Hey guys, long time no post. And long time no start for the bike.... Had a baby last year, so I haven't started it in a long time. I washed it, then went to start and it just clicks rapidly. Put it back on the trickle charger for a couple hours, the green light is on, still just clicks. Is it possible that the battery just isn't taking enough of a charge anymore (10 years) and the charger thinks it's full but it's not? Of course it's saturday afternoon at 5 so places are closing and won't be open tomorrow... Thanks all
Benny

Try a regular charger (~ 2 amp), but 10 years is old,I thinks it's time for a new one. BTW congrats...

Battery is probably toast and you answered your own question. To confirm, try boosting the bike with the car (engine off).

Yeah, Benny. Ten year old batteries are pretty darn long in the tooth, alright! Five'll getcha ten(dollars that is, not years) once ya get yourself a new battery your bike'll start right up. (...btw, don't try to start your bike anymore with that old one, as attempting to start it with a weak battery might wear down your sprag clutch's engagement dogs)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Thanks boys! Anyone ever get a dry cell battery for their bike? Alternate question: What should I look for in a battery if I go somewhere other than the dealer? Alpha-numeric code etc...

Best bang for the buck right now is an inexpensive AGM of the proper size...like a Chrome on Amazon...

When I pull up an AGM YTX12-BS battery on Amazon it tells me it doesn't fit my bike lol. Silly amazon... It's nice that it let's you check fit, but it won't let you search by make/model, at least that I can see.

Ordered one from Amazon for 35, it'll be here tomorrow. I figure this last one got me 10 years, I can put off the lithium upgrade for a while I think the more expensive Wally World one comes pre-charged...

Well boys n girls I thought I would follow up and also thank everyone for their help. If my memory serves me, when my original battery died in 2004-ish, it was the good folks here that helped me diagnose it. Full circle I got my new battery last Wednesday, installed it thursday after work, and man that thing started right up! It's like a new bike... I've never had it start and run so well after a storage period, and this time it was almost a whole year! I'm wondering if some of the rough running I'd experienced the last couple summers was just not enough juice. At any rate, it works great. I've got some new carb boots and vacuum caps to put on this winter. Hopefully next summer I have more time to ride
