After about two hours of riding, I have such pain between my shoulders and upper back. I am considering either risers that also pullback or a new set of handlebars, for my '07 America. Any thoughts? What works for you?

These are the risers Dave's talking about. I got 'em too and like them a lot.

Exactly same issue I'm trying to solve at moment. I've adjusted the bar backwards on -09 america and at moment it's approx 10,5" pullback and 8" rise. The width of bar seems to be some 34". Still don't feel good. Probably I'd liked to keep the handlebar about on same level, but pullback more. The handlebar is bit too wide, would probably be better few inch narrower. Also thinking if the grips would be near 45 degrees (downwards:) so the wrists would be more relaxed. I wonder if anyone had ideas if this is possibe to achieve by bar change (+pb risers)? Have seen some promising HD bar but lost it. It would really help to see some pics. Keith's black one seems to be kinda what I'm looking for but not sure if I'd wanna keep the original bar.

Had the same issue - didn't want to be leaning over the bike. I found that stainless HD-FLH bars work real good (and the bike still doesn't leak oil with the HD added ) and they are only about $60. Also, on my BA, I didn't need to put on longer cables, just re-route the throttle to the right side of the frame.

This looks promising. Probably even works if it's directed more backwards as the grips section would bend down nicely giving good angle in wrists?!

I have the same pain problem, usually after 7 or 8 hours of riding. But, not always. Real sharp pain between the shoulder blades. I put pull back risers on my America, but it didn't seem to make much difference. The issue is so sporadic that I finnaly gave up trying to figue it out.

Riding THAT long will cause most riders to feel it in one place or another. Heck, for me even DRIVING hurts after so many hours!!!

This set up might suit ...

I have a frozen shoulder and found my America bars a bit wide for comfort.

I fitted the Rivco risers and Speedmaster bars (31" wide - 3 or 4 inches narrower than the America bars). The risers give 12" pullback (measured horizontally from the base of the risers to an imaginary line between the end of the grips) and 4" vertical rise (measured between the risers). I have the grips angled down at about 30 degrees, but the angle is variable. Where you have this angle also determines how much rise you have.

My Rivco risers are the same as Wendy's (Dog33's wife).

I have more pics (from the side) if you are interested.

Cheers, Richard

My problems are due to tennis elbow kind of symptoms, so I think the handlebar ergonomics is essential.
It sure would make things easier to solve if anyone knew what the stock america's handlebar measurements actually are ? ( -> could try find out a close match with handlebar from net (+pb riser)).
In any case I feel that taking out few inches of the width would make it better for me (like in Richard's bike).

Thanks for the link Tony ! This measurements list helps a lot !
Visited yesterday a shop and sat on few newer bikes. Indeed the new TBA bar felt better to me as mine. There's much more pullback like the list tells. Again new speedmaster and that felt a bit better to me than new TBA handlebar. But the suprise came when sat on Vulcan900 (sorry guys it's a jap...but it's only the handlebar i talk about ). It had the classic low bar and that made it feel real good to me. I believe it's really a lottery to find good handlebar, but now I got some guidelines which way to go. Probably the right height is as important to me as the reach. In my case allowing elboes to be quite near 90 degrees feels good.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Has anyone tried the buckhorn handlebars that Newspeedmaster.com sells? I am trying to post a link but I am not sure it will come out.

Haha, I suck at this. Oh well I can't seem to get the whole add to come up. Also on the Rivco risers, do they raise the bars as well as pullback?

Hi Robert, sorry for messing up a bit your discussion. It seems you got same model america as I do (even colour).
It seems to me that on some pages they don't exactly give the numbers for both pullback and raise. I think both is essential in case it's truly a pullback riser in question. If you got some model nbr, perhaps you could find more accurate info on some other page or perhaps asking directly from seller. It seems to me that you can adjust the bar to certain limit by a riser , but if the problem is the handlebars itself , perhaps better to start by checking out that buckhorn.

Yes. 6" rise, 5" pullback.

I finally got my positioning right after buying some western bars with adjustable risers.

The trouble with trying to find that sweet spot where it's just right is, you need to ride for a while and have the ability to tweak here and there otherwise you may just find what you thought was going tonwork doesn't. So unless you can ride someone else's bike where they just happen to be perfect, how is anyone able to try before they buy???

Anyway, I can honestly say now, mine are as good as I want them to be other than I've been thinking of a vaiation in style, not position.

When I get a moment I'll post some pics if you want.

Pls send some pics ! Could you give your height as well as I think it's cruasial thing to know if your handlebar would be ok for others too (without mods).

I hated the drag bars on my speedy, same thing with pain in the shoulders. I put america risers on with 12" narrow apes from biltwell. Perfect fit. Pics on my bike are in the members rides section if you wanna check it out.

I like the drag bars on my 07SM, however I like them much more rotated up a few degrees, with the controls adjusted down accordingly. That little move increased the effective rise & pullback, & it was free.

Lasse, you asked for pics so here's a few. Fyi, I'm a tad over 6 feet tall but that doesn't matter too much really unless you have abnormally short arms cos the risers are adjustable as these pics should show.

Just keep in mind the first pic just shows the bars with the risers I bought to go with them and found I still didn't have that completely relaxed feel I was after.

That's when I found the adjustabel risers and from there I never looked back. Also, keep in mind you WILL need longer cables than stock for this setup.

Btw, I hadn't been on a ride for a little while for various reasons but on the way to work today, I thought to myself I'm not changing my setup, they are spot on.

Anyway, Hope this helps.

Stacka,
thanks for your pics!
In your setup , is there need to change wires also for america (I'm not sure if it's speedm in pics..) ?
Local dealer here seems to have here a bar called 'Shuffle' with height 4",width 32", pullback 13,5". Looks like america's stock bar is height 6", width 34" and pb 11", so I might manage without fixing wires ? If it ain't good then I'll involve an adjustable riser.

Yes Lasse, I did buy and install longer cables but as it turned out the quality and ease of use of Barnett Cables was a big bonus all things considered. They are simply top quality.

The process of my finally getting the positioning right was a trial and error thing having started with SM bars and Deuce Risers to ending up with what I have now.

By process I mean I tried various combinations of bars and cables. If you have TBA cables and you re-route them to the right side of the frame you can add a couple of inches to using TBA bars with stock risers. Any longer than that and you'll need to buy longer control and break cables.

In my situation though, I knew they wouldn't be long enough so I bit the bullet and asked Barnett to make me the TBA control cable set but 2 or 3 inches longer but don't quote me cos I measured to get the right length.

Good luck
