Some dirt bag tried to break into the garage at mom's house, my brother and I keep out bikes there.

Does anyone of a basic alarm system, with a simple on and off switch that activates when the door is open.

Or better yet since this is a forum of tinkers has anyone built one?

There was a post a few months back with someone wanting to do the same with his barn/workshop. Not sure how he got on. I did say then ,that you can get padlock alarms which are cheap and easy to fit . When moved or tampered with it goes of with alot of noise . Should put a few people of.Go to Amazon and put in "alarm padlocks " They have alot there over here so would think also over your side.Worth having a look and you can get one till you get a more permanent alarm. Good luck . atb geoff

Get a motion-senser light, a fake or real vid camera. You can get an alarm made for a car (12 volt) it will still be active if the power goes out and only costs a couple hundred only draw back, you'll need a battery tender for it(along with a battery).

Motion sensor with strobes and really loud alarm. Or a sensor that detects any jarring of the door, like those car alarms that go off if you bump the car.

I was thinking of a wired set up, transformer, siren, activation switch and a control switch.

Sure, you could use a micro switch, or a spring arm limit switch. web page

Lowes has a line of security system bits, magnetic switches, noise makers etc.
Some bike alarms have an external input intended for connecting up a motion sensor on another bike. Nothing says it couldn't just as well be connected to a door or outside motion sensor.
If you have a door to your back yard, put in a doggy door and get a really big 'doggy' to sleep in there.

Just get insurance and leave the thing open. If they want it thay will take it alarm or not. It will take the police an hour to get there, and they know it. Those alarm sighn just say "Hey thief I got stuff to take".
At least if you leave it open they may not tear up a bunch of other valuable stuff in the taking of what they came for.

I once wired up an alarm using a micro switch. It was done in such a way that when the door was opened, the alarm sounded. Inside the garage was an isolating switch (an ordinary light switch) which only the people who should know, knew where it was located.

It meant that the alarm sounded even when authorised people went in until they switched it off, and it sounded again when they switched it on again on the way out, until the door was closed, but that was the way the company whose garage it was wanted.
However, it should be easy enough to adapt to your needs

The good thing about it was that micro switches are a lot less temperamental than motion sensors

You all forgot the utility of a well placed Claymore.

I was thinking Claymore when Rich said landmine... after all, your garden variety toe popper or Bouncing Betty may not fully do the job!

I may take the police an hour, but me and my .45 can get out to my garage quicker if I heard the alarm going off.
