I have a 1985 AMC Eagle(love it).I've been having starting issues with it lately and I'm thinking starter but I've been second guessing myself.I have'nt tinkered with cars for a while now. When you go to crank it it will crank for a few seconds and then the starter will "free spin".
Eventually it will catch and start the car.Could it be the solenoid? I don't want to change both if I don't have to.Money's a little tight right now. Thanks for your input.Charlie.

Could be two things.
1 you got teeth missing on the flywheel.
2 the starter is plunging back in momentarily.
Its easy to find out if the fly is damaged. Chock the tires, make sure she's inneutral, jack her up, remove the fly cover, mark the flywheel with a magic marker. and use a pry bar to to turn the flywheel until you have inspected the whole way round. If thats good its the starter. If the solenoid were bad it would only click at ya while failing to engage the starter at all. Hope this helps ya get the car up and going again.

Hey Chad! thanks for the quick reply.I'm pretty sure it's not the flywheel.I'm gonna go with the starter as you said.Another thing I forgot to mention,it will crank much better when stone cold verses when it's warm.Well guess I'm off to the auto parts store. Thanks again buddy..

A loose starter will act this way.....but is a bit rare

If the starter has a Bendix drive, the spring could be weak. Also could be that the engine needs a tuneup. If it tries to fire but doesn't actually start, it will kick the starter drive out of engagement.

This is what I was going to suggest as well, I've had it happen to me before.

Plus 3. Replace the starter or rebuild it with a new bendix. (Actually, I don't think you can get parts anymore to replace just the bendix ).

I had a 1982 Datsun KingCab truck that had similar problems. I had about 120,000 miles on it when it would start great when cold, but acted like I had a bad battery when engine was at normal operating temperature. It was the started, and in particular the bearings in the started.
