Seems you're a quick study, eh Terry?!

And regarding the Sportster's vibration factor...It has seemed a little strange to me that with all the money H-D(especially) was raking in during the motorcycle boom years of the 90s and early 2000s, that they couldn't seem to find the money to update their Sportster engine by re-designing a balance-shaft into it.

I mean, during this same time-frame, Mr. Bloor's company designed and started manufacturing a whole new air-cooled Twin that doesn't vibrate all that much, right?! And, because Triumph at the time was still operating in the red(word is Triumph didn't turn an initial profit until 2001), I feel that there was little excuse for H-D to have not done the aforementioned updates on their Sportster's engine design.

I think you did the right thing. Out of all the HDs I rode during Harley Demo Day last year, the Sportster and... what's that other one... oh, the Cross Bones were the least desirable. The geezer glides were pretty nice though.

I've mentioned elsewhere that my BFCG (Best Friend Charlie G.) has a Sportster and now I want to see if I can ride it again, because I don't recall the vibration/noise/etc to be all that bad. I rather enjoyed riding it. Of course, if you've read my other posts here, you'll know I'm a total greenhorn when it comes to riding motorcycles, so maybe I just didn't know any better. It was also some 3 years ago. I do know it's stock except for rear shocks and some aesthetic pieces like a logo'd gas cap, though after hearing the pipes on my BA he has plans to change his pipes... it's just gonna cost him $$$ because his bike is EFI.

Anyway, TrOjAn, even though I'm a noob and think everyone should ride what makes them happy, I'm glad you're staying with the Speedie for a while longer.

So you think he should sell his cruiser and get a Bonneville SE? Meh, not a bad choice.

Ha!

Just pointing out that Triumph are better. I can't imagine an 883 beating out the BA/SM either in one of these comparisons.

If I were in the market for a new bike. I am thinking the SE would be the one.

The 883 is a small light bike. You would have to do the same to get what he has from a harley.
It would be nice if they made a big bore kit for ours that was a jug, head, pistons, and wrist pins. Instead of that bore and sleeve mess.

I still think this may be a cheaper way of getting what you are looking for.

989cc - 10.5:1 compression 92mm bore kit designed for all Triumph powered twins post 2001 for street application. This kit requires the following engine modifications and components:
BP 989 Piston kit
Barnett Clutch and Spring Kit
Bore & Sleeve factory Cylinders
BP MLS Gasket kit
Remove Crankshaft Counter Balancers
install Dynamically balanced Stroke Crankshaft 6mm
Carrillo Rods 989cc - stroker 88-94 hp 70 - 74 ft lbs.*

Not that what I say matters at all.

any ideas on what the bottom line is on getting this done?

Hey Bill! Don't laugh!!!

Word is if you're lookin' to purchase the world's best doo-rag, you can't do any better than to walk into your local Harley-Davidson Super Store!!!!

(...and while you're there, be sure to scope out their nifty line of hermetically sealed "custom" chrome parts which any owner of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle can use to "personalize" their ride and make it their own "unique" statement to the world!!!)

LOL Dwight, good stuff. all the guys i ride with are HD guys...one dude seriously just bought a new street glide to ride to sturgis (i'm not making this up...i will have to say i am jealous of the breakfast nook and fold out bed on the thing LOL) not one of them can smoke my 06 TBA, i'm re-jetted with sceptre pipes, and NH bell mouth intake (yeah i know there is controversy over the effectiveness of this) the best quote on here was from FriarJohn "i'll never get rid of my TBA" nor shall I. i love that bike, i love how it sounds, how it looks, how everything i have on it that wasn't suppose to fit was an utter PIA; but it made it mine...but the best thing i love, going to rallies and 20 people gawk around my bike; but pay no attention to the run of the mill, every runts got one HD's...yeah i want a storm, i probably will get one; but i will still be a TBA man forever... now about that 989cc kit.

Wow, I realize this is the TBA forum but there's some real single minded keyboard commandos at work in here. I think you should start a tunnel vision thread, where you can pat yourselves on the back all day for riding americas and argue about the best color. Me, I'll ride my speedie and my road king and enjoy them both.. I sure envy chopperpaul, wish I could afford a few more machines, especially a norton.
Well, maybe also a buell, and a sprint, and a guzzi, and I want the sporty back that I owned in 71, and on and on....Oh, and I do my own wrenching and maintenance and reliability are not issues for either one of my bikes.

I have a 06 Speedmaster and an old kawasaki kz1000. I love em both but the Speedy is my favourite.

Wish I could own as well a Norton and a Duke and a Honda and a Rocket and a BSA and a Thruxton and a... well I could go on and on.

Well Andy, a fellow came on here and announced he was leaving. Sounds to me like he wanted input, so we gave it. I just wanted to help him get the performance he was fishing for. That he wouldn't be able to get out of an 883 sporty. Most of these guys are very open to other bikes, however they are quite loyal to the Triumph band. For lots of reasons I might add. A lot of us have Harleys and most of us ride with Harley riders. Still we prefer our little speedies and Americas. If a fellow doesn't like our input...........Well I guess he shouldn't invoke it. All this to say this we like our friends here and will help in what ever way possible. You see his being happy matters the most, also you will notice that the guys here said. Even if you do trade bikes stick around you don't have to go. So lighten up and don't take this so seriously.............we don't.

Wow, well I'm certainly glad Andy lives in Seattle and not Butte Montana, or else I got me a feelin' we REALLY would've gotten an ear full here!!!!

(...yeah Andy, most of this thread was offered up in good sport, and many of the opinions expressed about The Motor Company are best taken with that proverbial "grain of salt"....except that doo-rag part o' mine...I really meant that!!!!!)

I can see Andy's point. There are comments in this thread that have nothing to do with performance specs between the two bikes. Granted there's a lot of kidding around, but the remarks that pepper the forum about HD being only for t-shirt and doo-rag sales to wannabe bad boys can wear thin pretty quick for folks that do like HD.

Oh, and btw, you might remember that I stated much earlier in this thread that I felt the ONLY all-around "performance upgrade"(overall power and handling) to be had by Terry would be IF he was considering selling his Triumph cruiser and getting an XR1200 instead.

(...and the last I heard, those XR1200s, a motorcycle that I wouldn't mind have sittin' in MY garage, can ONLY be purchased AT that local Harley-Davidson Super Store which I made reference to a little later in this friggin' thread..."Internet Commando" that I am!!!!!)

Meh. Chad pretty much nailed it (never thought I'd type THOSE words--I kid! I kid!).

This is a site for Triumph Americas and Speedmasters. Everything else is fair game. Hell, OUR bikes are fair game. But just consider that we are fans of these bikes, bikes that are for all intents and purposes the red-headed stepchild of the Triumph line. But we never turn anyone away for not owning one of these two bikes, so long as they play by the rules. Harley is the big dog, certainly of the cruiser market, and the vast majority of them thing their ******, or more accurately, their bike's ******, don't stink. It just ain't the case. And the VAST majority can't work on their own bikes and keep them running "trouble free." Nothing anyone has said here (no, I'm not going to reread everything to check) is inaccurate, only exaggerated for comic effect. For most of us it's a friendly rivalry.

So deal.
