this saturday morning my speedmaster broke the left con rod and shredded the cases. Left quite an impressive oil slick and many small bits of metal on a highway on ramp.
the motor is toast. many options to weigh now. I will probably wait until I can tear it down to see if the top end is salavgeable before I decide.
anybody got a motor for sale?

Ouch! Shredding the cases brings new meaning to the term "Air Cooled Engine". Feel for ya. By your signature it looks like the engine was built up pretty good. Do you think the larger engine and higher compression was too much for it? You don't hear of these engines letting go often.

I was going to suggest Ebay as well, That's where I got the one for my hardtail build if I can ever get the time to work on it.

My build up of the motor was certainly the cause. I believe the root problem was my decision to stay with the stock con rods. On the other hand it lasted for a long time with me really whaling on it, all the time, every time.
I just bought a 06 motor off eBay. Not a bad price. Hopefully it is a good motor. I may throw in it as is and be sure it runs, then tear it down over the winter.
I am pretty sure that I am not going to be happy with a stock motor for long.

I hope you looked closely at it, if from a wrecked bike it seems very common that the front mount gets damaged.

How long did the motor last? How many miles on the bike? WHAT OIL DO YOU USE?

I’ll bet that was a lot more dramatic than when my 64 Trophy shredded the top end but I’ll bet the sudden deceleration was very similar. Glad to hear you weren’t hurt.

I could only tell so much from the pictures. The motor should be here in a few days. I will look it over thoroughly
I am thinking to go to an 1100. Assuming that my head and cams are still good and it's just the cylinders and pistons and Carrillo rods (this time) and no more 12:1's.
I have a strong feeling that low octane fuel played a big part in this.
As for oil, always Mobil T 1 racing 20-50 full synthetic. Running though better than OEM coolers. Moments before it blew I looked down at the temp and pressure gauges. And all was good.

I started tearing the bike down to pull the motor and the more stuff I take off the was it gets. the upper case is ripped open both fore and aft of the left cylinder, the rear balancing shaft is broken and an internal oil line pulled out.and the left spark plug was hammered to flush. I haven't pulled head yet but do not expect good news there.
the only plus so far is the side covers are good, so are is the new clutch and the cam shafts.

After sorting the few good bits left out of this, I pulled the trigger on a Bonneville Performance 1100. It is being built around my TB 270B cams After thinking about it for a long time, I figured it wasn’t much more cost to have the motor built than to source all the parts and do the work myself. It should be done before the snow is gone. So spring is break in time

Really looking forward to how the 1100 will run. Glad to see you aren't giving up on the old girl. I remember all the work you did and reports you posted on the original engine build. Good luck.

What's the numbers (torque & HP) Bonneville Performance is promising on this 1100 motor?

he has not done a motor with the TB cam yet, so only estimates for now. However he asked for the past dyno runs I had with those same cams, carbs, headwork and based on that, looking at 107 plus hp.
any bump over what I had will be considered a bonus. My goal here was to not take a step down in power while still being able to run (with carbs) on available pump gas.

I received a text yesterday saying the motor is built and will be pressure and heat tested this week. As it is no longer 50 below at my house, I am starting to get excited.
There were some pictures with the text (sorry I cannot post them) the motor looks massive with those billet cylinders and over sized manifolds. The cases were re blacked also.

no end it sight too the wicked cold!
I got a call the other day on the motor, while heat testing it would not rev up past 4000 rpm with the 39mm FCR's. not enough fuel apparently. So it looks like going to the 45mm HSR Mikunis. I am assured there will be huge bottom end with these carbs plus teh ability to rev to 10,500! I hope so, as this (like most bike projects) is rapidly becoming a money pit!
plus there will be a pair of FCR's available is anyone is interested.Great for a 865/904cc
