My Mom on Long Island felt it as well as my daughter in law in Millers Creek N.C. about eight miles from my house in Wilkesboro N.C. We didn't feel a thing here.Go figure.

I heard on the news this early morning that a 5.3 quake had occurred close to Trinidad CO. Weird how two moderate quakes hit in odd areas (read Not in Cali) on the same day.

My wife was teaching a class in Springfield MA and called me saying that desks were moving around due to an aftershock... That's just an aftershock.

Thought maybe Triumph was testing the Rocket IV or something...
A 3 second rumble was followed by a 2 minute "vibration" we could feel through the floor just west of Baltimore, MD. We stood in doorways for about 5 minutes and it's been quiet since. Calls to Carlisle, PA and Richmond, VA indicate similar experiences with co-workers. No reports of damage or injuries. Pretty fortunate!

It was pretty freaky. Chandelier swayed for a while. It woke my son up. My daughter spazzed....
(last time we had an earthquake over 5.0 in VA was May 31, 1897: Giles County. Largest earthquake in intensity and areal extent, with aftershocks continuing through June 6, 1897; Magnitude 5.9. So....maybe we get some after-shocks.)
I'm taking 5 in the pool for mentions of PTSD on the local news tonight.

What an exceptional memory you have
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

After Washington DC realized that the earthquake was nothing to worry about, they took to Twitter to joke about the cause. Some of the best ones below:
@TPCarney: Krugman says it wasn't big enough.
@comradescott: Evidently the quake occurred on a little known fault line outside of DC called "Bush's Fault".
@calebhowe: Breaking: Obama administration points out they "inherited" fault lines from previous administrations.
@MaizeBlueNation: Fox News claims the Washington monument is leaning to the right, MSNBC claims it's leaning to the left. More news at 11.
@charliespiering: I won't stop shaking until Obama makes a speech telling me that everything is ok and that he has a plan.
@Ben_Howe: As all of DC leaves work at the same time, the United States experiences a brief economic recovery.

You are wrong. USGS tracks dozens of quakes a day, pretty much every day. This was the biggest quake in VA in 110 years, which is NOTHING in geologic time, NOTHING. I have read that geologists think NYC is overdue for a tremblor which is mostly problematic because of older architecture and building construction. Living pretty much anywhere on earth is like living near the train track, only without the scheduled rumbles.

Quakes can be rough, but we are due for solar activity in a couple of years from now that could conceivably fry entire electrical grids planetwide (and your cars ignition, laptop, PC, cell phone, X Box, you name it), I better go for another ride. Great for stress relief.

The Weather Channel says today's East oast earthquake was caused by an unknown fault line running under D.C. and through Virginia. It is now being called Obama's Fault, though Obama will say it's really Bush's Fault. Other theories are that it was the founding fathers rolling over in their graves or, that what we all believed to be an earthquake was actually the effects of a 14.6 trillion dollar check bouncing in Washington.

It felt like big truck passing by here. Now we have a hurricane headed for the coast. They rarely do a lot of damage up here in the mountains but downed trees on the power lines can be difficult get to. God bless our linemen around here. They are real pros.

My original composition - "the ballad of the Virgnia Quake" (to the tune of the edmund fitzgerald):
The legend lives on from the beltway on down of the big shake they called "the 5-9er" The quake it is said caused not one single dead when it shook DC and all those around her
With a rumble and roar heard at each starbucks store The latte's shook off of their tables. The floors slick as cream, what a harrowing scene The patrons all scrambled for safety
ohhhh ohhhh the land shook like japan around me ohhhh ohhhh we'd better take up oragami
Down on the floor of the check-cashing store We thought maybe it was just a drive-by As we shook to and fro only then did we know That this was a major trembler
The traffic from town stood stock still on the roads my cell phone no more than dead weight I tried to call home to let them all know Their taco bell would get there, but late
(okay - it's rough, and not done....but feel free to contribute verses).
...you're gonna feel a little pressure....

We drove through Charlotte just after Hugo in '89. I was surprised to see damage that far inland. Entire roofs sitting on the highway. 25'+ boats picked up from Lake Norman and dropped in the median on I-77. It wiped out all the trees near my father-in-law's lake place outside Statesville (picture a clear-cut forest), but didn't damage any nearby homes.
Firewood was real cheap for the next few years.

I was in our high rise office in Tysons Corner VA and it felt like the building was going to come down. The last wave (before it quit) was almost like an explosion. Almost knocked me off my feet. My wife was out mowing the yard (in Warrenton) and it did knock her off her feet. She said she could see the yard moving like waves in the ocean. Did some damage to the driveway (where the pavement was flush up against the house either side of the garage door) dropped about 6 inches. Broke some stuff in the house (vases that were on a shelf and a couple of pictures that fell off the walls).
