guys haven't been to the right large gathering. I got pics of some that were great fun. Granted some of them are quite annoying and not much fun at all. You gotta know which ones to attend and which ones not to bother with.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

Yeah! And besides Chet, it seems the Hells Angels might've mellowed a little bit...well, at least maybe some of the hierarchy of that "fine" organization, anyway. Ya see, just yesterday I received my July/August edition of the AARP magazine, and within the pages of this publication there was a whole 6 pages about how us older folks are and/or can get into the world of motorcycling. There was a little something about what kind of motorcycle might be best to look for, too. For instance, Dave Nichols(whoever the hell HE is) wrote about Cruisers and Baggers. And, all I can say here is Dave evidently "really knows" his stuff, boy. In the "Cruiser" column he states: "Can you see yourself sporting a black leather jacket and slurring, 'Let's split', a la Marlon Brando? If so. you're cruiser material. Cruisers are low and lean street bikes that come in both Asian and American models." And then Dave goes on to list a Harley Dyna Wide Glide, a Honda Fury and a Yamaha Road Star as his 3 examples of what kind of bike you should look into if you're interested in this style of machine. And THIS, I remind you, is AFTER Dave quotes a line of Brando's in "The Wide One", which it seems Dave has forgotten(but my money's on that he never really knew) that Brando rode a freakin' TRIUMPH in that movie, and it's ALSO juuuuuust slightly possible that Dave doesn't ALSO know that, yep, Triumph, that BRITISH company, is still makin' motorcycles, and in particular, a very nice lineup of(believe it or not Dave) CRUISERS TOO!!! Yeah, Dave "really knows" his stuff, alright! BUT, the reason I'm REALLY writing this here is that in these same 6 pages there's ALSO an article by none other than 72 year-old Sonny Barger himself, and HIS little article is titled: "Must-Know Safety Tips"! Uh huh, I kid you NOT!!! (...and so, ya see, like I was sayin' above, evidently at least SOME of the Hells Angels have really mellowed in their Golden Years, EH???!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I've been going to Laconia for bike week for as long as I can remember. I'm 100 miles away so I can even watch the weather. I can't wait!

Yep Jason, but evidently that bit of old news hasn't hit the Nichols family quite yet!

Sonny Barger writing for AARP. Now that is a helluva note. AARP can certainly choose whomever they please as writers but I can choose to ignore his attempt to rehabilitate his image. I am surprised he is still alive.

Interesting article, thanks. Here in Maryland, the "Avengers MC" appears to be fronting for the Pagans. The article states all the big clubs are trying to boost membership and that appears to be the case here. From local news reports, the Pagans were trying to kill Avengers officers, but now the Avengers appear to have settled that and are are doing their dirty work. The ones I have seen would be described as "scum-bags".
