After going for a ride in temperatures in the 30c range yesterday,(sorry Keith & Greg) today I thought I had better do some work around the home.

Jo and I own 5 acres in Southeast Queensland and after all the recent rain we have grass that would hide an elephant. So her who must be obeyed suggested that I spend a few hours on the ride-on mower and tidy up a few of the paddocks.

Well, nice day for a ride, but I thought I had better play it safe and cut the jungle. Half way through the first 1 acre paddock I get a flat tyre. Tubeless tyre no problem so off to my workshop. Open up the side door get the mower half way in to repair the tyre. Down on my hands knees trying to find the hole and I start to feel things crawling up my legs. Then the pain started, during the recent rain a colony of meat ants had decided to build a nest next to the door of my workshop. That was where the pain was from, meat ants chewing on my legs. So after running to the nearest hose and cleaning them off my legs, here is the question.

How do you kill an ants nest.

Please guys no suggestions of TNT, Dynamite or C4, I would like a tried and tested method.

Any suggestions.

I know there are probably many ways suggested on the Internet, but I would like a tried and proven way of doing it. [image][/image]

Well, my grandmother always used the anti-environmental way she grew up with. She poured gasoline strait into the hole of the ants nest, usually took about a gallon. It's worked for me too, athough I'm talking about the ground variety here and your's might be a different kind.

They're not carpenter ants 'cause I don't see a pencil behind their ears!!

Termidor. Wipes out entire colony of termites or ants. If its available down under treat your home and shop areas. Any ant hills out in your yard just spray it directly on them. For your house dig a trench 4-6 in. deep by 2-4 in. wide and saturate with solution. Check with domyownpestcontrol.com for all the details. There is no chemical smell and it lasts for years. Environmentally safe I think. Check it out. You'll be glad you did.

Meat Ants!!!! They sound bad. We get these blue ones that sting like crazy. If there is a way to get rid of them I am all ears. They make gardening here almost impossible if they are active. The venom in their bites just burns all night. Meat ants sound worse.

If they were regular ants you can shoot some borax where ever they are with a turkey baster. Ants will carry that back to the nest and it kills them all. Same borax that used to be sold as hand cleaner and is also used as flux for brazing. Don't know if this method would apply to meat ants.

I found something on the net that supports Ian's borax idea.

Method One:

1. Mix 1 cup of borax and 1 cup of white sugar together. Be sure to wear gloves when mixing the ingredients to protect your skin.

2. Divide the mixture between four separate glass jars.

3. Crumble up some toilet paper and add it to each jar.

4. Add water to the jars until the jars are filled 1 inch from the top of the jar.

5. Place the lids onto the jars and punch five or six holes into the lids using a hammer and a nail.

6. Place the jars where you are seeing a concentration of the ants. The ants will be attracted by the sweetness in the jars and enter them. Then they will either drown in the liquid or be killed by the borax.

Method Two: Dish Detergent

1. Fill a spray bottle with 2 cups of tap water.

2. Add 1 tsp. liquid dish detergent.

3. Replace the lid and mix gently to combine. Do not over shake or the bottle will fill with sudsy bubbles.

4. Spray ants you see with the soap mixture. The soapy water will kill the ants that are sprayed. It will also cover the scent trail they leave behind for the rest of the colony to follow.

If you are looking for an environmentally friendly method use Corn Meal or Corn Grits. Sprinkle around the mound not on the mound. Disturbing the mound can make them move to another location.
The ants eat the corn startch or meal and then when they ingest water they swell up and die.

Borax works great, my dad used it.

Best method, Gasoline!

Best of luck!

+1 on Borax (sodium salt of boric acid.)

pour 5 yards of concrete into the hole. Really I live in Texas and here ants rule the roost.Tthere just isn't much that works. Most things just cause them to move, and attack from a new rallying point.

We have fire ants here in Arkansas, and the colonies are multi-queen. In order to kill a colony of ants, you have to kill the queen, which - like bees - is the only ant in the colony capable of reproducing.

I don't know anything about meat ants, but they sound unpleasant. If they are anything like fire ants, then get rid of them before they have any chance to expand into other colonies or migrate.

You seem to have more than your fair share of viscious wildlife and insects down there. Perhaps you should take a page from our playbook here in the US of A and just kill everything you see...

Wow, I'm kind'a shocked here! I would've bet that you would've told Frank to do somethin' like the following, Mr. Goldberg:

First, build yourself a long ramp which will be for the bowling ball that'll run down that ramp, which when it gets to the bottom of that ramp will trigger a mousetrap that'll spring and trip a wire that hits a light switch, which will then turn on a 100W light bulb that'll then....well....you get the idea here, right?!

I mean, you ARE the master of these kind'a "solutions" to certain problems in life, aren't cha???!!!

(...actually Frank, yep, the Borax route works pretty well around here in AZ...but then again, you've got yourself a whole lot o' really different and strange little critters down there, so who knows for sure if this'll work for you TOO, eh?!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Borax, boric acid. Just be sure that you spread it around a bit, otherwise it will just make the nest uninhabitable and they will just move a bit. You want to kill them.

Yes, boric acid, most roach and ant powders are nothing but powdered sugar and boric acid. The boric acid gets on the insects legs and antenna, when they clean themselves they ingest the acid which eats out their guts.

A queen ant is not the only ant capable of reproduction in a colony. When a queen dies the handmaiden ants, the ones that take care of the queens needs, can hormonally change and become the queen. Of course there is more than one handmaiden ant, they fight it out for domination. If they kill each other all bets are off.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Boric acid seems the way to go for a start.

I am going into town on Friday I will pick some up after I have picked up my new bike lift.

Somebody sent me a link about ants eating cane toads. I wish they did, we kill cane toads everyday on our property. Caustic soda works every time.

I would like to see the ant that can eat one of these.

The problem is, the cane toads stay away from the ant nests.

Our largest cane toads are about as big as the palm of your hand.

We generally kill about 10 cane toads a day and more keep coming.

We generally kill them with a spray bottle of disinfectant. If we find where they hide during the day we pour a caustic soda solution on them.
