Just purchased a new home and 20 acres and now I am looking for a side by side utility vehicle. So far I have looked at John Deere Gators and a Polaris Ranger and right now I am leaning towards the JD. They have a 3 cylinder gasser and a 3 cylinder Yanmar Diesel available. I want to use it for working around the property and plowing my driveway so not for sport or speeding around, for that I have a KTM 450XE dirt bike. Can anyone give me some input on PROS or CONS or any other makes to look at or consider? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would go with the 85hp Polairs Ranger RZR XP 900. The only thing it hauls is A$$.

if you're looking to plow and pull stumps and stuff why not just go with diesel power?

Have a look at the Kubota diesel units. For what you want to do they are a perfect fit. The one we use for odd jobs in the Gas Plant where I work is one sweet unit. Large air conditioned cab, tilt box etc. Check them out. Definitely leans more towards work and moderate play than sport.

What about reliability? I am leaning a little more towards the diesel than the gas but I have not driven any of them yet and I am trying to find out about any reliabilty issues for any of them as well. Thanks for the input so far!

I don't know any thing about what sort of utility vehicle you are looking for, but just wanted to congratulate you on your new home and property!

+1 You might be looking for TWO vehicles here!! Some times a machine designed to do two things can't do either to maximum efficiency. Maybe a golf cart (to patrol with) and a small tractor (to do the work)!!

They are not really heavy enough for much plowing or stump pulling. A tractor is better for that stuff. I would try to find an old 8N ford that's in good shape. Those bad boys will work plus they have a PTO for operating movers and stump grinders, you can even get a back hoe attachment for it.

Ditto, except look for a Ferguson, about the same price range and power, but better design.
Years ago, there was someone with a Fergy powered dragster. He usually took home a trophy for top in class and, once, due to a series of mechanical failures, he took the top eliminator trophy running against an A-Fuel rail that blew the rear axle coming off the line.

I actually got a John Deere Model M with the property as well and I know that it is a work horse, and it even has a plow but it is a rear mount plow that faces backwards and I just thought that I could do a better and faster job of plowing the driveway with a front plow. I don't know if my back can take being twisted around for that long of time. I am still being perceptive though.

I don't know your landscape around your property, ie if you have or want a path all around your property lines and if it's hilly, rocky or open pasture... you can get a jeep to run around with and have a plow for it for the winter months. What your tractor has now sounds like a grader blade that's turned around. What kind of "work" do you have planned?

FWIW, I was talking to the owner of the local multidealer here and he made the comment that he'd like to get the Polaris franchise if the current owners decide to sell, because it would insure his service department would stay busy.

Is that due to repairing them selling them or both? I have not heard many reviews on either the JD or Polaris to speak of. I found a couple doing a google search but not much more than that and not enough to make a judgement or decision from.

After paying $3,000 to have it surveyed, that was my plan to keep the propery lines visible and eay to find. I will need to clear a little more than half the perimeter to do so. The other portion is already cleared. My lower corner is a little on the hilly side but other than that there are just some gradual grades. I never really thought of a Jeep with a plow though.
