Here at work, we used to have some jackasses jump over or cut a hole in the fence and vandalize cars, steal stereos, steal scrap metal and valuable transmissions, try to break into the shop, etc. several times per month. As soon as i brought my German Shepherd to live in the fenced back "yard", it ceased. He passed and i replaced him with the worlds friendliest pit bull. We haven't had an incident in more than 5 years! Dogs work!
On a side note, our experience has been that video is USELESS unless the perps have a name tag on and you can read it on the video. Seems the cops really don't care unless there is a lot of blood involved! I've actually heard them say "that's what insurance is for". Ugh!

I don't know about the dog thing... how can it discern between wanted, and UNWANTED thieves?

Doesn't have to. All thieves are unwanted!
Seriously though, there are no "wanted" visitors to our fenced in area, especially after business hours.

Some things you might like to think about apart from your actual barn security:
* Don't leave your prized possessions on display out the front of your property for all to see.
* Don't advertise the brand of your ride on the rear window of your pick-up.
* Coming back from a ride, check your mirrors to see if your pride and joy is being tail-gated so the low-life can check out where you live.
* Try to avoid licence plates in any pics you post on the internet.
* Quite often tip-offs are given unknowingly to low-lifes from tradies who may come to do work on your property. Be very careful about who you show your prized possessions to as they may well turn out to be spotters for your local low-life. (Apologies to all the good tradies out there)

share with me how you agree or disagree, i install a motion sensor, on the front of the garage, [theives would be trapped in the back yard]I drill a hole. thru to the inside and install a loud ****** alarm. Now this will keep the neighbors in their own yard i think.
When the alarm goes off............in the night[hopefully it won't[ the dog hears it all thru the house,i have a long house,She in turn barks wildy.[guaranteed] iget my 44 mag and start shootin at the truck they are loading up, 44 mags will destroy any car engine with one placed shot.

i write down the license plate number, and all the cops. Am i dreamin here?? all this is her idea. all but the rifle. can't hurt to try.

great ideas fellas.cept i would really like to shoot ones legs out from under him.

but the rifle is her idea.

I like the claymore idea but im sure you can get tripflares comercially. I think this might be a good idea as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D_3nAfmcqY&NR=1

It must be available in the USA because they sell them over here in a health and safety conscious Britain.

If you think of it then its a fairly simple bit of kit to fabricate as well.

I would imagine if you used that with a small electrical switch as well you could put an electric light on to go on at the same time.

Before the war on terror, if I saw an unattended package I used to think "I'll be having that!"

Trained attack crows. Black, loud, menacing, smart as a whip, and they fly in a straight line at the target. And you don't feel back when one of them dies.

If I ever got the chance I think I'd kill em & dump em where they could never be found. I'm sure we've all thought this scenario out at one time or another? Saves the cops a whole lot of paperwork and does away with repeat offenders.

no jus dump them in a pile in a central location, and paste a sign to their buts saying "this IS what will happen to you, if you don't learn from this offense.

On a lighter note, anyone know where i can get me AN ADT sign for my window? just to freakem out abit.I have seen them saying this property protected by ATD protection services.

I don't know what will work for ya. There are security alarm stores here but if they can tell noones home I don't konw that the alarm will matter. Dogs usualy do the trick if they are somewhat aggressive.
Now to offend Keith. One time over a year ago one of our niehbors caught some one trying to break onto another niehbors house. He got his gun out and started shooting the would be thiefs truck up. The thief managed to drive out of the community with out getting shot himself. We have had nomore incidents out here.
Its not realy practicle to sit and waite on some would be thief. Making things difficult is the only solution. Tamper proof locks, and fences. I am not a fan of dogs only because I dont have time to properly care for them. Tricky things like motion sensative lights and timers to turn things on and off along with cameras tend to be a good deterrent. Saddly though there is no cure, some people are just scum. You will have to look that stuff up online. We have security stores in Houston.

Motion detecting lights work - both outside and inside.

We had a break-in about 15 years ago and my wife had a novel idea. She brought home a target that she'd used at the local gun range - silhouette of man with 48 holes in it from her 38, then hung it in the glass of the service door. She missed twice, but who's counting. We got lots of comments from people stopping by and I like to think that potential criminals (or their scouts) gave it a second thought.

Funny thing about women shooters, they tend to aim a little "low".

land mines, boobie traps, deadfalls, killer bees, a bear of anykind, a mote with alligators, and a bunch of sticks with skulls on them. Also build a wall of stone but put as many bones as possible sticking out of it.

Speaking of feeding the bears and don't mean to hijack but there was a huge bear here that was almost a pet. This guy had been feeding him for years. The game warden told a couple guys about it and these scum went and killed it with arrows. Lots of people in the area are really ****** about it and the guy that was feeding him is devastated. Takes real scum to go kill an animal that is basicly tame.

A flock of geese is usually better than a dog or two.
They make a heck of a racket, are vicious and are less likely to get used to people.

Plus there is less chance of the cops coming round cos they've attacked someone (as far as I know there is no such thing as the Dangerous Geese Act)

You have got to keep their wings clipped though, but you also get big eggs for breakfast

That is so true, we had geese on the farm where I grew up, I'd rather tangle with a dog any day.

If the geese are like ducks at all, you wouldn't have any trouble getting them to come to roost at night, wherever you might choose for them to roost. Ducks train fairly easily.

As far as video cameras are concerned, don't bother unless you want to commit to some good high-end (high def?) equipment that might show more than just a "shadowy figure" if you did record something.. I know prices may be coming down, but you gotta believe there is still a lot of crap out there for sale, too. You might as well just mount some "dummy cams" if you go with less...

Stiffer penalties - deterrents, I like to call them, are the best policy. If the price is too steep, the risk too high....It used to be a felony offense to break into to someone's car here in Texas. And then our Legislature changed it to a misdemeanor. I see cars come in every week with broken windows because a purse, laptop, briefcase, etc., was left in site, in broad daylight even. Cut a hand off...or shoot'em in the act.

That kind of stuff, i have been aware of a lot of it,over the years. First thing man thinks of is "punish the animal" happens all the time.
These kinda guys,,,,ought to be made "public spectacle" of. That would. eliminate wasting good bullets, and they would never forget it. Shootin them would be my first answer, but thats to good for them.

Man has always been good, at venting their anger on the animals.

Theres guys!...... who just ain't got enuff sense; to "pour ****** out of a boot", my dad would say.

Haven't had any problems since my pet wolf moved in.

It probably helps that I am often seen out in the pasture shooting rabbits and such, and practicing bayonet training in the front yard.

I have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads. I'm the reason Dr. Evil's cycloptic colleague had to go with ill tempered, mutated sea bass.
