Was an 8.9, now revised to 8.4 earthquake…. Here's what that feels like… http://www.rte.ie/news/2011/0311/japan.htmlAnd just moments later, a tsunami went up the coast invading inland... http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/video/2011/mar/11/japan-earthquake-tsunami-videoThere was warning for us too (I live on the east coast of Taiwan) but it seems it didn't reach us. Hawaii and the US west coast are on alert…. To put it in perspective, Haiti was 7.0 …. Japan's building are however built and able to withstand much of a quake… but 8.4 is HUGE! Our thoughts to the people of Japan.

Terrible. I was thinking about you Perceval in Taiwan. Good to hear that you didn't get hit by the Tsunami. I pray that we don't see devastation around the Pacific from the Tsunami. It has that potential.

Richard, thanks for the thoughts and wishing that thing doesn't go near your backyard!

Damn boys sounds bad for lots of people.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

That tsunami vid is just nuts, the destructive power is just amazing. Looks like quite a bit of food was washed away, looked like farm land to me. Looked like there was a truck being driven that got caught up in the wave too. Not to take away from all the others who lost property and or life. Terrible.

Absolutely terrible! Warning to the Pacific Coast regards to a Tsunami. Will be watching the news all day today. I have family in the Seattle area and in the San Francisco area, but they're not in danger. Wonder how it'd affect the mouth of the Columbia River and how far inland. We live about 300 miles from the coast on the Columbia. Interesting...

Tragic! The devistation is comparable to when the bomb got dropped. Our thoughts and prayers go out out to the people of Japan and anyone else affected by the tsunamis.

It went through some countryside towns before hitting the farm lands....
It's too early to tell, but the loss of life from the quake and then the tsunami will be sadly high, I am afraid...
Right now, millions of japanese are in a state of emergency, no lights, no way to take the metro and get back home (it is night now) ...

Not to take away from the tragedy at all, but it will be interesting how the automotive and motorcycle industry will be affected over the next year.

Yeah, there sure is some horrific video feed comin' out of Japan right now! Besides the human carnage, there looks to be billions upon billions of dollars in damages.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

The USAR teams are getting too much work with these events this year. They are still working in Christchurch and now this one. Thoughts to all involved.

It was indeed an awful thing to watch on the tv throughout the day. Watching the news today was like watching something that could only be devised in a Hollywood scriptwriters office. I dunno but there seems to be a lot going on at the moment what with unrest in the Middle East and North Africa and these natural disasters occuring. If I was a religious person I'd say............
Before the war on terror, if I saw an unattended package I used to think "I'll be having that!"
