Yeah, I read that, John... tough call that one although I lean towards the 10% discount. Doing that would continue to promote the goodwill nature this site is known for, by putting out the message of cooperation and mutual benefit. Of course it also means that anyone who saw the ad could just sign up here as a member, buy the product at a discount then never be seen again. Like I said... tough call.

Edit: Then again, business is business. Charging them keeps it simple and benefits us all.

Not something I'd purchase, although it's interesting. I think a monthly charge and like Keith said, keep it simple. The more complicated the more problems usually can arise.

Seems it's only 2 makes of lids they fit.So that will mean alot canot buy even if they wanted. But Free worldwide postage is fair for everyone on the site tho. But as Keith said maybe best to keep it simple. Might be better then,If anymore come along you can then follow suit. I think it is a good Idea to have small Product Related Advertising for the site. atb geoff

I just wanted to be clear.

I'm only talking about ads for the homepage, which is "only" 500-800 kits per day. But if I put banner ads on the forum to capitalize on that million hits per month, that's when I get greedy. Might need a "company bike" to ride to site events.

I would be skinned alive. However, maybe I could "sell my bike to the site" and use that money for a down payment.

John

Charge them the normal fee for this service.

If they want to offer some sort of discount to members, then that will be their marketing decision.

I'm fine with it john. taking a monthly fee seems like it would be complicated for you but maybe it would be a way to try it out. how would you know what to charge them? It doesn't seem like it could be very much: If they sold 10 extra thingies a month...

Oh jeez. Next you'll be having the Walrus and his boys build you one of their "corporate" creations.

What's wrong with both - a monthly advertising charge and a discount for orders linked to their website from this site (or mention BA.com with the order)? I think it's time this site joined the big leagues - on the home page that is.

I've been doing some reading and there are formulas for this sort of thing. It's like number of hits times size of ad times ad placement on the page. It's an inexact science at best.

Take the cash

If the advert is the same size as FastEddy's and that wierd web solutions one ( ), then I would think charging them around $10-$20 a month would be fair?

From what I've been reading that's pretty low. But they gotta pay something. We're not running a charity here (well, not for companies)

John, My opinion is to go with a monthly charge. The board could use it and that ensures the benefit is equally distributed to all of us. A 10% discount is no big deal on this particular product, and benefits only the buyer, even if its a "drive by" registration.

That being said, I am interested in the product. One of the common routes I drive is an east/west road and it can be brutal at times.

Hey John,
I would consider using this product if it was cheaper. At $36 to $50 I'll just use my sunglasses. Now if you need more money to maintain the web site Id be willing to pay an annual fee say $10 for membership. The VMC forum (Victory Motorcycle Club) charges $15. If people are apposed to a small membership fee, then some minor advertising on the home page wont be to bad. My 2 cents

Right now member donations are completely voluntary (and greatly appreciated). The basic site functionality will always be free as long as I'm running da show. Someday we might have a banner ad on the forum again (been holding off putting that back as long as possible), but a lot of sites have a "premium membership" where you pay a few bucks a year to not see ads. Of course with ad blockers this "feature" still ends up being voluntary. There is a metric assload of traffic on the forum; it's a shame to not capitalize on it a bit. But it would only be one ad like before. They wouldn't be all over the place like some sites (like TRat).

My thinking was if it was kept in the region of "petty cash", they would be highly unlikely to pull it, so it could run forever, or until the sun explodes whichever is sooner

But you know more about this than me (the finances, not the sun exploding)
