I am not looking for sympathy just to vent my feelings a little. As many of you know I love my dogs like children. My one is failing, kidney issue. She is still with me and I am doing all I can but it is just a matter of time. She adopted me, I was at the SPCA looking at dogs after Harley died but not looking to adopt. I walked by her cage without a 2nd glance. I left that room with a closed door to the main kennel. Kizmitt broke out of her cage and then out of that room and came out in the main kennel and sat down next to me. I knew she was coming home with me right then. I have had her over 9 years and she has been my shadow ever since, jumps up in my lap, paws on my shoulders and hugs me and gives me kisses. She never kisses anyone else, ever. I have been crying like a little girl at times, I am trying to be strong but it's killing me. Vet says anywhere from a few day to a couple months, it is hard to say. She is anemic and her kidney function is 4.5 when it should be 0.6 to 1.5, I am running fluids and trying to stay away from protien but I am giving her what ever she will eat so she gets something as she won't eat much at this point. I love her to death just like a child. I am a wreck, If 7you don't have anything nice to say please refrain from comment as I am in enough pain already.

I've had dogs all my life. Usually at least two. I have loved all of them but a few have been really special. I expect to lose them when I get them but that doesn't make it any easier. They are not like family, they ARE family. Make the most of the time you have left with Kizmitt, dogs seem to know what's happening as well as we do.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Dogs are one of Gods greatest gifts, a shame they have such a short life span. At least you gave the Dog a great life while you could.

I've been there, I can't drive by the place I spread my dog's ashes without tearing up. It's hard, just let the tears flow and know you've been blessed by Kizmitt's devotion in your life.

I have to say my new (sort of)vet is great. I had to run IV fluids for Kizmitt and have never done it before so I was scared to death I might hurt her. My Vet, Ann Sobers, gave me her home number in case I had any problems or questions. I didn't want to bother her at home but I wanted to be sure I did it right. She was very understanding and helped me. The IV fluids yesterday and today seem to have perked her up some and she actually ate a couple pieces of pizza tonight! She wouldn't eat much besides a fortune cookie or 2 or a couple chocolate chips, and I got her to eat a corndog but that's it. I even cooked mac and cheese for her and chicken noodle soup but she wouldn't eat those.I am glad to see hew perked up but I know it isn't permanent but the IV fluids should help her kidney function. I run them under the skin on her shoulders.I digress, I just wanted to say what a great person my new vet is. When I say newish I mean she has been seeing my dogs but at a practice of another great vet who died. She has now opened her own practise, she was fired from the other place by the new owners because she spends too much time with the animals and they accused her of stealing because she clipped the nails of an old couples dog free of charge who couldn't afford it because they had other services done there. She cares about the animals more than the bottom line and that's the vet I want and so do quite a few others. She is also inexpensive and like her old boss that passed on she prides herself on selling the meds cheaper than anyone else. I woul;d pay a little more to take my dogs there because of her attitude so the lower cost is a bonus. The devotion to give me her home number kind of says it all and help after hours and she is going to call me tomorrow to check in on her day off.

When love hurts that is when we know it is real. Sorry for all the two of you are going through. The trust and love dogs give us is unconditional. Just give it back man and make what time there is special for the both of you. Sometimes the word pet just isn't enough. I wish the both of you strength and peace Ian.

I'm with ya buddy. I have always loved my dogs, and the older I get, the more I love them. My last "special" dog wasn't even mine, he was my sons. We called him our "granddog", but his name was Jasper, a white boxer. My son and his wife worked nights so they left him with us every evening to stay with us and our dogs. He was the most lovey dog I've ever known and he had his own special pillow on the floor at the foot of our bed. We also called him "the oozer". He loved to lay across your lap but he WAS heavy, so we sometimes discouraged it. You'd tell him "no", and he would just stand by the recliner and look at you. You'd go back to reading or watching the tv and he would slowly, and I mean SLOWLY, lift one paw up to the chair. Then, another paw, then, some of his body. Pretty soon he'd be right on your lap! God, we used to laugh! He was only 5 years old and he suddenly got sick. My son took him to the vet but he died there overnight under observation. (That REALLY hurt to know he wasn't home when he passed). I cried like a baby when we went to get him and cried some more as we laid him to rest in our pet sematary. (Hell, I'm tearing up NOW as I write this!) I left his pillow at the end of the bed for a year cause I couldn't bear to throw it away! Not meaning to hijack your thread, Ian. Just letting you know that you have another like minded friend here!

I know how you feel my friend!! A very long time ago a friend of mine came home from serving military time in Germany with him was a German Shepard that he got while there . There came a time when he needed a loan so being the guy I am I helped him out never really expecting to be paid back knowing his situation . Anyway, some time went by and he came to me with a deal , he said he had breeded his dog with another Shepard in the hood and thought I might like to have pick of the litter to repay his loan. I really had no desire to own a dog but thought about it and decided to go look , thinking I would pick me out the biggest boy in the bunch and maybe sell him for repayment of loan? When we got there I immediately spotted the big guy I thought I would be taking home , biggest ears and feet you can imagine and obviously the biggest of the group. But wouldn't you know it the littlest runt of the bunch would not leave me alone and was a female to boot. Lol hard as I tried to ignore this little ****** she just would not leave me alone!! The big guy I wanted seemed lethargic and uncaring soooo you guessed it I ended up taking that little pup with me and my friend was left scratching his head wondering what I had just done lol welllll let me tell you she turned out to be the smartest little animal I have ever owned and loyal to a fault to me and my family!!! In time she also ended up with bladder and kidney problems and I had to let her go. Broke my heart big time !!! I did learn that sometimes our friends pick us and that we may end up very surprised by how that friendship turns out to be the best . I think the good lord sometimes gives us this to remind us that you can't always tell a book by its cover . I know this is breaking your heart but enjoy the fact that you had this special relationship for the time you did and as time passes never forget the lesson learned. I doubt you will ever have that again , I know I havnt , and am sure I never will. I think those of us that have had more than one know that there will always be " that one" the one that will remain in a special place in our hearts and never be matched . I know the sadness you feel and I feel for you but I believe when we get to the beyond we will play Frisby with our special friend again !!!
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

If there are no dogs in heavan I don't want to go, I want to go where ever they did. I have been blessed with a few great dogs. Kizmitt is special but I had another named Millie who was just as special and smart. Funny thing is that both of them I didn't want to adopt at first. Millie I got talked into by my sister and I told the story of Kizmitt I named her Kizmitt as a play on kismet meaning fate or meant to be. I will always cherish her memory and enjoy her company as long as I have left. She has perked up quite a bit today she actually ran from me and played just a little today. I also got her to eat a little again. I know it is temporary but it makes me feel good to see it. I like hearing these great stories of other special dogs who loved and were loved. Kizmitt is extremely intelligent too she opened the latches on a crate I tried to train her with because she didn't want to be in it, I gave it away. I keep the toilet lid closed so the dogs can't drink out of the toilet but if the bowl is empty she knows how to open the lid.I obviosly didn't train her to do either one, she just figured it out.

Man I hate to read this because I know how it ends and that's one of biggest heart aches this life can offer. Treasure the time you have left and remember those great moments you've shared. Ours are 9 and 7 and that's closing in on the edge with giant breeds so I'm trying to prepare myself and enjoy every day they're still healthy and active.

Sorry to hear of Kizmitt's condition, Ian.
As everyone here has already said, this sort of thing always deeply hurts those who cherish their pets.
In my case, my dog Moose is now getting up in years and I know it won't be all that much longer before I'll be suffering these feelings as you are right now.
(...but the good thing always seems to be that after you lose them, within a few months you tend forget the very end of their lives and pretty much only remember all the great times you had with them, and them with you)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Hey Ian I know how you feel. My dog is with me 24/7. The guys on my old job used to make jokes about whose funeral I would go to first, a family member or my dog's......Spend all the time you can with them and remember they love you unconditionally.

I got possible good news today. I took Kizmitt to my vet today for a recheck and there was very slight improvement but still very bad shape. The good news I got came later, my vet called me this evening ( did I tell you how great she is?)she told me not to get my hopes up but there is a small chance that she has a disease that is curable. Some of her symptoms fit this disease. I am taking her tomorrow to be tested for this disease, can't remember the name of it at the moment. I don't think I or Kizmitt could get that lucky but I am hoping it turns out to be that since she will get better then. My vet says she can't get us out of her mind because Kizmitt is so sweet and I love her so much.

Great News! And as far as dogs and heaven, there isn't much doubt for me that our pets will be with us there. Only thing is, how am I going to handle all those animals squirming and jumping on me while licking my face?!

Took her to the vet today for the test and I will know tomorrow if she has this disease or not. It is Addisons she is looking for. She gave her the addisons meds today and ran fluids with sodium for the Addisons too and gave her a shot of cortisone. She had an appetite this evening. She ate most of a cheeseburger on the way to the vet, when we got home after about 1 1/2 hrs I gave her a face bacon soft dog treat and she took it and ate it. First dog treat she would even take in a week. Then she ate a chicken breast and thigh I hand fed her, but after each bite she was looking for the next one. No coaxing , she even protected it from one of my other dogs. I don't know iof it was a result of the Addisons meds or the cortisone or both but it was great to see. She is still very pale but seems to be acting better. I have a small glimmer of hope she may pull through this. I will know tomorrow.

I sure hope the disease is curable. I've gone through similar situations with my four legged friends. I always say I'm not going through it again and never getting another dog but I always end up with one someone doesn't want. I love my dogs more than some people I know. I hope things turn out well.

If anyone is still interested, Kizmitt is doing well at the moment. She actually initiated play with one of my other dogs tonight and her appetite has been good, a little picky but good.Makes me feel good, I love that dog more than most could understand.

Thank you, she is holding her own so far. Her back end is a little weak but she is eating. I have to hand feed her and it is mostly rotissery chicken and roast beef hash but she wants it and eats plenty. She follows me all over, won't let me out of her sight if I am home. She needs help up the stairs. I just went to the vet today to get more antibiotics and IV fluids, she doesn't even complain about the IV, she is a great little girl.

A dog with an appetite is a good sign. Glad to hear. Also a little jealous. No one has ever hand fed me rotisserie chicken and roast beef hash!
I'm sure Kizmitt appreciates it.
