....a beautiful day here in massachusetts yesterday and the 03 america wouldn't fire on the right side - no spark....same thing happened once last year, but after an hour of rest it ran and continued to work for the rest of the summer...haven't pulled the tank off yet; just got as far as reaching up and checking all connections on the right coil.....any thoughts?

search all of the other 'no fire on right side' posts.
swap the right and left coils, check the battery cables, check the main ground strap. If it doesn't go away or move to the left, then it might be time to look at an ignitor (refer to many ignitor threads)

Forgive my off topic, but,

Sure would like to see a dyno on that

...it's hard for me to think the problem is a coil....seems to me that a coil would either be a complete circuit or not....I really don't see how its output could go from 0 to back again.....

Bucky, Performance Mods, Dyno Results Table, Page 4 has Mag10's dyno run......pretty impressive. 80hp

Michael, sorry for the off-topic conversation....coils can become intermittent. Not likely but they can. The more likely is a dicey connection to the coil hot or ground leads.
Spark plug wires should be checked too.

I had a bum coil that only misfired at certain throttle positions... Load sensitive! Don't rule it out yet.

....started and ran perfectly again this morning.....first warm day I'll take the tank off and clean and lube all of the low voltage connections....this bike never liked being wet - in fact, it's always had me afraid of washing it at the beginning of a nice day....when it loses spark, it often takes an overnight rest before it cares to run again....

Mine acted exactly the same way when my igniter was dying. Be prepared.

I think there might be a Procom igniter in my future....any feedback about how they run "right out of the box".....I ask this because I've always used a mac and have no experience with pc's

Mine was the same

Initially if I used it every day, it ran fine, but only started on the left cylinder if it had stood for a couple of days (irrespective of the weather).
Then it started cutting onto the left cylinder at odd times when I was riding.
I suspect it's the heat generated by the engine affecting the right hand cylinder in the CDI (maybe that circuit is located at the bottom of the box?) which is why it becomes difficult to start when cold but then cuts in when the engine reaches a certain heat
Just bought a procomm and it's much better - and I'm running it straight out of the box.
I'm seriously thinking about relocating it under the seat to try to prevent it happening again

I agree about the location Steve.
The only place Triumph could have put it that would be worse would be if they mounted it directly to the engine.
Heat has always been the enemy of electronics so a relo may be the answer.

And that would be a GREAT harness for aftermarket vendors to jump all over. A male/female plugged harness long enough to re-position the CDI under the saddle or where the consensus of opinions prefers.

That way no hunting for plugs, no tedious wiring just send 50 bucks to Brent, Eddy, Mike, or whomever wants to take this by the horns and rassle it to fruition.

Does anyone know where I could pick up the male / female plugs from (preferably in the UK)?

Other than that it'll have to be cut & splice

Might be worth shooting Pieman a PM, I know he reprograms the cdi units so may have a plug and / or an idea of where to get them.

You might want to inspect the igniter. Check for any cracks at the seams. If you find any cracks this is were moister will enter the unit, which can cause the problems you are experiencing. A temporary fix is to allow the unit to completely dry out and then seal it with RTV.

Igniter, CDI, ECU, Brain, whatever; it's the electronic hickey-do that controls the spark.

I'm wondering after reading this about the effectiveness of a home made heat shield or perhaps a layer of aluminized insulation of some sort applied to the bottom of the CDI,. as a preventative measure. I'd be willing to use a preterminated extension harness to relocate the box if one were to become available.

......thanx, Tom......I believe I'll do this as soon as it warms up here in massachusetts - maybe tomorrow,

If you use any RTV around electrical components, be sure that it's approved for that use.
Regular RTV emits acetic acid (that vinegary smell) as it cures and can cause serious problems (corrosion) of electrical items. Especially in electronic applications where tiny amounts of amperage and millivolts are involved; perfect connections are critical.

......think I might be in luck....yesterday the bike started left cylinder only...I took off the seat and tank and carefully unplugged the igniter....I tried my best not to disturb the igniter in removing the plug, since I wanted to see if simply moving the connection would help....it started right up on both cylinders....didn't have anything but grease to waterproof the connection, so I just smeared a little bit over the face of the plug at the end of the harness....it's been running perfectly, ever since.

The plug on the ignitor is a sealed unit. No need for grease on the connection.

Die-electric grease on the connections and grounds, spark plug wires does make a difference.I was worried this past year about a similar problem.Cleaned up the fuses and connections.Used die-electric grease on everything taken apart and have not had the problem since.I got lucky I guess. What does the procom igniter run and where do you find it? For future reference if needed.

....if I'd known that procom was so fast, I'd have left the tank off.....ordered it thursday and it just arrived....set it to position 4 (matching the part number of my triumph part) and it started right up!.....it seems to pull a bit harder at wide open throttle, but is a bit lean in the middle....this might be a bit annoying in traffic....I guess I should wait for a warmer day and judge it then....
