Different starting with the procom imho.
fuel on choke in
Turn key on engage starter while starter is spinning motor, pull choke out 1/2 to 3/4 way.
No go?
Repeat from choke in point

I have been really suprised at these hard starting reports. I have never had this problem. I start with full choke, fires right up, just like normal. I will add, though, I never used the baseline Procom ignition map, I used my alternate one from the beginning. What map are you using?

Getting back to the thread, I am thinking now that if I start the ramp up from 1000 rpm instead of from zero that may?? help the starting, I will reprogram Sunday and check out the starting. My thinking is this: as the bike turns over at x rpm the CDI unit is advancing the ignition while its trying to start (needs retarding). Anyway, Ill try and post back.. we need to nail this bad / non starting issue asap This is the next one I will be trying.

Terry,
Could you post the stock profile?
I'm confused with the chart. Is it showing a maximum advance of just over 3 degrees at 5000 rpm? Seems low?

Yes BrianT is correct.. HOWEVER!!!
The real pain in the butt is, whats stock?
According to Procom the Stock Map is the same as the default Triumph one.
Gregger, I have to admit timing is major bug bear of mine... wish everything started as ZERO then we could work from that, anyway, the NEW maps I have have a larger advance and are completly different to what we have been playing with..
It appears to em that these small 3 degree advances are our "lets tweak but be careful" approach.
I have sent the maps to about 10 people so between us we should be able to narrow down a decent map.

Is there some way that the built in advance from Procom can be mapped?? On "older" cars you just point your timing light on a degreed balancer or have a "dial back" timing light. Is there some place to put a degree wheel on? or have/make an inspection hole in the side cover? Does Procom hold their timing advance as "TOP SECRET"? Can BA.Com ask them?(strength in numbers) I know, more questions, no answers, so sorry.

Which map do you have uploaded currently? From a reply to Matt, here are some notes on the new maps---> Procom released 9 new maps. Beginning Rider MapsMedium-level Riders Maps Advanced Riders MapsEach skill level has three maps. A map for a bone stock machine. A map for a machine with Minor modifications. Lastly a map for a machine with General modifications.

Well I contacted Procom. I was instructed to set the ecu to #4. The bike now starts but wont run right. I used the map downloads, and tried different ones. They dont seem to make much difference.Lots of backfiring. I had the bike in the shop last year for this problem and after almost $400.00 they told me the prob seems to be the ecu.I didnt have them put one in because Triumph gets more that $600.00!! I am beginning to think they misdiagnosed the prob in the first place

Backfiring doesn't necessarily mean the CDI unit. It might but there are a lot of other items that should be checked first before putting out that kind of money. Have you done anything to the bike in terms of modifications? Have you checked the intake system rubbers and vacuum caps closely for cracks? Do you have your idle mixture adjustments screws set properly (turned too far in will give you backfiring)? When were the carbs balanced last? Have you checked your spark plug colour?
When does it backfire? While idling, steady running, accelerating, decelerating? Makes a difference in diagnosing.

The bike has aftermarket pipes and has been re-jetted. When it was in the shop they also eliminated the air injecton parts. After I bought the bike I put about 4500 miles on it, trouble free.I tried everyones suggestions on here before I finally gave up and took it to the dealer.I can only assume that they checked all the obvious things, but I dont know for sure.

I bet somebody here can help straighten it out for you. It might take a week or three of trial and error & posting, but there are some very mechanically talented folk here.

Don, I just re-read these two threads. Dang man. Troubleshooting April 06, 2009pulling my hair out April 14, 2009 glaringly... Quote:
I wonder if anyone can help me with a troubleshooting question. I have an 05 America that started running crappy last fall before i put it away for the winter. It started out as a hesitation when you give it the throttle. It has gotten progressively worse and now backfires as well. I checked the plugs and air filter. Also ran carb cleaner through it. Cant figure it out. Any help is appreciated. thanks,Don
That really sounds like a bad coil. not coils. So, given all you have done since almost a YEAR ago, have you tried installing a new or at least a known good used ignition coil?
AND it wouldn't hurt to pull and clean the carbs, including the diaphram side of things.
Fuel or lectrics... The timing light trick tells ya lectric. a test for fuel problems: when the symtoms exhibit, pull the choke out. If they go away odds are ya got a fuel issue.
BadCoil. Again, have you tried installing a new or at least a known good used ignition coil? One should be all you need. If after install the symtoms are still present, install the coil on the other side. ALSO check your plug wire(s). Simple ohm check on those. There are checks using a meter on the coils. The primary side is explained in Haynes. Maybe some of the members here that are more versed in electron flow can chime in.
Hang in there. Lets see if we can get you hooked up with a member local to you so you can troubleshoot a possible coil issue.

OK 2 things here... you say your on #4 on the cdi unit?? might want to double check that (post your original part no)
2nd, I would go with coil.. the reason I say that is I have had it happen twice now and I went through EVERYTHING!! even bought 2 replacement carbs, checked the shims, the air gap the lot.. you name it I did it.. bought 2 2nd hand coils and it ran like a dream.
2 weeks ago, got the same issue, this time swapped out the coil for a spare I had, running like a dream.
I have now in my possesion 3 PVL coils, they are slightly larger but as I now had had 2 right hand coils go on me I am trying anything.. when I locate a dealer that has the nology coils in stock Ill get them.
Good luck

The number on the Triumph ecu looks like 1291100. The label is worn and the numbers are hard to read. The tech support guy told me to use setting # 4 based on that number. I havent tried another coil myself but the shop said they tested it. I dont have much faith in the Triumph dealer here.

You can test the coils with an ohmmeter also. Check positive to negative on the primary side. Should be relatively low values. Probably just a few ohms. Then test from the positive or negative to the main secondary output. Should be several thousand ohms. Compare the values between the coils.
Note, this is not a perfect test since the resistance value on the secondary side could break down with the high voltages. A megger would be the proper device to check the secondary side but this isn't something most fellows own.

imho the ohm check will not reveal an intermittent failure. for what ever reason the coils seems to fall in and out of grace, every so much further, over time, into hades.
from the haynes manual (PURCHASE ONE), Chapter 4,
"10. the coils can be tested in situ. Pull the cap off the spark plug for the coil being tested.
11. Measure the primary circuit resistance with an ohmmeter or multimeter as follows:
Disconnect the primary circuit wiring connectors, noting which fits where—the red wire goes to the positive (+) terminal on the coil. Set the meter to the ohms x 1 scale and measure the resistance between the terminals on the coil. If the reading obtained is not within the range shown in the Specification, it is possible that the coil is defective. Primary winding resistance ………approx. 6 ohms @20degreesC
12. Measure the secondary circuit resistance with a multimeter as follows:
Set the meter to the K-ohm scale. Connect the positive (+) meter probe to the contact in the spark plug and the negative (-) probe to the primary circuit terminal for the red wire. If the reading obtained is not within the range shown in the Specification, it is possible that the coil is defective. . Secondary winding resistance ………approx. 15 K- ohms @20degreesC
13. Before buying a new coil, pull the HT lead out of its socket on the coil and measure the resistance of the lead and cap by connecting the meter probes between the HT lead end and the spark plug socket in the cap. .If the reading is not as specified, replace the spark plug cap with a new one.
If the coil is still suspect, substitute it with one that is known to be good before condemning it. If the problem still exists, then the fault is probably in the primary wiring circuit see chapter 8. Spark plug gap resistance……approx. 5 K- ohms @20degreesC
Notice the words used when coil meter readings are outside the specs: IT IS POSSIBLE THAT Whereas for a spark plug wire outside the specs: REPLACE

Yep, I have 2 Gil coils here that pass the dreaded Ohm check but they are fubar, run ok at over 3000 rpm but below it misfire like a nutter.
Get a 2nd hand coil and try it...
As for PVL are same as Nology?? are you sure? they may look the same but 2 different companies.. would be very surprised if they are identical.

Try map No: 9, its the most advanced / modified apparently.
I am running No: 6 atm but will try No: 9 later.. No: 3 was really nice, No: 6 is different, wont say better, so looking forward to trying 9.
Report back on your findings.. remember its harder to start usiung the procom
