It's okay. People get emotional about animals. I have no idea what I'd do in the same situation. Of course, my dogs are old and slow and couldn't run at anybody.

The only thing I can say is if that cop was a ordinary citizen that happened to be carrying and shot a dog like that with people standing down range,in line of fire(at lease that is what it sounds like to me unless the dog had to run around a corner or opstical)he would be thrown in jail!!! The cops would ask him if he could of ran away or jumped in his car. Never mind the lives he put in jeopardy!!! Just like they expect you to do if someone breaks into your house, your suppose to exhaust ALL avenues before discharging your firearm!!!The cop didn't have pepper spray???? or a tazer??? Once, I was coming home (late at night) and there was a car stopped in the middle of the road. A dog was laying there, hit by a car, and the cops been called. when the cops got there they were going to shoot him to put him out of his misery right there in the middle of the road!!! I offered and did pick up the dog and moved him to the side of the road. One of the first things in gun safty coarses,is look beyond your target, Well back on topic, the cop had other means to end this conflict, his other cop buddies probably would of razzed him if he jumped in his car.

Dave this is Wendys dog and not one of mine that run loose. Lily is always on a chain ,leash , or in the house. She jerked out of my hands. My 2 pits don't run and listen, 3 deer in my back yard this morning and my dogs just watched em run off then finished doing their business and came in the house with me when I said it was time. Lily didn't listen once loose and stayed just out of reach so she was always on a chain. I don't want to turn this into a discussion I know what you think and you know my views. I twitch ever time I think of the shot and am still in shock from it. I think I may be permanantly traumatized. I want to undo the events of that day so badly. If she had not gotten out of my hands she probably would be alive today.
On a side note, the cop stated that he just fired, he didn't know where.

Sorry to hear it man. Wow cops........... give the useless a badge and a gun and thats what you get. A jack booted thug. Most of which are worse than the criminals they are supposed to protect society from. Notice I didn't say (us) I exclude myself because I don't need them. They run around shooting peoples pets and write speeding tickets for doing 5 over on a superslab. Thats a service I can do without.

Ian, I am VERY sorry for your loss and the trauma you and Wendy endure. As for the rest of us, I encourage only compassion and understanding towards our friend here. I think it's appropriate to set aside our views regarding cops and guns while we seriously consider the terrible heartfelt loss brought forward by this thread.
Live to love, love to live.

Tough Luck Ian. A tragic loss of your pet regardless of circumstance. Hopefully the new pooch will ease the loss.

That's cool Chad as I agree for the most part. I do know some good cops too though. This was mishandled and nothing can ever change or make it right, no amount of money or punishment will ever bring Lily back to me or my family. Porkchop is a God send. He is one of the smartest, well behaved dogs I have come across and is great with the grandkids. He has helped but as much as he is good there is no replacement for Lily, just a new family member to help comfort us.

I would like to introduce Porkchop. Great dog and wonderful with the Twins. He is probably about 10 lbs or so under weight but we will fatten him up in no time. His last owner abandoned him twice.
