2005 America starts and idles, but when put in gear, engine stops. Kick-stand up or down, switch disconnected or connected makes no difference. My service manual wiring diagram shows the side stand switch, and a "neutral switch", but no other mention of the neutral switch in the entire manual. Anyone know where this "neutral switch" is located?? Thanks

http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...ge=0#Post320521try here. ps: there is a switch linked to the clutch also; (neutral, side stand and clutch all together for safety)

Thank You! Exactly what I was looking for! Perhaps the Haynes manual is more informative.

Haynes should be much more helpful, shop manuals assume a certain amount of existing knowledge.

There is a kill switch located in a counterbored hole on the bottom of our transmissions, it consist of a spring loaded Brass plunger rod, that ascertains as far as I know, whether you are in neutral or not and presumably tied into the safety failsafe, kick stand up/down, clutch pulled, start/run ability. The wires may have come undone, or the Brass rod has wore excessively. This will keep your bike from running if it has failed. Hope this helps. BTW, if you pull the sensor, you will experience oil, so prepare for that.

Yes. I started, or TRIED to start the bike, and it did start, but still spitting and sputtering when accelerated. Decided to go ahead and try to ride it, but when I pulled in the clutch and put it in gear, it died. I was like..AH HA, GOTCHA NOW! Looked at wiring diagram in my manual, and that side stand switch and neutral safety switch is seeking a ground for the CDI. I simply un-plugged the neutral safety switch and ran it strait to battery negative, and wah lah, she runs like new...3 switches can cause this high resistance to ground, the clutch switch, the side stand switch, and the neutral safety switch....I'll run 'em all to ground if I have to!!!

Harley's have none of those switches, they assume the rider knows how to ride. Won't be long until the government mandates idiot switches for all bikes sold in the USA, I'm pretty sure the folks in Europe already have this mandate.

If I ever have an issue all mine will go at once. I have 20 other bikes that don't have those safetys anmd I have been safely riding those for many many years.
