Let the beating begin! I don't want to but I am in the position where a trailer has become a necessity. My criteria is: 8'x5' (enough for one bike?) $1200-1500 Enclosed 12-15†tires Ramp door Any suggestions?

Where are you going to fit all the furniture in a trailer that small? Seems like you'd need a bathroom and kitchen too. Why not just get a double wide and go the WHOLE route in playing the role??? We got us some real good deals on re-poed double wides right down heayah in Ar-Kan-Saw...

Aw, you guys are killing me! No harleys for me, thank you very much. We are now the proud owners of a condo up in Banner Elk, NC. It's about 850 miles from here to there. I have no problem riding that but my wife will not ride on the back for that long, period (I envy youse guys that have wives that will ride with you). There is NO way I am going to the mountains and NOT take Raven with me. As I said in the GA rally thread, I really have limited options. 1. I can ride up and the wife can follow with a cage (however, this has already been nixed with "I'm not driving all that way alone......") 2. Get a trailer

Holy Buckets, what have I known you for 10-15 years now!!! I'm stunned, beyond words. "Hello, my name is Phil and I own a motorcycle trailer" Seriously I'll be seeing a guy this evening that has a very nice enclosed trailer (yes, he owns HD's), I'll ask him about it, can't remember the name off-hand. I need to go think this over.... John (just bustin' on ya)

Or 3. Get a second Triumph and leave it at the condo.
Edit..oh, and if it helps. Tell your wife, its a present for her.

Shaun, forgot to mention that she is scared of mountain roads in a car, never mind on a bike. Gets motion sickness at the drop of a hat. This is a no-win situation for me I am afraid. However, I love her to death so I will do what I have to to get her to at least come along. Oh, forgot to mention that too! She will be at the GA Rally with me this year!!! I figure she and any other non-riding ladies can all go spend money down in Dahlonega!

Watch the classifides, ebay, etc. Young musicians, landscapers, or people with short attention spans get these things and sell them cheap when their life changes direction. Buddy of mine got one almost new for $800. I would love to bring my bike to work (have to have truck for work) and do my daily running around on my bike.

If you do go the trailor route, get a double wide so the in-laws can stay in it when they visit.
Seriuosly,. go for the enclosed of you're gonna do it. Do it right, you will never be sorry for spending the extra money. Besides, you can afford a second vacation home you can afford an enclosed trailer, or just get a second bike and leave it there. Saves gas, time and money.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Sounds to me like an enviable hard spot to be in. Have new condo, have house, have bike, have wife, how to tie the four together? Did you imagine when you were just starting out how rough life would be? TR

Youse guys are the best (and the worst!) and I appreciate all the responses and am laughing with some! Divorce - I'm not touching that one either!! Never thought about the classifieds... now I want to see what's in the 'trader' mags Mike, we are up on Sugar Mountain. Right at the top about 600 yards from the top of the ski lift. Newt, you're a pistol! Can't wait to ride with you again! I found one at 8x5 enclosed for $2200. The wife had a fit! But I hear ya Pat and will push it and as I have time, I have options. Tom, I thank God every day I am in this quandary. Hard work, sacrifice, and being smart with the money has done us right so far. I would have never imagined my current position. I figured I'd be in a cardboard box under a bridge by now...

I got one off ebay last year. $800, nice too ... Took me to Sturgis ... Gas was expensive pulling that thing, i'll bet you 20 or 30 times what it took to just ride the bike out there. The trailer was ? 400+ lbs, and the bike on it, another 500 lbs ... Hills are ? not cruise control gear. Quote:

Phil, I talked to my riding buddy this evening and he has a 14', 2, possible 3 motorcycle Haulmark trailer. I asked quickly, before I forgot what I was supposed to ask him about (51 ) It has a rear door that opens down into a ramp. I've seen it, well built, sturdy, lots "O" features. I guess you can go to this page and design one for your needs. I believe he paid around $2k. But then you can use something like this for lots of applications. http://www.haulmark.com/classifieds are a good source also. John

Oh get over it already!! Hi my name is Ed and I HAVE a trailer. We have a 30' motor home and the only way to enjoy the places we go with the bike was to pull it behind. I bought a 5' x 8' steel floor trailer ($500)traded the local bed liner guy a tool box to spray it with Rhino liner stuff. Put a front chock and rear rail on it with the intention of using the tilt up option. These bikes are sooo long by time I had the bike in place the center of gravity was still back of center. So the wife had to push the front of the trailer down (that didn't work well). Then I built a ramp that stores under the trailer. Pull two pins slide the ramp out align three tabs into slots put the pins back in and drive up. Tie her down with four straps slide the ramp back in and go. The white trash neighbor to my north asked me last year if I wanted to sell it, his dad was going to Sturgis!!! Necessary Evil, but it works for me!! ModelMaker

actually Phil, I was thinking about getting one too, but an open one, for the move to Colorado (WHEN and IF this ever happens) I would just tow the VW behind the bike, but really don't want to wear out the chain doing so, but I have found that I can have the bike crated and shipped for what it would cost me for a simple open trailer and hitch, so... I may still change my mind though, cause I can still use the trailer for hauling trash, appliances,etc... Have you tried Lowes or Home Depot, they sell simple, decent enclosed trailers. Not sure on the pricing, but it's a start. OH, they do have one other functional purpose, since God forbid, the bike decides not to run one day (I don't expect this), and I can't figure it out, I then at least have the option of hauling it to the dealer. Actually, I just remembered, I saw a REALLY slick open trailer that's made in Dahlonega, believe it or not. The platform pivots on the axle, so you lower the platform down, ride onto it, then winch it up to the frame and lock it in place. No ramps needed, and about $1500. Sweet looking and you'd have to ride up to Chy's to get it!! Double bonus!

Got a link to that trailer Greg? The enclosed part is all about security. I might have to stop (not particularly on these NC trips) overnight in a motel. Short of bringing the bike into the room , the enclosed trailer will afford some measure of security.

Hey Phil.. couldn't you just slap the bike in the back of your truck? My Speedmaster fits just fine in the back of my shortbed Chevy, should fit just fine in the back of your Dodge Cheers, Brad

I actually thought about that but it definitely would stick out onto the tailgate (Dakota bed is 5'). The stock setup on the gate probably would not be strong enough. I thought about a reinforced base for it or something of that nature and I still have not given up on that. They also make a loading device called the Rampage Power Lift Ramp which is pretty cool but dang is it expensive!! I had already checked out all the links at WebBikeWorld that Moe provided above. Still looking.....

You should be alright as long as you don't choose to stop in Pigeon Forge,TN (bike stealing scum!!). Apart from that one fateful time, never had any problems leaving mine in a motel lot.

Go for it Phil, we have a motorhome, but would love a trailer to pull the trump behind in the UK. When we are in Europe we use a little scooter, not much fun but really good to the gallon. My Mrs will not drive the motorhome as she says it is to big for her to handle....

I think your tailgate should be more than capable of supporting the back of the bike! Those cables are pretty darn strong (I've know at least one friend who has bent their dakota's tailgate from weight and the cables were just fine). You might also want to look into getting something like the ready ramp which extends your cargo capacity a bit as well as being a nice loading ramp. At under $300, sure is a heck of a lot cheaper than a trailer and can be used for other hauling chores as well Cheers, Brad
