Almost had an argument in the grocery store the other day. I was wearing a Triumph t-shirt and an old guy stopped me and asked me where I got it. So I told him I bought it at the local Triumph dealer and then he proceeded to say that he knows it’s not the same company that’s making Triumphs these days since they used to be made by Norton. He knows because he had a Norton back in the 60’s. I told him as far as I know Triumph is being made by the same company that’s always made them and it’s never been Norton. He didn’t believe me so I told him to Google it….his wife finally dragged him off. I don't think I was wrong in what I said??

Same Triumph name, different factory location(s), different CEO. Norton was/is made by Norton.

Norton Villiers Triumph was the Government attempt to merge Norton with BSA-Triumph. 1973 to 1975. The forced merger failed. Norton was considered the big dog of that merger at the time. He may be two years right. BSA was the big dog in BSA Triumph for about 20 years leading up tot he forced merger.
In 1975 Triumph was the only thing left standing. Weak but standing at Meriden.
I think I have that right. Soren is the local expert on all of it.

Some boneheads love the argument , it feeds the beast within . Sometimes I just say somefin like "Do you like Moonpies" ? , "I sure do." And then I just walk away , they just stand there , disarmed , hungry and dumbfounded . So fun .

You said it EXACTLY right, Ron. That old "know-it-all" geezer that Julie ran into was wrong....especially about Norton owning Triumph in "the '60s".
The BSA Group "owned" Triumph during that time, with Norton being a part of a different company altogether, AMC(Associated Motorcycles), which included the AJS and Matchless brands until the mid-'60s, whereupon the Norton-Villiers company was formed, and which later, as you mentioned, there was a "forced" merger in the '70s after the BSA Group went belly-up(or else the British Gov't's refusal to infuse any additional funds into keeping either Norton or Triumph afloat) combining the Norton and Triumph brands, with neither actually "owning" the other.

What Dwight said. Plus... don't forget the "Sitdown Strike" in '73 when NVT was going to close the Triumph plant, so the workers locked out the owners, until they formed the Meriden Motorcycle Co-op and continued manufacturing Triumphs until '83.

What an emotional move by the workers to save a British legend . Worth saving of course ... should have been a song writen to commemorate what transpired.

when Norton Villiers Triumph (nvt) owner Dennis Poore wanted to shut down Triumph motorcycle manufacture at Meriden in the dark days of 1973 and shift production to the bsa factory in Small Heath, which nvt also owned by then, the Triumph workers locked management out for 18 months. It was one of the last spasms of the industry. Yet most British motorcycle industry workers were much more competent than outsiders understood. In Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, London, and Meriden, sons worked alongside their fathers, and management control over the shop floor often was delegated to experienced craft workers. It was said that many small labour disputes could be resolved in a break room over a packet of Woodbine cigarettes — that is, informally and collegially. A London Times reporter once asked Meriden workers how long they had been there. He said people would tell him "'I'm a newcomer, I’ve only been here eight, nine, ten years.’ Most told me twenty, thirty or even forty.”

Yeah! And I THINK I know JUST the person around here who would have the talent to carry that off!!!
(...but he seems to be taking a little sabbatical from this place at the moment)

I didn't know Stevie B is musical at all.

Looks like we need to send out a search party for either Keith amd/or Brent for this one. I'm sure they are up to the challenge. Maybe even a little colaberation?
I'm speeding because I have to get there before I forget where I was going.

Yeah Chad. Word is Steve is a master at playin' the Didgeridoo down there in Australia...but that's about the extent of HIS musical talents, I also understand!
(...and besides, it's rather hard to write a melody when your instrument of choice just makes that "Waaaaaa Waaaaa Waaaaaa" sound, ya know!)

I had a "small disagreement" last week, but a couple ROLAIDS and the world looked much better. Which reminds me of the old tv commercial "How do you spell relief?". My grandpa would slap his knee and chime in "f-a-r-t". Makes me laugh 30 years later jh

Aah! Now ya see THAT'S what I've always loved about this place! I can instantly go FROM readin' Wade paraphrasing the Hebrew Bible with poetic Selah references in the "How many......" thread, TO John here quoting his Grandfather about "farts" in THIS one! (...and with just a click of this keyboard!)

Funny thing about a fart joke you never get to old to laugh at one.
