In another thread Friar mentioned 'cabin fever'... a term used to describe the condition of (in our cases) NOT BEING ABLE TO RIDE DUE TO WINTER! And, well... I don't have TV and was thinking about signing up for one of those 'video on demand' services. And so I ask in this great community of super aware and informed people, is Netflix a viable option? Some other service perhaps? Your replies could help divert self inflicted harm which COULD possibly (but not likely) lead to the horrid stench of decay (we should avoid that, right Dan?), so chime in and safe a life, or at least what's left of my insanity... DOH, I mean sanity!

Netflix only has limited titles via instant play, youd most likely be waiting for DVDs. If your ok with that then I recommend Netflix.
Weve had it for a couple years and do enjoy it!

Netflix also has a new instant watch only plan that's pretty cheap. Lots of old TV series that would probably be right up Keith's alley.

Hulu.com is free, though even more limited in selection.

I use both. I think all I'm watching on Hulu these days is Fringe, Terriers and Sunny. Was watching Caprica (canceled) and Sons (delayed too long). I bought one show on iTunes, The Walking Dead. Outstanding.

Netflix is working well for us. I sh*tcanned cable about a year ago.Installed a rooftop antenna, picking up all networks in brilliant HD quality, best picture quality I've ever had. That includes, cable, Dish and Direct TV.Most people do not realize the networks broadcast all programming free over the air in digital and HD quality.
Joined up with Netflix about 6 months ago at their lowest rate. One DVD mailed to me at a time, this includes BlueRay.
But in addition of the mailing you get unlimited instant play on your TV and pc, laptop etc.Mailing of the dvd's are extremely fast, one or two days.
I think it's a great deal

Keith,

OT literal/littoral translation: Does the cabin have a fever, or the cabin's inhabitants? Heck I'm happy having indoor plumbing & incandescent light bulbs, plus a dialup connection of course

New things: I'm off to learn first-hand about so-called enhanced security measures at the Spokane airport

....and good luck with the netflix adventure. Now if you were to mount a Ipod/blackberry device on your handlebars you'd really have sumpin'

I found that out too, but then was asked if I wanted to be redirected to "If I Can Dream." I did that and it looks like an offshoot of Hulu and does have a bunch of stuff to check out.

Hi Keith....you need a young person around the house. My Son turned me on to isohunt.... http://isohunt.com/ where you can find any TV episode and start a down loading process. I've got all of the Sons of Anarchy episodes locked away on my back up system. Then you need utorrent.... http://www.utorrent.com/ to complete the down load to your hard drive. Just started down loading The Walking Dead that John mentioned. Pm me if you want to try this way of doing things.

Kieth,

I dont have cable, just over the air tv. When I want to watch episodes that aren't over the air, I go to this site: www.casttv.com Its an aggregator of various video on the web. Its very well organized, easy to use and is a good source. Often I could find the episodes I wanted to see within an hour after they were broadcast, but would have problems maintaining a stable stream. Because of that, I settled for typically watching Sons of Anarchy next day. Hopefully its not blocked in Canada. Because its an aggregator, it is pointing you at various other sites. Some are pay, some are free. For example, Walking Dead is now all pay, but was free earlier. Same for Sons of Anarchy, but I watched every episode the day after broadcast, free.

Probably because it isnt. It works over the internet, which you need a high speed connection like comcast, verizon, clear and the like.

We have Netflix, I like it. We have the plan with getting DVDs and instant watch. We use the instant watch mostly on our Blu Ray player. Netflix is suppose to be coming out with an app in January to watch movies instantly on Droid devices.

HULU limits access to US IP addresses due to IP issues.

Like Soren said, you need a stable high speed connection for netflix. Streaming an SD movie is going to require at minimum a 1.5mb/sec connection and a typical SD movie is @ 1.8 Gig of data. If you have cable broadband you should be fine speedwise, but check your caps. If you have dsl, definitely try the free trial first to see if you can maintain a stable stream. If you are like me and are using a wireless connection like Verizon, Sprint or Clearwire, dont even think about it. You will wind up speed capped, or paying huge overages.

We finally had to replace our aging 32" CRT tv. Also got a Sony wireless Blu-Ray player. The Sony has Netflix installed and it works beautifully. I'm very impressed with the picture and digital sounds (7.1 receiver, but only using 5.1 components). I'm using the wireless thru my local cable company/modem. Seems to work fine for me. So well in fact, I've mostly been watching "play it now" movies but still get one DVD delivered per month. I have about a dozen titles loaded in my que now.

I'll have to check out the links listed above. I streamed the NFL.com game this evening, we don't get that channel on our basic cable.

I agree with FJ on "The Walking Dead", it's a great show (if you enjoy zombie flicks). There's even an old Triumph chopper that pops up in quite a few scenes, owned of course by one of the bad guys.....

We've had Netflix for a couple of years, and I like it. We get the 2 DVD's plus streaming. I like it. Of course as much as we spend is still less then we spent in late fees at the video store.

Blockbuster has streaming movies too. Looks like the prices are the about the same as Netflix. I cant get it on my blu-ray player.

When we signed up for NetFlix, we did cancel our movies channels on cable. Saved us few bucks each month and we definitley arent missing out on anything.

Keith, yeah Hulu is blocked in Canada but I've been thinking about Netflix myself. For here it's a streaming only service but I'm not sure on the selection. Keep us posted on if you decide on it I'd like to know what you think.

John, I'll let you know about Netflix Canada for sure once I try it out. I figure I might as well go for their 1st month free offer just to see. I'm just trying to figure out if this is the best time of year to use up the one month free trial, what with Holiday distractions and all. But yup, I'll keep ya posted!

Ok I gotta ask, Keith. When you say you don't have tv you mean you don't have cable or dish etc right. Not actually you don't have a tv. Because I hate to tell you buddy but when you start getting Netflix videos I think you're gonna be a little disappointed if you don't have a tv set o used to have apple tv that has tv shows and movies that download and you cam watch them. Pretty cool but you have to have it hooked up to the Internet and may have to be wifi. Mine was but don't know if it has to be. Then you can play your iTunes library from your computer to your living room speakers. just another option. Hey one more question. Do you guys watch a lot of the Red Green Show up there? Keep your stick on the ice Spring will be here soon...

O yeah, Brett... I have a television. In fact, my computer's video is connected to my TV and audio is piped through my home stereo. So all I have to do is fire up a video on the PC, then hit the couch!!! It's a sweeeeeeet setup for sure!!

Incidentally... it appears Netflix Canada does not send out DVD's. Streaming only from what I can gather for now. Oh, and as for Red Green... LOVE IT!!! Trailer Park Boys too!!!!!

We are setup with Netflix same as you Keith. i really like it. Been a good deal even with our DSL connection. But we are only a few hundred yards from the telephone switch so we get blazing speeds for dsl, close to cable net speeds.
We can watch on the laptop, the home puters and the widget TV at the same time and onlu ocassionally get the buffering issues.
I say go for it, at the US$9 a month it isn't a bad deal at all.
And for us serious junkies, we are able to watch our actual Dish receivers over the net using a sling box. Cool! I can watch my dvr'd Sons from nywhere in the world with a wifi connection, like airports especially when waiting hours for flights.
(yea, I now, I need a life.)

Thanks for the Crackle link, Steven. The quality looks good there, Al. I didn't sign up or register but just clicked on a movie at random just to see if it would work. The movie came to life within seconds with excellent picture quality. I didn't have time to thoroughly check it out but so far so good.

My daughter has Netflix via her Wii, it works fine but sure messed up our Vonage phone account! The Vonage guy said the Wii searching for updates on a network is a big problem for them.
