I gave up looking and just added one of these to the license plate. That was several years ago.

http://www.cyclegear.com/GYB-PRODUCTS-Stopper-BrakePlate-LED-Light

I have since seen some that fold up to fit inside the housing, then open into a starfish shape. And saw someone build a board of LEDS specifically for his taillight shape. Don't remember who though.

i forget if they're 1156 or 1157. pretty sure 1157, though. you can also find them in red, as these can be bright enough to look pink through the red lens.

Isn't a 1156 a single element and the '57 a dual?

You can take the bulb out and read the no.# printed on the bulb. Be careful when re-installing the bulb, the contacts in the socket are made of tin foil, not exactly but close to it.

I would be interested to hear your impression of this LED stop light if you bought it. On one web page I was reading the author suggested the differential between running and stop was just as important as overall brightness. Too little and drivers behind might not notice the change.

I've had real good luck with these guys

http://www.customdynamics.com/

They have a lot of neat LED products.

Someone did a test and review of 3 or 4 led bulbs awhile back here. He even included pictures. I tried to see if I could find it but my search skills are lacking. I got mine from Auto Zone it is the 1057. It did come in a 2 pack but I gave the extra one to brother in law for his bike. In my opinion it is brighter than the standard bulbs.

It's important that the bulbs face out from the bike in the direction you want to have them seen from and that they be the same color as the lens on the bike (unless the lens is clear that is.) I had to do some surgery on the housing to make that happen. I also bought some red lenses for the rear turn signals and some red led bulbs for them.

I also bought the universal triple play module http://www.customdynamics.com/tailconversion_kit.htm This allows rear turn signals to function as running light, brake light and turn signals and has a built-in 10 pattern brake modulator for center tail light or turn signals or both during brake light operation. Full-Contrast blink function allows blinker lamps to blink from OFF to FULL BRIGHT for maximum visibility.

So I have three very bright LED tail lights, VERY bright turn signals and three VERY bright brake lights that flash 3 times when I hit the brakes. All together it cost me about $230 but I figure that one rear end collision avoided makes them well worth it.

The signal minder SM1 flayer unit/ signal canceller will do something very similar but will cause your front turn signals to flash too.

If you go with LED Bulbs you will need to have a $7 diode kit to put into the single bulb turn signal dash indicator because otherwise the cross talk will cause ALL the LED turn signals to flash. It takes about ten minutes to install. http://www.customdynamics.com/loadequalizer.htm

The rear tail light on my Speedmaster illuminates the licence plate through a clear section in the top of the lens how would that look with a red LED as you suggested?

There are license plate bolts with clear LEDs built in. You could use them to illuminate your plate.

Since most of the light from the taillight goes out the back, the light thrown up to the plate is less than with an incandescent bulb. I put a white LED lighted chrome plate frame on the plate so it is legally illuminated.

Customdynamics has a tag bolt with dual colour, white for plate and either red or amber rear facing that can be used for running, brake or signal.
