I don't know if I have mentioned it before, but my other passion as well as bikes is sailing. I spent many years on a racing yacht crew in Sydney. I raced in the Sydney to Hobart in 1987 and the Sydney to Coffs Harbour in 1988, as well as many other. In 2005 Jo & I decided to buy an ex race boat and convert her for cruising the Great Barrier Reef. After spending 12 months of hard work it was ready and we both retired from our jobs and set sail North on our 36 foot Sparkman & Stevens. So I thought I would share a few pics from our adventure. Captain Jo at the helm between Fraser Island and the mainland. [image] [/image] Sunset behind Fraser Island. [image] [/image] Loongana at full sail on the Whitsunday Islands. [image] [/image] The approaches to Airlie Beach. [image] [/image] The Red Baron landing among the anchored yachts in Horshoe Bay at Magnetic Island. [image] [/image] In Airlie Beach just before we handed her over to the new owners in 2009. [image] [/image] Hope you enjoyed the pics guys.

Thats awesome, I enjoy sailing too. I don't get to do it much, because I don't have a boat. I only get to go when a friend is going. Nice shots.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

That is just so friggin' awesome, Frank! I want to come up with something smartass about it being winter here and "thanks for rubbing it in" but I can't. There is nothing I like more than seeing my friends enjoying their well earned retirement and living life to the fullest. Good on ya man, and may there always be wind in your sails!!

You are quite welcome Keith anytime. Just don't come in Cyclone season.

I love sailing too! Great feeling to be on the water for an extended period.
Just haven't done much yet...
Always had a dream of building my own sailboat... maybe one of these days...
Thanks for sharing!

Very Nice Frank, A co-worker friend of mine from the vast central Montana prairie/grain country bought a 30' sailboat. Last time we talked, they were fixing up a small property off the Washington coast and are planning on retiring this coming summer for the good life, sailing, eating fresh seafood, watching sunsets jh

in 1974 myself and 8 other people sailed from ft lauderdale to jamaica on a 46'much like the one in your pics. the best time i have ever had on any boat of any kind. my wife dont like sailing but loves boats for fishing. so needles to say we have never owned a sailboat. but i will never forget the experience and how i felt one with the universe. so at peace with just the wind whipping the sails with no engine noise. thanks for the memories.
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

These are great pictures and have me looking forward to the summer for sure. Winter has been a little tough up here just south of the 45th parallel this year but the groundhog says its almost over. I just committed to a (summer) sailing trip off the coast of Maine and these pictures have began to stir the excitement. I've spent some time on the ocean, but never on a sail boat. How much different can it be without an engine? Thanks for posting!

Sailing is a lot different to what I refer to as "Stink Boats". All you can hear is the wind and the water, unless you have done it you will never know.
After I gave up racing it was something I always wanted to do, so we did it. It was something that if I had never done it I would have regretted it.
Being at anchor of different islands 60 klms. of the coast of Queensland for 2 to 3 weeks relaxing, fishing and listening to music, you can't beat it.
Being home now, no boat, my Speedy keeps me happy when I get itchy feet.

This thread reminds me of that bumper sticker I'm sure we've all seen, "I'd Rather Be Sailing".

With the weather we've had lately Keith, I will stay on dry (occasionally) land.
