Yeah, yeah, yeah, I am getting older, and I am tired of having to yell at Moe when he cannot hear me from beneath my k.a. full face. Any thoughts on a good safe option for less than $400!

Ooooo, this one would go great with my Cardinal Red mistress.
Seriously though Ryan, I've been interested in a modular helmet for a while now... I hope this thread catches on.

I had to go HJC CL-Max to find a modular big enough, but they're good helmets and I think they're under $200. If your head is smaller you have tons of options. HJC has a lighter modular, I think called the SY-Max.

Ha. We have yet to meet, so I will tell you that too big will not be a problem for me! Thanks.

I really like the new styles coming out with the removable chin bars instead of the rotating chin bars. Nolan was one of the first to do it properly with the N43. Nolan N43 I got a Sol SO-1 which is nicely priced, but I find it a bit noisy... not so bad since I usually wear earplugs anyway. SO-1 Looks like Caberg is coming out with a nice one too... HyperX

+1 Great helmet.
Your head is what will tell you. The Nolan lids are for big round heads. Just saying. (The nolan was not for me)

The Nolan I had was too noisy, even with wearing my earplugs. Just the ride from the Helmet Shop home was a migraine in the making. Took it back the next day for my first HJC modular. That first generation sucked. The second (and current) gen is much betterer.
I reiterate. Nolans are made for ROUND heads. I'm thinking wojo's noggin. Now John can argue that with me, only thing is it has to be in person at the SWTF! WOOOOOO joe where you going with that nolan on your head?

i have the sy-max2 the one with the sun shade built in. it's convienent because i go to work when it's dark out and light when i go home so i don't have to wear sunglases or deal with a tinted face shield. also they are great if you are going to take a long ride...easier to eat and drink as you ride.
If it isn't broke, I haven't messed with it.

I also have the HJC SY-MAX2, it's new and have only worn it on a couple rides but I really like it so far...it was right around $200. Though if the shop had that scorpion transformer helmet I might have bought that instead...it's pretty cool looking.

I also think the venting works very well on mine.I only experiance a bit of fogging til the helmet equalizes temps with the outside air.I have not ridden with mine in warm temps yet. I bought the irridium gold replacement lens as well and use that for even night riding as its not too dark but in conjunction with the inner shade it is even good for riding directly into the sun.BTW mine is the sy max 2 as well.

The Symax was discontinued several years ago and replaced by the Symax 2. I have a Symax, my second. Got a good deal when HJC discontinued the model.
I'm glad to see so many more modular helmets becoming available.

Sometimes when there's a thread about helmets, try leaving it alone so those smart enough to wear one can carry on constructively. Most of us take this topic quite seriously!
Back on topic... I found a site which provides reviews on quite a vast number of helmets. Scroll down to the 3rd section to see the list of modulars.

No, he's not the only one. I often get annoyed with off topic posts in topic-specific forums (read: not the lounge). Of course, sometimes I'm guilty of doing that myself, so I try to ignore it most of the time. And some subjects, for whatever reason, are a little touchy, like helmets.
This thread doesn't need to be "livened up." It's a very specific discussion:
"Any thoughts on a good safe option for less than $400!"
It wasn't, "should I wear a helmet?" or "What are the pluses and minuses?" or any other open question.

I guess all that "whip" non-sence was serious stuff about safety. I made a stupid joke, WOW! it was a HYPERBOLIC statment skull VS helmet as brain protection, and the ever infamous head rag that is so hated around here aka the "pirate look". Yea some of you guys ARE sensative about helmets. I am not. This was not an arguement. It was a joke in a thread that had other jokes in it. Followed by a laugh at a very funny retort. Thanks Smaug. Delete my joke, my laughy smiles to Smaugs retort and this statment please. You see Keith has some kind of problem with me. He never responds to anything I say unless he can find fault with it. Beit spelling, grammer, or he can find a reason to be offended by what I said. It dont really bother me except here because its a bit hypocritical. (the Whip thing is off topic and humorous A JOKE if you will). If you realy read what I wrote you can clearly see its a Joke. I tried to delete my little joke but the edit function is not there.

When I was looking for a replacement for my full face helmet, I also looked at modular helmets. My main reason for a full face helmet is for use when riding my Tiger (Ryan also has a Tiger). If anyone has ridden a Tiger they would know that a full face helmet is not an option, but a requirement (all the air hits you between your eyes and forehead). After looking for a while I came to the conclusion that a modular helmet wouldn't be the best choice due to several factors like noise, airflow & weight. I ended up getting a Shoei X-Eleven full face helmet, which at the time was rated best for noise, airflow, weight & aerodynamics. With that said I still have to wear ear plugs, because at 80MPH the wind noise is still very loud, and would have been unbearable with a modular helmet.

Yeah. I've been thinkin on this a lot lately anyway about this so called forum. I have been a member here for a little over a year now and mostly have found the place to full of a bunch of smart a$$e$,which is fine. Trouble is,joking around seems to only be tolerated by a treasured few,so I gotta say. ****** off BA .com. what small amount of info grudgingly given here can be had without all the ****** and whining anywhere else on the web. I've made a few acquantances here, maybe I will still see them around. Catch ya later Chad, your alright in my book.

hang around smaug man some of the guys here are alright man you are one of the white hats round here.
(White hats is cowboy for good guy) John is actually agood guy too. He is just uptight about the prospect of a helmet argument that has happened alot here. But as you read my little joke and understood so will most.

I guess I fail to understand the modulars. If ya want fullface protection I'd get a full face. If not I'd go 3/4 with a wind screen. I couldn't emagine riding with that bulk part of the face up.

Well first Chad, I've always found Modular helmets a little easier to get on and off than standard Full-Face helmets.(might be my big ears) And secondly, yeah you're right, the Modulars when the chin bar is flipped up usually do create air resistance at the top when you're riding at higher speeds. However, this is why I like the concept of that Shark Evo line, because the chin bar flips up and behind the helmet, so that it's much more aerodynamic when you'd like it to be a 3/4 open-face style. Oh, and for future reference here, the reason some folks like full-face helmets is because if they're riding at high speed on, say, an Interstate for long periods of time and without a windshield attached to their bike, a full-face helmet makes it much more pleasurable and far less tiring to do so. (...yep, in fact, YOU might even find that to be true IF you ever get over your little "aversion" or "fear" of not "lookin' cool/tough/manly enough" out there to others while you're ridin' around on your bike!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Well, that's okay Chad. Ya see, I got me a feelin' you're just gonna say somethin' like, "Ya know Dwight, wearin' a helmet could brake your nek"....or somethin' equally as stup...err...as uninformed!!!
(...and so ol' buddy, maybe we SHOULDN'T expand upon this idea here, and just go with somethin' like "You look much more "manly" and like "one tough hombre" when you're ridin' around without a helmet on"...OKAY?!)

btw Chad, the ONLY reason I'm yankin' your chain here is because...one of these here "Brain Buckets" actually saved MY life about 15 years ago after some kid in a beat up old Toyota unexpectedly pulled right in front of me while I was goin' about 35mph down the road, and my head hit the asphalt pretty darn hard! (...uh huh...well okay, there's THAT "reason", and the fact that I find great pleasure in yankin' the chains of MANY MANY folks about a plethora of things...and yeah, I KNOW what you're thinkin'...maybe hittin' my head on that asphalt at 35mph is the reason I'm "this way" TODAY!...well, you won't be the FIRST to posit THAT idea, ol' buddy!!!!
