Tires aren't really an accessory but WWW tires are not a necessity either so I'm putting this here. As of now, the Dunlop K1777 120/90-18 WWW tire has been discontinued. For some time now, this was the ONLY white wall tire out there that fit the front wheel of our bikes. So, if you are considering WWW tires act immediately! Today, our local Honda dealer found me one in some warehouse somewhere, but few remain in existence.
Remember, the are no other options. The Dunlop K177 was it. Glad I got mine before it was too late.

That really sucks bad. I don't think my bike would look right if I had to go back to blackwalls.

Actually, any tire other than factory originals is an accessory.

Guess the time to pimp out Cinnamon Girl has gone. NOS means old DOT dates. Good on ya Keith for grabbing a tire though. I've always wanted a set of white walls but by the time I was ready to leave Avons and Metz the choices where gone or restricted by a front fender mod. As it was I did leave the top dogs for Bridestones, Kendas and IRCs. Next tires will be Metzelers 880s.

How does the expiration date affect a tire if it's kept in an inside room temp. environment ?

I was just talking to our local Honda dealer guy 'bout that. I've known him and shopped at his family business for 40 years now. He told me of a guy that came in and bought 10 tires of the same discontinued line. I raised concern that after a few years the spares wouldn't be any good anymore. My dealer friend said as long as they don't see sunlight and are stored in not-too-dry humidity, they will be okay, even after 10 years.

That's interesting, Keith. I've seen so many news reports and warnings about the older tires. Who's to say...? So were you explaining that some dude came in and bought 5 sets of those Dunlop white walls? I don't know but if you ask me that's kinda hoggin up the goods and being greedy. On the other hand, if you have the money and love the tire, early bird gets the worm for a lack of a better expression. That bike I posted with the painted rims came across my path on facebook from one of the Triumph guys. I thought it looked badazz.

Nah, Chris... it wasn't the Dunlop WWW this guy bought. He had some vintage bike with an odd size front tire and bought ten o' them for his bike. Getting back to the white rims... the more I look at that the more I like it. Hmmmm, maybe I could do that and run a low profile rear tire like he has on the back. Just thinking out loud.

I still have the maxxis on the front, but it's getting low. Replaced the rear maxxis with metzeler www. I really like it, just wish they made a front to match.

OH?...okay, its just the front ones on short supply then.
Well mines in the mail and I wont be using it for a while, but who cares, gotta stock up...haha
Its funny because if I had to, I'd ride with a blackwall on the back, I just NEED a WW on the front. And theyre getting rid of them...BAH

I don't remember the source, but it was one of those "myth buster/ nye the science guy" types that claimed it had to do with the chemical composition of rubber.
If it's not kept in a constant state of motion (movement), it starts to harden.
No doubt they will survive longer out of the sun, but you MUST also keep them off concrete, and stored on their side, to prevent flat spots. (this, I KNOW!)
I also know YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE DEMANDS "NO TIRE FAILURES!"
I would think that MOST, IF NOT ALL tires are kept inside, from the manufacturer, to the warehouse, to the tire dealer. But the common consciences SEEMS to be, avoid old tires!

You can buy Bridgestone Spitfires with Raised white lettering. The 491 still requires fender bracket modification.

For those considering hoarding some tires for later years, don't forget the degrading effects ozone has on rubber. It's hard to escape since it is present everywhere in the atmosphere. I don't know if it is practical or if there would be any benefit, but some plastics manufacturers (Stihl weedeater blades) recommend to "Always store thermoplastic blades in water. The moisture absorbed improves the ductility of the thermoplastic and thus extends the life of the blades." I don't know if storing tires in water would help or not, but they would not be exposed to the atmospheric effects. Also, I'm unsure if the thermoplastic benefit would be applicable to the rubber/mystery material that our bike tires are made of. Just thinking.... food for thought...

I figured I'll keep them in the basement in the plastic they came in, and lay them on their side. I'm thinking a max of 3-4 years, depending on how they wear. My maxxis front has been on since summer 08, and it's about time for a new one.

FYI: the rubber is also highly susceptible to ozone. so, you know, don't build your basement in the upper atmosphere.

The "Good" ozone that protects us from some of the radiation from space is located in the stratosphere some 10-30 miles up in the atmosphere. The "Bad" ozone that affects our health and our tires is in the troposphere from ground level up to 10 or so miles. It is the same O3 30 miles up, but we nor our tires are affected by it. That being said, keeping your tires for a couple of years should be no problem.

I found some at Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. They had 2 K177's in stock. While I was deciding it dropped to 1. So bought a K177 and a K555. Now I have to do the fender mod and figure out how to reroute the brake line. Thinking of 2 lines from the master cylinder.
