I saw THIS on the BBC website today.

Ok, I'll hold my hands up and show my ignorance, I never knew Mason & Dixon were Brits (rather than US-born to settlers).

(Though in my defence, I've never looking into the history of it before !)

Interesting, in school we are taught about the Mason-Dixon Line, but very little of the background leading up to it. Like you I assumed they were decedent's of earlier settlers. Recently I did a family tree DNA test, results of 72% British Isles. Like a lot of us American mutts, we have some Britt in us.

Very interesting bit O history thanks for bringing it up. Like Robert said many of us have British Isles in our heritage.

Not surprised by the fact the Mason & Dixon were from England and by extension ordered to do the work in America by the Crown. America was still an English colony and enterprise when they started their endeavor a full ten years before the American War of Independence. I imagine few educated Americans had these guys qualifications since the oldest American universities were divinity and old school liberal arts colleges.
