I'll keep this tight. I'd been anxious to try one of the new 2016 S series Harleys. So, this past week I forked over some bucks to spend 24hours with the FAT BOY LO, S series.

110ci Screaming Eagle in this bike is shockingly fast, and extremely powerful. When ridden carefully, the power delivery is very docile, and manageable. However, crack the throttle open, and buckle in, son. This bike truly has a Jekyll/Hyde personality. Such an exciting ride!

NOW.. with all the eye-widening, grin-educing thrills aside, I will say this: It's still, at it's core, a Harley Fat Boy.. So, it handles like a row boat.
Running on tires, which are very similar to that which a ski boat would tow, with riders within...
Really, you need to muscle this thing into the twists.

I think the Softail Slim S, or the Low Rider S might handle better.. but the Fat Boy, provides an almost luxurious ride.

To be fair, now that Harley has radically deviated from the original circa 1929 air compressor engine design, they now, will get up and go 85 MPH all day long.

So will the old bikes made by HD. I used to ride with a friend who had a couple pans and a shovel and then another friend who had a knuckle, all would do the ton and then some. Only one of the bunch was stock and that one was a little slower but would still keep up at 85, that one was a bone stock 51 inch EL pan.

My best mate has a wide glide and that bike will RUN!He has thrown a bucket full of money at it over the years though, big bore, etc.etc.

I still enjoy telling him what I read on RAT though.

All good fun. My buddy loves his 80 sportster, and I don't think anything will get him off one. Having said that, he is not an idiot and admires plenty of other bikes.

I like to tell the 99 out of 100 Harleys ever made are still on the road today.......the other one made it home.

When they do break down I also like to ask "How much did you pay for that thing again?"

And we self deprecating Triumph types like to make fun of ourselves, which we can do since we aren't so full of ourselves. Used ta love the Lucas stuff...but I guess that ain't true anymore.

The Lucas thing never was really true. I have Lucas generators and magnitos that have been working for 50+ years and still do. The alternating current generators in the units work forever too. The downfall was the crappy wiring harness. That being said, I have been known to ask why the English drink warm beer, then the answer is , because Lucas made the refigerators.

Yep Joe Lucas "the Prince of Darkness"
I can't remember having trouble with Lucas either except I had a 5" sealed beam headlight that'd drain the battery faster than the 6 volt magneto on my T110 could charge it.But that was my fault for putting it on[I built a chopper] In my defence,I was 17 and knew nothing[I still know nothing]

I thought about trying a Fatboy but then realized I have already driven a dump truck.

My second bike when I was 20 was a 71 Trophy 650, never had a problem with the electrics and it never leaked oil. go figure.

I had to get a picture to know what model you were talking about since I am by no means a Harley guy. I would like to see a comparison between the Fatboy S and a Thunderbird Storm. I does look badda$$.

You guys in the US must have got the good ones Paul!
My 71 Tiger weeped oil from the primary cover as soon as I took it from the shop.No electric problems though. It was a little bit too tall for me ,and had the Bread basket tank as all the "normal"tank versions we got here were snapped up first .
I got smashed up on it by a cage, and when I got it back,[8 months later!]it was never the same bike. Those too tall, oil in the frame. 71 Triumphs and BSAs virtually sunk the company here IMO.The crappy local dealer didn't help.

Yeah I guess I was lucky. Had a good small town dealer also. Being it was my 1st Triumph and no internet around then, I didn't know Triumphs were supposed to leak.

I really think there were wednesday bikes and Friday bikes, I have seen the same year and model where one leaks badly while the other not a drop.

I was told about " Friday" cars by an ex-foreman of a car plant so I know what you mean.I think I paid about $1,400 for my'71 Tiger and a friend bought one for $1,200.They eventually sold for about $1,100 if I remember correctly. They couldn't move them from the dealers floor, especially as the 650 Yamaha, and Honda 4 were starting to take off.

A friend and I went looking at 3 different bike dealers Saturday, Wow, are Asian bikes cheap. My local Jap mega store had new Bolt R models marked down to $6,700, and new 2 year old 950 cruisers at $5,990. That's almost half the price of the Triumph and Harley models. How can they do this? And how much is the dealer making if they sell a Bolt for MSRP ? P.S. Nobody had a Yamaha Scrambler in stock yet, the bike we were looking for.

Mass production. They make millions of bikes, they floor plan them at the dealer and the margins are small. My local dealer makes his money through off road four wheeler sales and the bikes are pretty much just eye candy.

I have seen some pretty cheap prices on 2 year old new Triumphs on e-bay. I bet you could find a 2 year old left over Triumph Scrambler for around $6999. As far as Harley, they make only cruisers but a brand new 2016 883 Sportster is what, $8900? I would stack a Bonnie/Thruxton 865 against a 950 rice burner any day of the week. But hey I could be slightly biased.

Well a NEW 2 year old Triumph Scrambler at $6999 I can believe, but a 2016 Bolt R for $6700 caught me by surprise. No wonder the young guys buy Asian.

I guess I can see your point. But what I was trying to say was, as far as comparable bikes according engine size, Triumphs are not twice as expensive as a discounted Bolt. Unless you are talking about the new Bonnie or Thruxton 1200 at around $12K. And that is comparing apples to oranges because of the displacement and newly designed engines. I think the "new" Triumph inc. is fully aware of marketing and targeting younger age groups. That's why their sales continue to increase every year.

And then I did some research into sales figures because I was going off memory. Old memory as it turns out...about 1/2 million units sold in 2015 in the US down from 1.2 million in 2007. HD had around a 35% market share, so my assertion that the Asian makers had greater US sales is waaay wrong, that's only true for worldwide sales. Around 600,000 bikes made in Japan last year contrasted with about 250,000 from HD.
As far as my neighborhood goes the vast majority of bikes are HD with the other large percentage various Japanese makers. I know of two Triumphs, I think I've seen a Thruxton blast by and there's the odd BMW about.

I'm looking at buying a bike in Thailand where I spend half my time. All big bike prices are outrageous there but a new street twin[Thai built] is 390,000 baht a new 650 Kawasaki Vulcan S [Thai built]that I'm considering is 285,000 with 18,000 to spend in the dealer.I'd lOVE a new America or Speedy[Thai parts but imported with import tax] but not for 750,000 !!!! A new Yamaha bolt[imported with taxes] is 470,000 I think. There's about 35 baht to the U S dollar ATM and 26 for an Aussie dollar.

Well a NEW 2 year old Triumph Scrambler at $6999 I can believe, but a 2016 Bolt R for $6700 caught me by surprise. No wonder the young guys buy Asian.

This was one of the reasons they killed the British bikes industry before.Cheap, reliable, powerful bikes.

Yeah but modern Triumphs while not quite as cheap as Asian models, ARE powerful and reliable.

I found the unit twin Triumphs to be reliable, rode one all over the country. that being said not as reliable as the jap bikes. Triumph twins are also powerful for the time. Funny that at the time 650 and 750cc bikes were big bikes.

Triumph with worldwide sales at 54,000. But continues to grow at 4.5% per year.

I agree completely.I've got Triumph blood in my veins but I can see how the Jap bikes took over.Having said that an America/speedy is about $15,000Aust.on the road here in Australia.I wont pay nearly $30,000Aust.for one in Thailand when I can get a reasonable Kawa for about $11,000Aust.there.

My America seems larger than my friends wide glide when they're next to each other. Not the engine of course but the overall size.
I was at a bike shop while ago and there was a restored Honda 4 there. It looked like a small bike these days.in 1970 they seemed huge

Speaking of size, my America next to a Victory the other day looked small, until I noticed the Victory rear fender stuck out almost 8 inches past the rear tire. I guess someone at Victory is over compensating, I wonder if he stuffs a sock in his underwear?
