I'm curious why the second bike went down. Riding too close perhaps? Those half helmets don't look so helpful there, either.

Interesting that, having thrown its rider, the first bike straightened up and kept going.

Yep Bill, evidently the rider of Bike #1(and maybe of Bike #2) had never heard the very first rule of motorcycle riding:
Rule #1: If you have problems chewing gum and farting at the same time, then while riding your motorcycle NEVER attempt to take one hand off your handlebars in order to wave at others along the road. This most friendly practice of acknowledging others will almost assuredly be beyond your skill level.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Don't know what happened with #2 but the whole thing looked like a lot of #2. The second guy should have never gone down and looks to me like an experienced rider wouldn't have gone down on the first bike either. I did the same thing when I was riding my SM home but didn't even come close to dumping the bike. I was used to my chopper that I could grab a big hand full of front brake and barely have any stopping power and grabbed the SM front and locked it up by mistake. Wheel skidded sideways a little like in the vid but I let off and righted the bike again and kept going. So in conclusion I say inexperience caused this mishap.

Dwight, I do take a bit of exception to your comment. It's not always just a skill level. Since I no longer have my stock shoulder, I have problems trying to give the 2-finger wave. It has nothing to do with skill level, rather the fact that a particular shoulder muscle is no longer in the correct position. This makes moving my left arm up and down more of a challenge. It kept me from getting another bike until I could move my left arm up high enough to operate the clutch. While I have been able to give a few waves, I have made the conscious decision that controlling the bike is more important than to give a friendly wave.

Looks like Rider#1 would have been seriously hurt by the sissy bar of Bike#2 - it caught him right in the neck/face/chin area...did he even survive?

Don't know, but from the looks of shirt sleeves vs pavement, I bet they call him "Scabby" if he did

Somehow, this reminds me of a couple of blokes I saw once at the Whittier oil field hill climb. They were riding shiny new Zundaps. Lucky for them, those wouldn't climb a hill, so they were playing hare and hound. The one in front had the idea that turning on dirt was done by clamping your foot down hard and lifting the "bike" around. Of course, he went arse over teacups and his buddy ran over his rear wheel.

I like to wave when I can and it's safe to do so... I find it part of the quaintness that comes with living here in the mountains. And having a backrest and windshield makes it easy 'cause I don't have to hang on too tight. But there are times I won't wave, times when the bike and road needs both hands and all of my attention. It can be an unsafe practice, even for us seasoned riders.

You almost make it sound like you feel obligated to wave. Sure, it's a friendly gesture, but that's about it. I've never made instant best friends because I waved at a stranger, nor has anyone turned around and threatened to kick my ass because I didn't wave back. You are absolutely correct in that controlling the bike is more important than waving at someone. The poser in the video obviously thought differently and smeared his DNA all over the pavement because of it. If someone can't ride in a straight line on a sunny, perfect condition day, then they should find a new hobby. Inexperience had it's mitts all over this little escapade.

$20,000.00 dollars and a weekend class to get your endorsment don't make you a biker. Even If a bunch of guys who against their better judgement lets you ride with them in a group. The least experienced riders should be in the back of the group. I have never riden in a group, that we didn't have a safety meeting and explain this along with other things before taking off.

Dave, on my first TBA, I used to try and wave whenever I could. We have some great mountain riding roads and there are a lot of friendly-type bikers out here. I've tried it a few times with my "new" shoulder and sometimes I worry that I won't get my left arm back up (especially if riding for a few hours). It's not something that therapy will strengthen, it's just the simple fact that a muscle shifted, after surgery, and limits the range of my left shoulder. It's hard to explain and is annoying as all hell, but I feel bad when I encounter others who seem are being very friendly and I just keep my left hand locked on the handle (although I'll try and raise a few fingers). Makes me feel bad as I wonder if they think I'm some newbie hanging on for dear life. But I'd rather be safe. If I go down on my left side again, it won't be the chromium steel implant that breaks.

I completely understand where you're coming from, and don't worry, I don't think anyone takes offense to a wave unreturned. A couple fingers or a head nod is sometimes all I do too.

You forgot to include all the H-D tee shirts, drink mug, bumper sticker, shot glass, etc that makes one a real biker...

+1 Most of the time I keep the heel of my palm resting on the hand grip and raise a couple of fingers too, at a stop light or when I'm clutching, I nod.

Headnod in a downwood motion 45 degrees is appropriate. However for a Police car ahead warning, left hand up in the air doing twirlies like a siren.

That makes sense, Steve. However, in the States, or at least out here in Arizona, somehow it's become the standard to take your left hand and repeatedly tap the top of your helmet for this particular warning...or I suppose if you're more inclined toward the "Pirate Look", to repeatedly tap your do-rag!!!
I'm guessin' this practice is to say there's a "Smokey" up ahead..."Smokey" bein' an old term used over here for State Troopers wearin' those "Smokey the Bear" kinda hats!
(...'cause if you'd take your hand and do that "twirlie" thing around here, I'm guessin' most folks might think you're tryin' to say somethin' to 'em like, "Turn around!", OR maybe, "Well, whoopty-do! Big friggin' deal"!!!)

Jeez I feel for the guys or any rider that goes down as it's never a good thing. I hope rider # 1 is ok as it looked like the second bike ran over his melon. My question is what the heck were these azzclowns doing. My goodness it look like he slipped on a banana peel or something. After all this is a straight flat stretch of hwy in Florida and it looks like he just dropped it. Strange looking accident for sure.

so how did the accident happen?? well we were riding on a straight patch of highway, clear day no rain or other debris on the roadway. then i decided to see what happens when i lock up my front brake.
If it isn't broke, I haven't messed with it.

Hmmm, good point! He'd be in a lot of trouble if it was the good ol' days without signal lights.

How bad do you suck.... when you come off the bike, and the bike is still up and going down the road with out you. They (both of them) really need to never ever get on anything with 2 wheels again.... Makes the rest of us look like schmucks... i feel bad for them....But that is fn funny right there

Absolutely NOT. Find me ONE document from a legit source that states this.
All safety documents state middle or front but not the back.

Hey Folks ....just like to point out that, to many of us old folks in the uk, a two fingered wave will be taken as a gross insult( similar to your one finger wave) It all goes back to Agincourt, they tell me -though I wasnt there personally
Al ps another good way to insult us is to remind us how well we do in sporting events......

Does the side of the fingers matter? Backside or underside of fingers showing? I want to make sure I get it right.

A nod, a wave, a peace sign.. all easier than mooning someone from a bike.

We always put the dummies up front so we can keep an eye on them. Of course, the club pres and road captain had to be the first 2, so it sometimes got to be interesting for them.

What works for our little group (Sons of Thunder)in Merced, is to split up into two groups. Speed demons first, followed with the lets say leisure riders second, with agreed plan on where to meet up. The wave is optional. LOL

I guess we all have to learn at some point what happens when you grab a handful of brake at speed, I learned that lesson when I was about 7 years old, fortunately there were no cameras around. lol.
