We had to put our 12 1/2 yr. old standard dachshund down this morning. Discovered a huge mass near her spleen and it was pushing her organs into the other side of her abdomen. She had been in a bit more discomfort each day and it was time. Due to her age and a few other problems she was not able to go through a surgery. Just survived breast cancer surgery about 2 yrs. ago.
Then this evening I sneezed and pulled my lower back. Am on the couch with hot packs, some Jack Daniels and a bit of hydra-codone. Needless to say am not going anywhere anytime soon. Glad I was on my bike today. Had to ride for a while after we put our dog down, you know destress.
Anyways just needed to whine for a little. Thanks for listening.

That is a tough day. A couple years ago my sweet St. Bernard, who was only 6 years old, developed bone cancer and hurt way too much to go on. It still hurts. I am so sorry.

I'm sorry about your Dachshund, Kathy. Putting your dog down is one of the hardest things to do. But if she was suffering it was the right decision. I also hope your back feels better tommorrow.

My heart goes out to you ... we love our pets too and can relate to your heartache. Sometimes I prefer animals to humans ... never been lied to by an animal. Go easy on the alcohol and medication cocktails or you really won't be going anywhere. Go natural medicine , hot pack and a massage. Jack's (spirits to lift your spirits) Hope you feel better soon.

You're so sweet guys and gals. Thanks I promise I'm going very easy on the "medication". After the hot packs come off my husband will massage my back, I'm so lucky!
I hear you on the animals vs. humans. I work with dogs every day and am the only employee. Works really good for me, I've been at it for over 13 yrs., now.

Oh! ... I know how hard it is to have to put your beloved dog down. The only sort-of 'cure' to that malaise that I have found is to get another puppy (and to have a big cry - but you didn't here that from me - OK?) Sorry to hear your health has compounded your sorrow.

I know how hard it is to do the right thing for them and purposely deprive yourself of future solace with your beloved pet. That's why I think foglefar is right (works for me most every time). Especially the grief outlet followed by a new little one to dote on... Quote:

I am sorry for your loss Kathy. At least she is out of pain now. Maybe a new pup would ease your grief.

We have her son who is 6 yrs and his niece who is 5 yrs., so I still have my furry support system. I got my female (the niece) as a puppy to help me through the loss of my 14 yr old cocker spaniel. Nothing better than my dogs and granddaughter to get kisses and hugs from.

Hope your back is feeling better today.

Sorry for your loss. It's a tough descision, but you know it's the right one. I've been dogless for nearly 10 years now, and I still miss him. I never got another one cause it would be unfair to keep one shut in all day while I was at work, but hopefully this new job will allow me to get home during the day, so who knows
Hope your back gets better soon

Kathy, Keep on keepin' on. The hardest day of my life, was when I had to put down my 16yo border collie "George". Had him since 16 weeks. I cried, Uncle Charlie

I know what you're going through. I had to put my wonderful Golden Retriever, Mason, down on the weekend. He made it to 9 years old before Mast Cell cancer took his life. He was one FINE dog!

Ice would be better for that lumbalgia Kathy. If you live close to Dr. Tim Joy DC he will take good care of you. Not sure what your location is in the beautiful pacific northwest. If I can be of remote assistance I do love helping people with back pain

My dach sleeps on my right shoulder each night. She'll be 10 this Fall, and had a broken leg and surgery to plate it back together maybe 8 or 9 years ago, and just this past year had another surgery for a 'crick' in her neck. I said "NO", but my wife did it anyway, and she's acted years younger since (the dog has, anyway). I try not to think much about it, but do know it hurts when the time comes. Hope you get better, and hope you live long enough to find another best friend like that, too. They are good for the soul.

What a beautiful dog! Don, you have my condolences also. I've shed a tear with you mate. I'm convinced they'll be the first to greet you on the other side.

I like to picture my past family members playing together waiting for the day I join them. If there are no dogs in heaven I don't want to go.

You said it perfectly. We believe they're waiting in heaven for us.
We still have her son and my other young girl, so it's not real quiet. Back is much better fortunately. Thanks guys and gals for the support and kind words, you're great!
