I was called into a manager's meeting today and told by the local union president that I wasn't tough enough with my employees. My boss was stunned to say the least. The union Pres. said that I treat my employees like adults and they weren't able to handle that. WTF is that?
My youngest 'ee is 40+!
Please let me retire before I lose what's left of my mind!

Sometimes you just gotta shake your head. I once worked at a place where my supervisor told me to stop being so friggin' happy in the morning. Really, I'm not making this up!!

I'm still debating how I should act when I go back in (Saturday). Of course, now my boss will be watching... (even though our team already leads the District in productivity!)

Yup. Sounds just like upper-management to me. So then you get tougher on employees, employees become unhappy, productivity decreases due to loss of moral, and YOU get the blame for upsetting the flow.

BINGO! That's what I told my boss, but he has limited experience - except for his "I was the night manager at Blockbuster Video" experience. Lucky me.

So are you supposed to treat them with kid gloves and babysit them? Screw that.

My store is at the top of the heap in sales and yet home office cuts everyones hours but not in other parts of the country. I treat the people under me as equals as much as I can and laugh and joke with them. I am tough when I have to be.

"You can't fix stupid".- Ron White.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

I don't know about that. It seems most of the people I work with have their stupid not only fixed but tuned, turbo-charged and blasting along near the red-line 24x7.

I wish I was an employee Why am I not an employee I hear you ask? (or not) I was working for a good medium sized firm which made a tidy profit when we got bought out by a bigger firm. We kept making a profit even during the darkest days of the recession, then the new bosses decided new procedures were to be implemented and promptly demoralized and alienated not only the whole workforce (3800 of us nationwide) but the clients aswell. They went bust in November owing hundreds of million pounds stirling. And nearly took down some of the country's major supply merchants too So Steve, my advice is to say "arseholes to the lot 'em" and try to carry on as normal. I doubt they'll listen though

Ya know I was in business for myself for most of my adult life and it is kind of nice to punch a clock and go home at the end of my shift weather there is more work to do or not and forget about the place for the evening.

I've got 12 months 'till retirement eligibility and 18 months of accrued leave on the books. Tempting.

I once had a teacher at a college where I used to work part time as a campus police officer, complain to the Director that I was always smiling and he should have me take a urine test to see if I was on drugs. Gotta love people.

He's not a bad guy, but he's got a weakness for trying to please females. Whenever one complains (and I've got about a dozen in my crew ) he loses all sense of reason. I'm no misogynist, but that many women in one area spells trouble! If I could just get them in all sync and then take about 5 days off every month...

We just had two layoffs yesterday. I'm pretty sure they were dead weight and targets of opportunity (contract cuts with the client) but still, people are nervous again...

I thought your profession was mostly recession proof? Dead weight not being a good term
