I met a guy from the UK a few years back that did just that Keith. He custom built a trike around a VW beetle engine and transaxle. He bought those new and fabricated the rest. He didn't cut up and old bug. The back had all he needed to live on the road including a shower with hot water. He wrapped copper tubing around the exhaust headers and pumped the water through them.. He had a homemade Earls front end with the same bolt pattern and wheel as the 2 rear drive wheels so the spare fit any wheel that could go flat. It was a really cool contraption. He stayed with my friend for a couple weeks before moving on. He was riding around the world. He seemed kind of nieve so we were thinking he might not make it through central and south America. I wonder from time to time what happened to him and if he made it.
Another cool story there Ian. The copper water pipes wrapped around the headers... wow, serious stuff!! But what pray tell, what did the guy use for water softeners?
Live to love, love to live.

Back when we had a sales tax license, we opened accounts at the places where plumbers & electricians buy their stuff. The wholesale suppliers did not care that we were in the trucking business.
My brother and I did a quoted at $12,000* oil/hot air furnace job for around $4,000. Local law only required the oil supply lines and electric be hooked up by licensed pros. The work we did was far easier technically than doing a Hinckley valve adjustment. Sure is nice to get everything wholesale.
If you're set up for sales tax, then...

*The markup on furnace jobs around here is sky high. The only thing I can figure is the installer must own it for life with regard to liability issues and insurance costs? Dunno.

Here's additional information for those of you who actually know something about this topic and tried to help... (oh, snap) I got my water test back and I'm at a whopping 11.6 grains. What's the threshold? Seems like a pretty low number from what I've read. I'm about to the point where I'm just going to bag the water softening for now and just see how often the tankless water heater needs servicing. If it's particularly annoying, say every few months, maybe I'll revisit the water softener issue. And my buddy Gene is getting about double the grains I am but he's on a well. He's likely to get one of these voodoo non-salt machines so I'll see how well it works on his water.

Not really. I usually stay in hotels and they're all softened to the max. I stayed with my cousin a few years ago in Henderson and I think hers was softened too. Probably haven't touched non-softened Vegas water since 1984, when my grandmother retired and we moved her to Montana.

Well, it's considered very hard. I had a house where we didn't soften and the appliances and plumbing fixtures lived very short lives.

Found this scale:
0 - 75 ppm (0-4 grains) is considered soft.
75 - 150 ppm (4-9 grains) is moderately hard.
150 – 300 ppm (9-18 grains) is hard.
300 ppm (18 grains) and up is very hard.

One thing I can add is that acidity cancels out the hardness to a certain extent but again appliances live very short lives. I have both very hard water and very acidic water. I have no hard water issues not even stains due to the acidity. My hot water heater fails about every 4 to 5 years and the elements in less time. It also kills coffee makers.I have electric tank type heater so not sure how much that would effect a tankless. My water is not treated because to fix the acidity I need a system that the hard water would constantly clog and would cost me a small fortune to maintain. My water is off the scale hard if I let it stand it will turn orange after a short time and then leave a deposit on the container. Before that it is crystal clear and no actual particulates. I had it tested several times and they all say to leave it alone and it is safe to drink as long as the iron doesn't bother my stomach.don't know how much any of that applies to you but that is my experience with hard water.

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread just for rosco. Nothing about water softeners but it turns out it's a code violation to put a water heater of any kind in the crawlspace. So it will probably have to go in the new pantry I'm building.

Hum. Might want to consider placing it in a location where in the future if you want to go back to a tank, the plumbing will be in a location where a tank could be installed.

Yeah, the pantry will be able to be a pantry, or a space for a side-by-side clothes dryer, or a tank water heater (next to a stacked W/D).

Hey, newbie, this is THE LOUNGE. It's for general discussion within the bounds of the Acceptable Use Policy. I think the vast majority of people don't find water softeners political, religious or otherwise offensive.
Well, I'm not so sure about that, John!
(...'cause it seems to me if God wanted you folks up there in Montana to have softer water, then He would've given you folks that stuff in the first place, right???!!!)
