So, how about another "spirited" little discussion about LANE-SPLITTING again??? And where I feel like bangin' my freakin' head against the wall while attempting to enlighten so many of you around here about the various advantages to such a practice when done in a SAFE and SANE manner?!!! (...yep, THAT might get the ol' juices flowin' again around this here seemingly on-the-wane website, ALRIGHT!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

OH! And for you "blokes" across the pond and where you ride your motorcycles on the "wrong" side of the road and still insist on spelling certain words in this somewhat shared language of ours with that OH so needless superfluous letter 'u', THIS would of course be known to YOU as "filtering". (...well, at least this is what I've heard the nomenclature would be over there and about this whole "controversial" lane-splitting issue, anyway)

Yeah, the operative words here are "safe and sane"! Which doesn't describe a whole lot of the nut cases in cars(especially pretty young women in new cars ) who are also a "passive" part of this road technique. I did some lane splitting while I was in Cali a couple of years ago, saved a TON of time. But I was scared sheetless the whole time I was doin it!

What bike of yours were you riding at the time, Rich?
'Cause to be honest with ya here, if I were riding my Indian Springfield with those crash bars and hard saddlebags sticking out the sides of it, I doubt I'd be lane-splitting with that one, either.
(...except maybe if there were room between cars that were lined up and stopped at some red-lighted intersection...but on the freeways?...probably not, as that bike is too wide to do it, I'd think)

When it seems like most cagers can't figure out what the red, yellow and green lights are for, who goes first at a 4-way stop or how to navigate around a round-about... I think you're asking for trouble, safer to play Russian Roulette with 6 rounds in a revolver! People seem to make-up their own traffic laws and rules of the road. You maybe filtering legally but if somebody doesn't think so, you can explain it to them when your lying on the road. It would be better if DOT made a motorcycle only lane!

To be Frank( who is this guy, Frank?)the only way to make progress round our London Orbital M25 is to ' filter'.... I have been known vto do so with a set of very wide soft luggage and, I am told, acquired several car wing mirrors en route.

Well SURE, you'd feel this way, Steven. And 'cause YOU reside within the Commonwealth of MASSACHUSETTS, dude!!!
AND where I SWEAR while once driving around the streets of Boston in a rental car, I never EVER witnessed such bad freakin' driving performed by others anywhere ELSE in these United States!

what's the matter Dwight, sitting around with nothing to do? We got legal lane filtering down here a good while back, see here http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/stayingsafe/motorcyclists/lanefiltering/index.htmlBut Lane Splitting is illegal. Filtering is under 30 kmh, splitting is over 30 kmh.

Its only legal in California. In my state they will write a ticket for careless driving or improper lane change. The motor cops will usually leave you alone. Here is a map for where it is legal/illegal. Lane splitting by state

Well, if ya wanna get all serious here Ron , the funny thing is that even in California and until recently when they "codified" the proper manner in which to lane-split, it was also a state which, and such as in those yellow colored states in that link of yours, "not mentioned and not specifically prohibited", BUT was always "allowed" by the local LEAs and the CHP IF the observing officer felt the rider was doing it in a safe manner.
And so, IF down there in that Lone Star State you moved to a while back(you Yankee Carpetbagger you LOL) doesn't SPECIFICALLY "prohibit" it in your state's motor vehicle codes, and as that map suggests, then conceivably could someone cited for this "offense" down there fight and win and have this ticket thrown out of court because of that?
'Cause "legally" it sounds as if they COULD.
(...but yeah yeah, I know...those idiots judges EVERYWHERE will always side with the cop and his testimony, huh...and as an ex-Philly cop, YOU know that's true, and especially in cases involving driving citations, huh!)

It's also technically illegal in UK but everyone does it and the police will ignore it do long as you're being sensible. I once many years ago was knocked off my bike when filtering by a woman in a car who thought that a red light meant she could turn right anyhow. When it went to court there was no question about my filtering....in the Judges words ' the motorcyclist was there to be seen if you had looked for him' Bought my first Harley with the compensation payment

Thanks for the chart, Ron. I didn't know that. I chuckled about the states that have the rule "not mentioned but not specifically illegal".

And yeah, Dwight, I was on the Indian. And all I could think about was somebody opening their door to get out and smoke or a lane changer moving for position. But after watching three bikes go by me, and with a potential multi-hour wait in hot traffic, I followed the crowd. The BMW that I followed was easily going 55, but I crept along at about 40.

That is the problem with a charge called careless driving. Every state has one called something like that. Meaning driving a vehicle in a careless manner in disregard of traffic or weather conditions. The cop that doesn't like you doing it simply writes the ticket and testifies to the conduct explaining if somebody opened a door or tried to change lanes whatever and you are guilty.
I have split lots on the gridlocked interstate. One time a motor cop was behind me. I pulled into a lane and he drove on by. Its up to the cop. That is kinda scary because it lends itself to inconsistent enforcement. I think it should be codified like California.

I've just returned from my none too local Triumph shop 50 miles round a gridlocked M25.....filtered most the way.....passed police cars....nobody bothered by me. Many drivers will pull over a bit to give you a bit extra room to filter....but that's England for you.

Yeah, must be an "English politeness" kind of thing. Here in the States, plenty of people have the attitude, "that's my lane I'm driving in, damit! Mine, mine, MINE! And how DARE you go by me while I have to WAIT IN TRAFFIC! I'll teach you a lesson and make it so you can't GO MY ME!"

In that case, there must also be a little of the "Blighty" in the drivers of California.
'Cause, that whole "cars moving over to allow you more space to get by" thing was also a very common occurrence all those years I'd lane-split on the streets and freeways of The Golden State.
(...although I always used to chalk THAT all up to the thought that that sort'a thing was perhaps "the last bastion of that old 'California laid-back mentality'", and which for the most part no longer exists there anymore)

I did it at roadworks the other day.Illegal as you can only filter here under certain conditions but there was traffic lights and a mile of stopped cars so I slowly went down the emergency lane and popped into the head of the queue.BUT had I been seen I suppose they could have fined me.It's only supposed to be done on highways posted at 90KPH or more blah blah blah and this was down to 40KPH because of the roadworks. They like to leave the laws as ambiguous or as convoluted as possible here so the cops can seemingly book you when they want.

What works well ( here at any rate) is to give a cheerful wave of acknowledgement to those who pull over..it somehow seems to encourage others to be similarly courteous.

Lane splitting yes and passing on the left NO, sorry slow lane. Make it illegal to pass a vehicle in the slow lane which would get everyone to move over rather then sitting in the middle or passing lane as they would be eligible for a ticket as well. Driving out of Melbourne today on the M1 I mentioned to Jane that these people drive like Canadians jamming up the middle lane going slow in the fast lane forcing people to go to what should be the slow lane even though there are signs saying move over, just like in Canada.

We don't lane-split here ... Heaven forbid!
In UK not filtering would mean we get cold and wet and STILL stuck in traffic.
I took the Road Less Travelled.
Now where the ****** am I?

I was kidding Alan ... It is a way of life here. Also we have millions of 2-wheelers. Ask Dwight.

I guessed that....I was trying to square my experience of driving in Greece with no filtering....later today I'll be in Cyprus ( I know it's not technically Greek but it is in all but name where I'll be sure to give anyone filtering a stern talking to)

Perhaps we should adopt the Vietnamese model it seems to work for them. Lane sharing splitting driving up the lane on the outside the wrong way and driving up the sidewalk to get where you need to be to go the real direction you want to go. Crap its exhausting walking there!!

OH yeah! I can certainly vouch for the veracity of Thanassis' comment here, folks!
Yep, not ONLY do those crazy Greek riders "lane-split" and/or "filter" or WHATEVER the hell ya wanna call it, but they'll do it at some REALLY crazy speeds a lot of the time TOO!
(...in fact, sometimes I think some of 'em over there have some sort'a DEATH WISH, if ya ask ME...ESPECIALLY some of those ridin' around on scooters!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
