Hi,

I am new to this forum but I noticed there are a lot of people here that are very mechanical and knowledgeable. I am not mechanical at all. I can do minor things like changing my CDI. I changed it last year when it was warm out so didn't know yet that I had a problem.

I changed it and now the bike won't start up when it's cold. If the temperature isn't too cold it starts right up. Has anyone had this issue? Do I need to buy a stock CDI? Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 2003 America.

Can't really help with the CDI. And yes, there are some very knowledgeable members here and most with the earlier models. What CDI did you install last year? New or used OEM, Procom or other?
TTP (TriumphTwinPower) has a "Fire Starter" igniter that has been well reviewed as a simple replacement if needed. Have read several that went the Procom route and took some time to find the best settings.

09 America, some modifications

You have to be sure you put the Procom on the right setting.

Thanks for the links. Looks like it's very common to have a hard starting issue. My fault for not researching it more. I would have bought the other CDI. I can't even get mine to start at all when it's cold out.

I had no issue with starting on Wendys bike but I had it jetted right and I can't remember what setting it was on but I remember it wasn't the same as most having the starting issue.

I believe I set mine on 3 because the only modifications on my bike are the scepter mufflers. I just wish you didn't have to take the tank off every time you made a change.

You need to set your Procom to position 6 which corresponds to CDI factory part # T1292370 for 865 engines or position 7 which corresponds to CDI factory part # T1292060 for 790 motors. Americas, Speedmasters, and Scramblers are 270 motors and all of the rest of the settings are for 360 motors found in the Bonneville variants. The custom maps DO NOT correspond with CDI setting, they have to be loaded onto the CDI off the included disc from a computer.

2006 865 Neon Blue/Jet Black Speedmaster,790cams, TTP Stage 2 Firestarter, Epco Exhaust with 10.25" Samson Vrod baffles, UNI pods with 40 pilots, 150 mains,Thruxton needles, 3 turns out.

Why did you change the CDI unit in the first place? It seems like the Procom units are a bit cold blooded if not set up right. The TTP units have been very good. You have a 2003 America so it has the 790 engine. You also stated you have the Scepter cans? Do you know if the snorkels were removed and if the carbs have been re-jetted?

Sorry for late reply. Been having serious back issues. Anyway the snorkels have not been removed. Not sure if carb was rejetted. I bought bike new with scepters added on.
