First time the bike hasnt started in 7 years of ownership.

Anyway, one morning after riding the bike the night before, i went to start the bike and only heard a "click" coming from beneighth the tank.

"Starter relay" i says to myself after reading the many posts on this board. i replaced the relay with one from radio shack though the only one they had that matched didnt have the "center" plug in comparison to the origional.

Still wont start.

The battery is brand new, so that shouldnt be an issue. The lights, horn and blinkers all work and are all bright.

Going to check the kickstand killswitch tommorrow, but i am having my doubts that that is an issue. Could it be a fuse? Bad starter

How so i tell if a fuse is blown on one of these fuses?

I just want to check everything before i take it to a shop and get nailed for labor fees.

I cant be 100 percent sure, but i vauguly remember the bike not starting/turning ovetr right away the night before and hearing "the click" but then firing

Any help would be greatly appreciated

For the fuse check...just pull the fuse out and look to see if the metal is broken/fried inside the plastic. You'll be able to tell if it looks fine or not.

Also check the clutch kill switch. And I would imagine that if the starter relay has 5 pins and you replaced with a 4 pin relay you might have a problem.

For sure check the batt. I was having all kinds of problems, I was chasing ghosts for 2 days. Lights were bright and all but I figured batt was fine. Charged it anyway and all problems were gone. These bikes like their juice.

Check All battery connections! Ground wires to the frame, wire from relay to starter(primary wires) and check the secondary grounding wire. I had a problem like this, it was the ground wire to the frame got a little dirty. A little cleaning, dap of silicone grease, tighten back up...all was good. Good Luck

I'd get the correct relay installed before performing any further diagnostics.

also check that 3 wire plug that runs to-from the regulator, 3 yellow wires, under the seat. that is how mine was acting and i, chy, and Mikemm found that plug melted. got to pull the seat off and its inside that little compartment, you wont see it without opening that up, and still i had to pull it apart to see that it was melted inside. easy fix. good luck and let us know when you figure it out.

twas a fuse. i had checked the "engine turnover arrow" fuse which was fine, but the fuse which acording to the guide is for high/low beam was blown. Replaced that fuse and she fired right up. Still confused on as why that fuse would cause a failure to even turn over.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

No!

as newt wrote, "when we took the seat off we found that the connector plug for the voltage regulator/rectifier was burnt to a crisp and even had a wire burnt off. we were able to splice the wires together (side of the road type repair for then) and found charging to be ok. i wanted to post this because like i said, others as it turns out have had this problem and i think everyone should check theirs. it is the plug with 3 yellow wires on one side and blue/black on the other."

thanks Moe, guess i should have been more clear about it being a 3 wire connector plug under the seat, but i didnt think anyone would think it was a spark plug under the seat oh well, i guess that happens when you are writing and not being right there talking
